Running Scared - The Future without Klopp

I was going to make this a reply to another post but decided it's more about the club/squad than one player so here's a new thread to vent in.

-------

Worrying seems to be the default position of many on here !

I can't help but think Klopp/FSG are planning for the future with the raft of new contracts tying down quality players. Hopefully (expectedly) Mo adds to that, then it doesn't become a total overhaul when Klopp leaves but more a continuance of what has been established.

As for not having a succession plan in place : this is not something I understand per se. Can someone point out what City did? Or United or Chelsea? They bought in players with each successive manager. There was no succession plan in and of itself. In fact with City that situation is even worse as they are, despite their squad of world-class players, without a single top quality striker, never mind two, even with years to plan for Aguero's departure.

In fact I'd go on to say that we are probably at a more advanced planning stage for the future than any top 6-8 team. Nobody already has the backups for every position in place (I'm not talking about squad players but future first teamers) because nobody can plan that far in advance (top young/established players don't want to come and sit on the bench and be told to wait a couple of years to usurp the incumbent).

Clearly we are planning to, and have been, bringing through talented youngsters : TAA, Jones, Elliott and then there's Gordon, Bradley, Morton and others that may supply a couple more to those now established by the time Klopp departs. In the meantime we are bringing in 1 or 2 more established 22-25 yr old players each season, and that seems to be the long term plan (although none of us know to be sure, of course) and I find that difficult to argue against. Even if we'd have liked another player or two right now.

The club seems to be particularly well run at the moment. I don't get the angst & hand-wringing.

We could easily have 30 years of pain without Klopp so I’m going to enjoy every second he’s here. I’ll worry about what comes after later.

Personally not bothered right now about whom we get after Klopp, we could either go the way Chelsea/City or end up as United have since Fergie but that’s a different issue.
My issue has always been, we have had the best possible manager who seems at times was test tube created to lead LFC from the best lab in Wuhan at times.
However, knowing he will walk away in 3yrs with the best built team in world football in the most honest way possible, has he been backed in the best possible way to ensure they can challenge against the most competitive top 4 in since Jan this year?
It’s about maxmising your returns with current status.

Stevie G will return.

TAA will be our new captain.

The Lizards will sell out and we will have new owners who spares us 150M loose change for transfers every year.

Maybe.

Fuck off to the worry. We were never that bad even in the 30 years we never won yhe title. Fuck right off to anyone who thinks we were so so bad and unfortunate.

4 CL finals in those 30 years ?
2 Uefa finals
X number of league cups
X number FA Cup
3 x runners up in league

Go ask a fucking Spurs fan what a shit team is.

Replacing Klopp is fraught with risk, because it's genuinely impossible on all sorts of levels. I've always hoped we could give him a year break and then allow him to come back. If that possibility was there then the club should bite his hand off, however I suspect he'll want to move back to Germany, potentially coach the national team, and have an easy life. He's more than earned his money and he's got no intentions of staying in the game in his older years.

If we can convince Edwards to stay then we should continue the Klopp legacy and appoint Ljinders to the role. The current set-up has given us the platform to punch well above our weight, so for me the minimum disruption to that is possible. If Ljinders is not ready, then we have to get a manager who's happy working alongside him and is committed to 4-3-3 pressing football and has the ability to work on the budget. Keeping Edwards and Ljinders will minimise the risk of overhauling this squad and changing the manager all in the space of a few years. The worst thing we can do is change everything and start a new 5-year plan, because we'll end up back like Spurs.

I'm happy to enjoy the next 3 years. Will see what happens after. And like someone said, it's not like we were in football wilderness before Klopp arrived. I've seen us win every trophy on the planet bar the PL title before Klopp came, so I count myself fortunate.

All I want is that we win a title again before Klopp leaves, and get to celebrate it before a packed Anfield.

I can't imagine he'd accept a sabbatical. He'd say it's not fair on the incoming manager. And yes I'd like to see Lijnders given a chance. He wasn't ready in NL but it was a good experience for him and after so many years under Klopp it'd be great to keep most of the team intact.

I thought Edwards was gone? End of this year?

You’ll see that in May.

I love this idea and legitimately think Liverpool should at least explore the possibly. I agree, I think Klopp will probably want to go and call it a day but cant hurt to explore the idea. Maybe in the interim, we would have Pep Lingjer running the shop until Klopp comes back. I love Gerrard as a player and I think he's done amazing as Rangers but Im still not 100% that he can manage Liverpool, I have a worrying image that he will do an Ole more than anything, time will tell.

Football under Klopp is supreme, i love everything about this club. Fuck worrying about the future, we are BLESSED with the present. The only downside is that the success he has created brought in a few too many Fifa generation fans who only care about buying 100m players every summer.

Last I heard we were still negotiating with Edwards.

Madrid supposedly after him, but I haven't seen any updates since.

What would Klopp be like as a director of football? So a lot more hands-off and out of the media limelight, but still very much influential within the club in terms of recruitment, tactics, youth etc. It's pretty clear that aside from the big personality and being liked by players, he's also got an exceptional football mind.

And would he be interested?

I am not that optimistic about the chances of us winning the league post Klopp. FSG wants us to live within our means and that is fair enough. Given the current football climate, unless we have an absolute genius like Klopp at the helm, I just don't see a way for us to compete for the league.

As soon as the Saudi takeover of Newcastle is complete, there is every chance that Newcastle and City take turns in winning the league for a long time.

I will be annoyed at FSG if they do not back Klopp with signings in his last 3 years for obvious issues in the squad and let this era peter out.

Would be very difficult for a new manager to work in those circumstances knowing Klopp is there ready to take the job back with the backing of the fans as soon as you lose a couple of games.
