Leeds on Tuesday

Weren't you team 'this competition isnt an inconvenience' last week?

I wasn't suggesting it was his team anyway - i know we will overhaul given last game, but this is just what i would like to see, as was every other one out there
Not that I'm aware of ... but I don't find it an inconvenience anyway. I think it's a great opportunity to give squad members much needed game time so they are match-fit when we need them (and we will) and to blood a few youngsters so they are not over-awed if we have to rely on them. This isn't the FAC and much as though I'd love to win it there are much higher priorities that will actually, materially, affect the club - winning the LC is neither here nor there in the big picture.

Houllier, for one, would argue otherwise. The phrase beggars can't be choosers seems to lost these days on some deluded beggars. This is 2016, not the LFCTV Living in the Past channel, and this team has acquired a reputation for choking when it gets near to a trophy, big picture or small picture..

Anyway, Woodburn is one young player who has the temperament to seize the opportunity like Owen did against Wimbledon. That would be a wonderful counterbalance to the loss of Coutinho. But young players flourish in these circumstances by being surrounded with regular experienced players. Flood a team with them and it's just another under 23 game, albeit against 'grown up' opposition. What's required is careful selection of two or three young prospects who'll play alongside the seniors and be talked and helped through the game, with another couple to come on if things go well. Oh yes, and it's Liverpool and it's a club that exists to win things, whenever there's the opportunity.

Exactly. This isn't Houllier's time. Exactly it's 2016 and look how many realistic challenges we've had at the title over the past 27 years .... and even our expectations before this season began.

THIS team has reputation for choking ? THIS team ? History is no predictor of the future.

.............. Oh yes, and it's Liverpool and it's a club that exists to win things, whenever there's the opportunity.
Reeling off this platitude time and again doesn't change the reality Macca. Due to injuries we need to prioritise and if you want to use that that phrase then realise that to most there is nothing more important for LFC than to win the PL. Nothing.

Exactly so. We should go all out to win the trophy and use it as a springboard to even greater things. Our recent history is littered with accomplishments that we have failed to build on.

[Look at how many realistic challenges we've had at any title or cup. Very few. And we blew two out of two last season. Winning breeds winning. This club, contrary to the increasingly embarrassing arrogance of some of its fans, is not in a position to turn up its nose at ANY chance of winning something. That's something you earn after winning a league, not before it. The experience of winning, rather than losing, or throwing away, a final would be a significant help to this bunch of players. Don't underestimate it.]

THIS team has reputation for choking ? THIS team ? History is no predictor of the future. [Er, yes it is, sort of, as well as a means to avoid re-making past mistakes. That became partly the point of history with the Enlightenment. Keep up.]

Reeling off this platitude time and again doesn't change the reality Macca. Due to injuries we need to prioritise and if you want to use that that phrase then realise that to most there is nothing more important for LFC than to win the PL. Nothing.

[Injuries make changes necessary. Replacing injured players with fit ones. That's quite different to making changes for changes sake. Do you really not understand the difference? Wenger used to field under 23 or even under 21 teams virtually intact for cup games, and everyone said how much experience it was giving them. Well, how many went on to do anything? It was a major failure, because they didn't learn from playing with each other, they would have learned from playing with experienced seniors. If you want to misread arguments as platitudes, go ahead, but it's blatant misrepresentation that others will see through easily enough.]

The team will probably have 7-8 senior players in it, so it wont be flooded with youngsters.

So here's the Leeds squad, let's a play a game of "who do you know" (not personally, not aquitance or friend of a friend)?

Swede's Antonsson and Janson are both average players. Can't say I've seen them play regularly but they weren't exactly tearing it up in the Swedish league. Janson is a league winner though, with Malmö. None of them are starting players in the national team.

Veteran keeper Rob Green, probably their most "known" player.
Turnbull used to play for Chelsea I think.

@gkmacca

Historical errors made by previous teams/managers have no relevance to this team. 'Winning breeds winning' is another platitude that ignores they win because they have the best team/squad and not just because they won another competition, that isn't of course ignoring the value of experience.

This is an argument that comes around every time we play in the LC. The fact that Klopp, and every single other manager of a top team sees it differently, to the picture you're painting, and plays squad players and youngsters should tell us all we need to know about the value of the LC. If we make the semis then fine then go for it but not in these early rounds.

What is it you don't get about injuries ? You would roll the dice and play our best players against a team, as you yourself intimated, that aren't as skilled or cultured and are physically tough opponents. The dice could favour us and we come out of it unscathed, on the other hand the dice could fall badly and we end up with a couple more first teamers out for months after playing in a match which had no bearing on our title challenge, whereas those injuries could seriously impact, even derail, a title challenge or even a Top 4 slot. Which has the greater impact on the club ? Winning the LC, winning the PL or even failing to take a CL slot at all ?

Simple question : would you prefer a title challenge or to have a real run at the LC ? To think we can put out our best team, for every match we play, and get away without injuries is unfathomably naive and that's not you so I really can't understand your determined stance on this issue.

Spurs - LFC 1-1 (3-4 pens)

Tottenham: Robinson, Pamarot, Gardner, King, Atouba, Ricketts (Defoe 66), Brown, Carrick, Ziegler, Kanoute, Keane (Pedro Mendes 85).
Subs Not Used: Fulop, Naybet, Redknapp.

