Chelsea will destruct, L'pool not good enough - Keane

Roy Keane has taken a swipe at Manchester United's rivals for the Premier League title, claiming Chelsea will "self-destruct" and that Liverpool are "nowhere near" good enough to win a championship.

The former United skipper reckons the Red Devils will stroll to a defence of the title they claimed last year, having bought shrewdly over the summer, adding David de Gea, Ashley Young and Phil Jones.

"Even Sir Alex Ferguson said the other day the league's getting tougher. But I don't think so," Keane said in The Lying Rag. "If United are really at it, which they will be, they'll win it comfortably. Even last year when United were slipping up, no team was strong enough to take advantage of it.

"United have bought well. People talk about losing experience and I appreciate that Van der Sar, Neville and Scholes have all retired. But they have good young players coming through - and Wayne Rooney can play better than he did last season.

"When you look at the players they have left behind, they have Vidic, Rio, Darren Fletcher - these are all international players. And Giggsy is still there, too. United don't let players go unless they know they have players coming through to replace them.

"Ashley Young and Phil Jones are good players, Chris Smalling is coming through and Danny Welbeck is a good player coming back after being on loan at Sunderland last season.

"And when the older lads come to the end in four or five years, you'll have the likes of Jones and Smalling to step in with five or six years experience behind them. It's like a machine. You can talk all you like about other teams getting stronger but, for me, United have got stronger as well.

"They're going to do the business. Of all the teams, if one has the balance right I believe it's United."

Keane is reluctant to criticise new Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas, preferring instead to focus on the deep-rooted issues that plagued the Blues last season, prompting Carlo Ancelotti's dismissal at the end of the season.

"Everybody is on about this new young manager [Villas-Boas] - but I don't think the manager will be the problem," Keane said. "It's always the players down there, they all seem to self-destruct. They're big pals one minute and the next you hear they're all bickering with each other and players aren't happy if someone else scores."

As for Liverpool, Keane suggests their transfer business has focused on the wrong areas. Kenny Dalglish has spent heavily in midfield areas, bringing in Stewart Downing, Charlie Adam and Jordan Henderson - but the defence still looks short on depth, and they have shipped in goals during pre-season friendlies, losing 3-0 at Galatasaray and Hull and drawing 3-3 with Valerenga.

"Liverpool have bought good attacking players but I think it's actually defenders that they need," Keane said. "I think we've seen that a little bit in pre-season. Don't get carried away, Liverpool are in no position to win the league, nowhere near.

"Kenny Dalglish is the right man for the job. They've spent big money and bought good players - Luis Suarez is strong, Charlie Adam is a good player, but that was at Blackpool, and it's a big challenge for him.

"I gave Jordan Henderson his debut at Sunderland and he's a really good player. But to improve your team and to win the Premiership are two different things."

I can't help but think that he's right on some aspects.

He was such a great manager. I hope Kenny listens to him and has the lads heads solely focused on 2nd place because the great Roy Kean has spoken.

Good point.

Roy Keane on transfers. Probably the worst manager in the world when it comes to signing players.

I don't see he has said a lot wrong there really, and he hasn't been unpleasant about us at all I don't think.

when people are talking about title contenders, should we be mentioned, really? we're going to have a hard enough time just getting into the top 4.

We're not even in the Europa Cup. We may well challenge and surprise a few people, but there's enough reason and logic available to be justified in dismissing our title bid.

But enough of all that.

Fuck off Roy Keane. You cunt.

To be honest I don't think we're that far off if we get Enrique and Cahill.
I'm looking at the following.
1. We'll have big enough squad. So we're covered if someone gets injured.
2. No Europe.
3. Suarez, Gerrard, Cahill, Reina, Johnson, Agger, Enrique, Downing, Aquilani, Kuyt, Carroll and Meireles. Top class players.
4. Kenny's domestic record last season with a decimated squad.
5. Exciting youth players ready to break in to the first team (Sterling and Suso)

Yeah agreed, I guess, but the window isn't shut yet.

TBF he usually calls a spade a spade, he hasn't been reluctant to criticise United in the past when he's felt it was necessary and they were below par.

my honest opinion is the players we have bought and good luck with injuries make us an outside bet for the top 4. cahill and enrique with good luck with injuries makes us a realitic bet for top 4, only by adding another world class attacker to that would make us title contenders. this season is about making top 4 the season after that is about cheery picking an individual that will take us to the next level - title challengers.

If all we have is an outside chance after the money we've spent then you'd have to question what the fuck we were spending it on

because manu, chelsea and city have spend more (in past transfer windows) and arsenal and spurs will be strong as well. we've spent to close the gap on teams that had left us behind in the past too seasons.

Afraid so.

He said we've improved but not enough which is pretty spot on in terms of winning the league

Up to a point perhaps, but it also underlines the gap we've had to bridge, besides which the teams we have to overhaul have also been spending.

I never thought Id say this but I agree with Roy Keane, its pretty much spot on and we all know it, not matter how much we collectively or individually hate him. We have improved but we will not be contenders for the title. 4th is the target, if we finish higher than that it would be a huge bonus, if we finish lower than 4th then Kenny will be under very serious pressure to justify his spending

I read this last night and thought it was about right.
Our target this season is fourth spot, that is realistic and would be a great result considering where we have been.
Once we get that we can kick on to the next level.

regards
