Rafael Benitez is ready to sign Valencia left winger Juan Mata - which could spell the end of Ryan Babel's career at Anfield. Mata, 21, has been devastating in La Liga this season and Valencia are starved of cash so look ready to accept £16.5m next summer.

Mata has been excellent for Valencia this season, and would be the additon our left side needs. Scored 13 goals last season, and has really built on that this season.
If there's any chance we could get this lad, we should sign at once. 21 years old aswell, with obvs a great future.

It'll take a lot more than £16.5 to get this kid.
Seen him play for Spain a few times, looks ok.
Reira keeps him out of the team though, doesn't he?

Valencia are struggling financially and desperately need to raise funds. The club's two most prized assets - David Villa and David Silva - have so far remained at the Mestalla, despite keen interest from the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

However, on Tuesday, Valencia director Fernando Gomez admitted the club may have to sell both, adding: "The club made a great effort to keep our players this summer but our economic situation remains very serious.

Now it looks like Mata will be joining them through the exit door, with Rafa Benitez reportedly willing to pay up to £16.5m for the 21-year-old Spain international.

Mata's current contract is until 2012, but he is only on £10,000 a week and has turned down a new, improved deal.

Mata's agent, Juan Mata Snr, who is also the player's father, told the ***: "We want Valencia to recognise the kid's true quality, and it's not only a matter of money."

Mata Jnr said: "This matter is all down to the club and my agent. Benitez is a big coach but I just want to concentrate on my game without any distractions."

On Revista they said that Valencia are going to offer him a new contract.

I can't imagine that a) we'll have 16.5M to spend in Jan and b) Valencia would let him go.. in Jan.. for that amount.

The article says next summer, but I agree with you. It doesn't look likely. Still, this is the kind of players we should be linked with and I think there*s a bigger chance of signing him than Silva/Villa.

He'd fit perfectly in to our left side.

I haven't seen Valencia play this season. What kind of player is Mata? Is he strong? Fast? Does he score goals? And if he's playing LW, where is Silva playing?

Babel will obviously be gone soon, but it wouldn't exactly be a surprise if we offloaded Riera as well. Albert could maybe function as part of an exchange deal here...

Nope...Riera doesnt play when everyones fit.....and its no shame in not getting into that Spanish midfield that has Xavi, Iniesta, Alonso, Senna, Silva and has Fabregas, Santi Cazorla, Riera and Busquets knocking on the door. He's in the squad tho and he's a quality player! Miles better than Babel!!

He doesn't have the skill of Silva, but he's a better finisher and has a physique more suited to the English league. He's not flashy, just very efficient with everything he does and technically superb. I'm not sure who to compare him to, really; Arshavin's not too far off, although the Spaniard isn't playing to that level just yet.

He's very technically gifted, pacey, great vision and has an excellent cross. 23 goals in 68 games for Valencia is a fantastic record for a winger.

Silva is playing behind Villa at the moment, and has been great this season aswell.

personally I think we'd be better off getting a class left back than a left midfielder purely because of price it would also solve the problem of gerrard and yossi wanting to occupy the second striker slot. yossi could play at left midfielder and when he tucks inside the quality left back will provide the width. we should bid for that lyon left back, he's quality.

Thanks for that Slugs.
Lets hope we can land him so, unlikely as it is.

He's excellent. Shame they bought Cissokho this summer for 13 mill £. They won't be selling him anytime soon, and if they do he'll cost 20 mill +.

I'd prefer Silva, i wasn't that impressed with Mata when i watched him, admittedly i haven't seen him that much.

We'll need a new LB AND a new LW next summer, as Dossena, Babel and probably Riera will all be sold. I don't want to squeeze Yossi out of the first team, as I think he's been ace lately, but at the same time all top squads need competition for places and good back-up, and ours is really poor at the moment.

If we can't get Cissokho, and we probably can't, we should look at Bordeaux's LB, Benoit Tremoulinas - a quick, skilful 23-yr-old in the same mould as Evra and Clichy.

More importantly, is he any good in Football Manager ?

Valencia being in financial trouble and having a fire-sale of their players is becoming as tiresome a cliche as the decline of the Manchester United. Have they ever sold a player for peanuts in the last 5 years. And they seem to have no issues raising money for transfers also.

They sold Albiol for 13 mill £, which isn't a lot for one of the best Spanish centre backs. And it was to high spending Real Madrid aswell.

Yup.

I can imagine Riera being part of a swap deal. Riera and 10m would probably be good business for Valencia.

Hope not, otherwise Everton are sure to have him tied up already and just not announced it yet.
