Another mediocre player out through the revolving door.

I wonder what mediocre player we'll sign as his replacement...

It sickens me how much money Benitez has wasted. The amount of money he has blown on average duds as squad filler and then moved them on is ridiculous. Why not just pool a fair bit of money together and sign top quality instead of signing squad players who won't be here in 18 months time?
To be fair, that's exactly what he did last summer.
He just doesn't pick them.

Well done Rafa.

Another decent player who was full of confidence pre season sold off for less that he's worth.

Just f8cking leave already!

I don't think it's very clever to give players the impression that all they have to do is bad mouth the coach and they'll be allowed to move on chop-chop post hastey style.

On a similarly throbbing vein, I'm not sure it's wise to punish players when there's some cash being passed to us in the ceremonial samovar of trans-continental transfer window asynchrony.

Stepping now into the land of certainty, I'm sure it's going to be fun thinking of Riera playing in Russia and missing the World Cup anyway, his blue frozen hands flapping around as he tries to keep the snow out of his paella while he watches some small chinned nippy winger from Andalucia win gold in Africa.

I also feel sure that our squad is weakened at the very moment when it needs to be as strong as possible because when he was playing at anything like his best we looked a better team. It's a pity we couldn't find some way to get him to play like that in the last 10 or so games of the season. I'm used to blows like this though. I don't expect any better.

Oh well, that was inevitbale after his outburst.

A better player than the comments in this thread are giving him credit for, but not a great player. He's worth more than 6M too, but given we were in the position of wanting/looking to sell after his comments, we were never gonna get much for him.
x2.

Someone's comment about Riera hindering Babel's progress made me laugh. Try lack of talent as well.

It will cost us significantly more than 6mil to get someone better on the left.

In fairness, the same was true before we bought him. Which is precisely why we bought him.

Yep the last two summer transfer windows have been disasters. We should have been adding the final pieces now, instead of sifting throuh more junk players and trying to sell them on again.

Unsettled Liverpool winger Albert Riera has admitted a transfer to the Russian Premier League is an attractive option.

Riera has been frozen out at Anfield after last week's astonishing attack on manager Rafa Benitez in the Spanish media, in which he referred to Liverpool as 'a sinking ship'.

And the Spain international may take advantage of Russia's extended transfer window, which runs until 8th April, to depart to Spartak Moscow on loan.

"Russia presents a very interesting option for me," Riera is quoted as saying in Russian newspaper Sport Express.

"For one, it's the only prestigious league in Europe where the transfer window is open.

"And secondly, if I play there regularly, I may be able to earn my ticket to the World Cup in South Africa."

Riera appears hopeful a deal can be concluded in the near future.

"I hope that the question of my transfer will be resolved by this week," he stated.

According to BBC gossip we have turned down thr Russians request to take Riera ON LOAN
Why on earth would they buy him when the rest of Europe can't? A loan to permanent deal would be a much less risky deal. They can pay him less, see if he fits in and then complete the deal at a pre-arranged price. We haven't a chance in hell of getting any money for him anytime soon and will probably ending up loaning him (and paying for the privilege) for the rest of the season.

Riera's come across as a complete and utter cunt in all this. It's clear he's putting the short-term gain of a world-cup squad place (he'll never get to play) over the good of his club and own long-term career.

The modern footballer eh?

Yep true. We could have signed Adam Johnson as Bunny also states for cheaper than Riera. Or if he wanted, he could have not signed about 5 players for £6 million or thereabouts, and signed one or two top quality players.

From soccernet:

CSKA deny interest in Albert Riera
By Soccernet staff

CSKA Moscow have denied holding an interest in Albert Riera, but the Liverpool winger is still expected to move to the Russian Premier League.

Albert Riera's future is in real doubt

Riera was suspended by Liverpool following his outspoken criticism of Rafael Benitez on a Spanish radio station and the midfielder also revealed in the same interview that a move to Russia was a possibility.

It has since been reported that CSKA Moscow were close to completing a £6 million transfer for Riera, who is hoping that a move away from Anfield will increase his chances of featuring at the World Cup finals for Spain.

But CSKA, who can sign players as the Russian transfer window is currently open, have denied any interest in Riera.

"We know that the CSKA brand is very attractive for any player who is searching for a new challenge but Albert Riera is not in our plans," said a club spokesman. "It has come as a surprise to us that we are interested in this player."

Riera's wife is from Russia and it is reported that Spartak Moscow are now hoping to arrange a loan deal for the 27-year-old.

One player unlikely to leave Anfield is Javier Mascherano, though, as the Argentinean midfielder, who has been linked with Barcelona in recent seasons, is ready to sign a contract extension at Anfield.

"The club are talking with my agents," Mascherano said. "I don't like to be involved in the contract meetings so I leave that to my agents and the people at the club. Liverpool know I want to stay. I don't think it will be difficult to arrive at a deal and we will see what happens in the next few weeks.

"I have never said I was not happy at Liverpool. That was the press. "I am happy here and the only way I can show that is with my performances on the pitch. I always try to do everything I can to help my team-mates and manager. Sometimes I can do well and sometimes I can't, but I always look to give 100% in training and in games."

Ha, them pesky Ruskies are smarter than we thought, not in that Riera is not a snip at £6m, but being over a barrel and all, out on loan for the rest of this and next and then take him for buttons.
Anyways, fuck that great news about Mascher. I was convinced he would be on his way and probably in January, what happened to all this guff about his Mrs?
Was it all a smoke screen to get us to give him the wages he deserves (by comparison to everyone else that is)

regards

I'm made up about Masher too. He's fast become my favourite player, his enthusiasm and will to win is infectious, you can't help but love the guy. Give him the armband!!

We're not really over a barrel with regards to Riera though are we Vlad? If they don't want to pay up a decent transfer fee for him now, then we can just hold onto him until the end of the season (then ship him out).

Agree with you about Mascher, it is great news (i just hope he signs up soon).
Bollocks to that.

I really don't see how wanting a potentially damaging influence removed from the club should call someone's conduct as a fan into question. Regardless of whether you agree with his comments, Riera has acted appallingly. And disrespected his manager, fellow players, and club in the process.

As such, he foregoes the respect usually afforded to Liverpool players.