Liverpool: Dudek, Raven, Henchoz, Whitbread, Warnock, Nunez (Smyth 70), Diao (Partridge 111), Biscan, Potter, Mellor (Welsh 52), Sinama Pongolle.
Subs Not Used: Kirkland, Foy.

Trial by fire. We made the final that year I think and lost.

I think people are getting possibly confused between guessing what team Klopp is going to pick, vs what they would pick, and everything on the spectrum between.

There's a genuine discussion to be had around how "seriously" we take this competition vs other considerations like using it to give youth or "second string"a chance, and how compatible those two goals are.

Clearly, Klopp will argue he wants to do both, but obviously he will also play experienced players who wouldn't or don't usually feature in his first XI (the likes of Mignolet, Lucas, Klavan, Stewart, Moreno, Origi) and a couple of youth/ young players who are in and around the first team squad (Grujic, Elaria, Arnold etc)

I wouldn't be surprised if Woodburn starts. I'm going for my first game of the year! Well excited

Ming
Hey Arnold, Matip, Klavan, Moreno
Stewart Grujic Can
Wijnaldum
Woodburn Origi

is Ejaria not fit ? I've only scene him twice But he's looked like a class act on both occasions.

it'd be nice to simply win something this season so id be all for a strong side to guarantee making it through

Jordan Henderson, Sadio Mane, Georginio Wijnaldum, Divock Origi and Nathaniel Clyne are in the squad for todays game it seems.

Dallas is a Northern Ireland player. Very hard working wide player (usually plays left). Runs all day and is a good championship level player.

Those training kits make them look like motorbike couriers.

And the fact they're all running around with backpacks. When the hell did it become ok to wear both straps of the backpack on?

I know the answer is probably in the order of decades, and I'm prepared to hear it.

I get angry about that all the time.

Luke puts his bag on & I'm all "You put that over both arms like that in my school & you'd get one of the straps cut off before dinnertime" & he's all "Dad, you're soooo OLD, everyone wears them like that now".

*sigh*

Rob Green's form makes Ming/Karius look like De Gea/Courtois so Silvestri should get the nod as he has played in the previous rounds. Jansson and Bartley have formed a decent partnership but are nothing special..........but if we play Lucas at CB then we might be susceptible aerially from set pieces and Jansson in particular will be a threat. O'Kane is decent, plays DCM and has a very good range of passing. Sacko (if he plays) will give Moreno problems and Roofe is beginning to develop into a very tidy player (AM). Woods up front lacks all sorts of finesse and is just a battering ram but a highly effective (at Championship level) one. Stuart Dallas will probably play wide left and is a decent player who works hard but lacks real pace. We were linked with their young left back Charlie Taylor last season so it will interesting to see how he gets on.

My biggest worry is about their height advantage because Ayling, Woods, Bartley and Jansson are all good and if we play the team I think we will then Klavan and Origi will be our only two 6" footers.

I think they'll go....................

................................Silvestri......................................
Ayling..............Bartley.........Jansson/Cooper............. Taylor
.........................O'Kane.......Phillips...........
......Sacko.............Roofe................Dallas
.................................Woods.........................

I think they'll go....................

................................Silvestri......................................
Ayling..............Bartley.........Jansson/Cooper............. Taylor
.........................O'Kane.......Phillips...........
......Sacko.............Roofe................Dallas
.................................Woods.........................

Just don't give them any corners.

I get angry about that all the time.
"Dad, you're soooo OLD, everyone wears them like that now".

Yeah, my kids laugh at me all the time for my apparently antiquated ways.

The kids at my school who wore the straps over both shoulders weren't right in the head– they were usually at levels of dork-dom that would now be recognised by doctors as being 'on the spectrum'.

Yep. It's now perfectly normal not only for all kids to do that, but for some kids to walk round with ear defenders on continually, something to do with ADHD I believe.

I laughed at some kid for it (not actually within his, probably limited, earshot mind) ages ago before I knew the reason & Luke told me off for bullying. Oops.

There's also at least two lads in Luke's school, primary, who are openly gay (or claim to be, I didn't know I liked girls at that age) & very camp, yet very popular. I find that very strange, cos if someone was even suspected a bit of being gay when I was in school they were mercilessly tormented.

Cool that kids are so much more accepting now though.

Yes, I definitely agree with that. My daughter is in her first year of secondary school and she has a pal (in her circle of bessies) who is a trans (born girl, but doesn't feel like a girl). My daughter is completely cool and matter-of-fact about it, and I'm just like, 'and everyone is cool with this? No one teases, or gives [do I say her /him/ uh?- I decide to say her] her a hard time?'.

'Of course they are Dad! Why would they? You're so old...etc etc.'.

Luke puts his bag on & I'm all "You put that over both arms like that in my school & you'd get one of the straps cut off before dinnertime" & he's all "Dad, you're soooo OLD, everyone wears them like that now".

*sigh*

I used to wear one strap but found my back and shoulders got twisted as I tend to carry quite a bit around. Now I've gone back to two straps and it's much better. (But I do get told I look like a school boy at work.)

So maybe he's just looking after his back.
