Inter Milan manager Rafael Benitez is so keen to sign Javier Mascherano from his former club Liverpool that he is ready to offer defensive midfielder Esteban Cambiasso in a player-plus-cash deal.
Full story: Sunday Mirror

Benitez also wants to take three other Liverpool players to Italy and is interested in England full-back Glen Johnson, Danish centre-back Daniel Agger and Brazilian midfielder Lucas.

Nigel de Jong looks set to leave Manchester City once they have completed the £24m signing of Barcelona's Yaya Toure. The 25-year-old, who is currently anchoring the Dutch midfield at the World Cup, arrived at Eastlands 17 months ago in a £16m deal from Hamburg.

If Rafa is so desperate to sign Masher let him pay through the nose for him. If we can get Cambiasso + wads of cash )enough to buy De Jong and have a bit left over) we'd have done well.

Don't go and spoil it all Ross. He wants Lucas! Again! Honest!

id be upset if we sold Agger - he has come out and stated that he would like to stay as he feels very comfortable in the city.

If Benitez was to offer more than 18 million for Johnson we would be stupid not to accept. im still stunned we paid that much for him.

I'd rather keep him, seeing as we're going to lose at least one of out top players anyway.

He's young, British, already superb going forward and with plenty of time to further develop his defensive skills. He'll be unstoppable in 2/3 years time.

Agree absolutely. We sell Mascher + Lucas for £40m, and buy Cambiasso + De Jong for £20m; we've got a better CM partnership, plus £20m spending money. Please let this happen...

If Toure moves for £25m, what does that do for the value of Mascherano ?

Barcelona and Madrid must fucking love Man City.

You wouldn't want to partner De Jong and Cambiasso together. It'd be too limited.
Maybe, although Cambiasso is a good passer of the ball. It would still be a better CM partnership than Mascher & Lucas though.

Out of the two, I'd rather have De Jong as he's younger and more mobile, plus he's played in the PL already. I like Cambiasso a lot as a player though.

Good news.

Hopefully we can now get started with our preparations for next season.
Agreed. The sooner we can get someone in (hopefully not Hodgson) the better. It's going to be a tight deadline to meet and assess the players, make changes, introduce new training methods, work on tactics etc etc.

I suspect there'll be no sales until the new Manager has been consulted. The papers need some stuff to maintain interest so they're going with speculation; nothing more.

Mascherano will go. I just hope he doesn't have a minimum release fee clause because obviously benitez will know all about it!

I think Agger and Johnson will stay. Hope Lucas doesn't stay. If Benitez thinks pairing up Mascherano and Lucas again is a good idea then he is more stupid than i thought.

I hope Rafa is stupid enough to buy Mascherano and give us Cambiasso and some money.
Why? Mascherano is worth much more than Cambiasso. He's better and much younger.

Take Stephen Ireland off their hands instead of De Jong.

Good player, fucking nutjob though. Can you imagine how long he'd last in a dressing room with Carra & co ripping into him?!

Yea, that is why he left the Ireland team apparently.
All the other lads on the team were slagging him about his (at the time) new found hair. Of course that wouldn't be a problem now but it just shows that the poor lamb is indeed a sensitive soul.

Its a given that Mascherano will be leaving. However, Agger is going nowhere. As for people advocating that we sell Magic, that is just plain fantasy. Magic has much to offer and with the lack of RW at the club, he could be developed into a sensational player. Defensively he will improve.

If we are looking to offload players, the likes of Lucas, El Zhar, Kuyt and Riera first. Rafa can have Mascherano but for no less than 30 million! He is the best defensive midfielder in the world and they must pay a premium that reflects his value.
