Liverpool Plan £3 Million Swoop For Carew

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is set to launch a surprise move for Aston Villa centre-forward John Carew, according to a report from the Daily Star Sunday.

Ready cash is in short supply at Anfield, but the powerful Norwegian could be prised away from Villa park for £3 million. His current contract expires in 18 months' time, and there has not yet been any indication that manager Martin O'Neill is to offer him a new one.

Carew played for Benitez at Valencia, and the Spaniard is said to still be an admirer of the 30-year-old, who is apparently unhappy about slipping behind England striker Emile Heskey in the Villa Park pecking order.

Dubious source (Goal.com) I know but I would prefer JC to Emile.

im sure O'Neill would rather lose 3 million by allowing Carew to move on Bosman than help our chances of tipping them for fourth.

Heh, if there is one thing Carew isn't, it's shite.

He'll score some goals wherever he is, and would give us that target man option.

I highely doubt O'Neill would sell him, so it's a moot point.

we hoof the ball enough as it is..

Carew from AV? MON will never sanction it.

Good CF though, Carew for last 20 minutes options/possibilities.

Carew put in one of the most complete forward performances I've ever seen against Real Madrid (maybe a slight exaggeration but he was phenomenal that day).

I'd take Carew in a heartbeat but this rumour is an absolute load of bollocks.

I remember the one for Lyon. He powered past Cannavaro to finish home a great goal.

Meh. Suppose we could do worse.

Could be worse, could be Beattie or Davies.

*Vomits*

I wouldnt rule it out, it's obvious we want a striker and we'd be daft not to have a couple of options, seemingly it's RVN, Heskey and Carew.

Although I don't think he is shit I don't think he's great either. And he might score some goals but he's not exactly prolific is he?

I don't know Keni, it doesn't mean we haven't shown interest and there's other factors to consider, like his contract, the player and whether he himself is interested, if Villa need to raise funds. It's clear MON doesn't need Heskey AND Carew, I don't know why he bought Heskey, unless he saw issues over Carew, because they're essentially the same sort of player.

It'd be a good Jan qsigning, but I can't see it happening.

He's alright but yeah villa are not a selling club these days so it would be illogical to sell him to a rival for 4th place.

Don't think it was an exaggeration Keni - agree with the assesment entirely. Was the most complete performance from a forward that I can ever remember; he was utterly unplayable that night for Lyon. He shows flashes of it now and again these days and you can see the talent but I haven't seen him come close to putting it all together as he did that night.

I agree also that MON is not the type of manager who would think of selling to a rival. His attitude is always that the other team is a rival and he made us squirm the last time we tried to buy from him; I don't relish going back for another round.

Heskey is far quicker (not that one would notice, much of the time).

It just lokks that way, as Carew is surprisingly fast. He may have lost a yar d or two, but he's still pacey.

Carew is good although I doubt this will happen.

And anyway, I thought the main problem with Crouch was he made our play one-dimensional, predictable hoofball? This sounds like we're chasing the same.

Not that our footy isn't one-dimensional, predictable hoofball anyway but you see what I mean.

So would most managers when you can get 12 mill £ for someone who has 1 year left of their contract.
