According to a report in L'Equipe, Ligue 1 outfit Rennes are set to part company with France international Rod Fanni. The full-back is continually being linked with a move to Liverpool and Rennes are now supposedly ready to cash in on him.
"A decision about the future of Rod Fanni will be made in the next 48 hours," Rennes' general director Pierre Dreossi was quoted as saying.
Fanni has also attracted the interest of Olympique de Marseille, but the right-back has apparently set his sights on a move to the Premier League.
Additionally, Rennes are reluctant to sell Fanni to a domestic rival, meaning that the full-back is probably on his way to the Reds.
Rod Fanni to Liverpool
The Rennes full-back has long been linked with a move to the Premier League - with his name often the source of much amusement among our headline writers in the Towers.
Fanni, a powerful (and all-too-rare-these-days) defensive-minded right-back would bring both strength and discipline to a Reds rearguard, which has too often been caught out this season.
The potential capture of Fanni - the regular back-up to Bacary Sagna in the France national team - would free up Glen Johnson to play on the right of midfield, with Roy Hodgson hoping he can do for Liverpool what Gareth Bale has done so impressively for Spurs.
Meanwhile, contrary to reports Liverpool insist no bid has been made for Rennes right-back Rod Fanni. The defender has been watched by Anfield scouts this season.
Roy Hodgson, the club’s manager, and Damien Comolli, the newly-appointed director of football strategy, believe the 29 year-old’s versatility — he is comfortable at right-back and centre-back — makes him ideal to strengthen Liverpool’s injury-ravaged defence.
Though Rennes would like around £4 million for one of their prize assets, the Premier League club will pay no more than £2.5 million, in accordance with the belief of Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool’s owners, that premium prices should only be agreed for players with substantial sell-on value.
Hodgson and Comolli may face competition from Marseille for the defender’s signature, but it is believed Fanni, despite supporting the French champions as a child, is prepared to resist the lure of Champions League football to secure a move to England.
His arrival, though, would suggest Liverpool, controlled by a regime wary of overpaying squad players, are ready to consider selling both Johnson and Agger.
The former Chelsea full-back has failed to settle on Merseyside since his £17 million move from Portsmouth last year, with Hodgson admitting earlier this season that he had not produced anything like the sort of performances under his tenure that he would expect from an England international.
Though Liverpool would struggle to recoup Johnson’s inflated price, the Anfield side would expect to receive around £12 million for the player, who is being tracked by both Tottenham and Bayern Munich. Juventus are also thought to be monitoring Johnson, though Gregory van der Wiel, the Ajax and Holland right-back, remains the Italian side’s priority.
Agger, too, has not had the easiest of times adapting to Hodgson’s regime, seemingly intimating that the 63-year-old preferred central defenders not to pass the ball out from the back and admitting this week that, should the Liverpool manager wish to sell him, he would hope he was “man enough†to inform him in person.
The Danish international has struggled with injury for much of his Anfield career — though he does hope to return from a calf problem for the Boxing Day fixture with Blackpool — but a number of German clubs, including Bayer Leverkusen, harbour an interest in his services.
Meanwhile, Hodgson may be able to call on captain Steven Gerrard for Saturday’s trip to Newcastle, though the 30-year-old is likely only to be fit for a place on the bench.
“Today, we cannot be optimistic,†Dassier explained to RMC, echoing the comments of Rennes general manager Pierre Dreossi, who had indicated over the weekend that the deal was “strangely complicatedâ€.
“The financial requirements named by Rod Fanni’s agent are unreasonable,†the OM official continued. “There’s a pessimistic prognosis.
“I do not see the point of making a meeting unless the player takes his affairs and deals with us in a reasonable manner. For the moment, we are in the unreasonable.â€
Marseille have confirmed that an agreement has been reached with Rennes for the transfer of France international right-back Rod Fanni, who had also been a target for English outfit Liverpool.
The defending champions revealed the news on their official website on Wednesday afternoon. However, the 29 year-old must pass a medical - due to take place on Wednesday evening - before he can put pen to a paper on a two-and-a-half year deal.
Fanni, who had also been attracting interest from English Premier League giants Liverpool, was born in Martigues, just along the coast from Marseille, and made his name with another south coast side in Nice before moving to Brittany in 2007.
He arrives as much-needed cover in a position where Marseille have been short since losing César Azpilicueta to a serious knee injury last month. Despite being signed prior to the opening of the January transfer window, the fact that Fanni - who has made 114 league appearances for Rennes - is being signed to replace an injured player means he would be eligible to come straight into the side for Sunday's game against Lyon.
