Leeds on Tuesday

I actually not arsed if we put the same side out as against spurs tbh.

We will almost certainly be in Europe next season, which means logically this may well be our best shot at the title for at least a couple of seasons, so putting out a young side in cups to keep our best players fit, especially whilst facing injuries as we current do, is not a massive gamble imo.

A massive gamble would be playing our strongest side against a bunch of dirty cloggers & risking more injuries that derail our league chances.

It's all subjective though, I have a couple of mates I've been arguing this with vigorously who take the (reasonable) opinion that we should be trying to win every game we play with our strongest side.

I just don't agree in this instance.

Buddha I would fancy a full strength Leeds team to get at least a draw against that Spurs team. Only 2 of that Spurs team above started against Chelsea and 3 came on as late subs (giving 5 involved and not 7 as you state). They were hugely ineffectual against us in the last round and the young players are either not very good or (more likely) were overawed by the occasion. If we put out the same line-up as in the last round and they play to the same level as they did against Spurs we could lose.

I disagree (apart from getting the 5 and 7 bit wrong!) as that's a Spurs side worth millions more than the Leeds side we'll play. I also thought they were ineffectual against a really good Liverpool performance that deserved more than a 2-1 win.

I'd be confident of a win with the same hugely promising side (the defence is particularly experienced too) and willing to take the risk, no complaints.

I hope you're right but I was unimpressed with Ejaria, Grujic and Alexander-Arnold and think they were as overawed by the occasion as the Spurs kids were. Maybe if Grujic and Ejaria play as well as we think they can we'll be ok.

Alexander Arnold and Ejaria both had very good games Pesam? They were praised on here and in sections of the press.

Maybe I expected too much from such young players making their first competitive starts because I expected Grujic and Ejaria to really shine against a weak Spurs team. AA did okay but I think the other 2 looked overawed until about the last 20 minutes when Ejaria seemed to start to enjoy himself. I still have very high hopes for all 3 but maybe I should be more realistic about the speed of their development.

Klopp gave Alexander-Arnold his Liverpool debut

Jurgen Klopp is set to make wholesale changes for Liverpool's EFL Cup quarter-final with Leeds United at Anfield on Tuesday night.
The Reds boss has a number of injury concerns ahead of the visit of the in-form Championship outfit and won't take any risks with Sunday's Premier League clash at Bournemouth on the horizon.
Klopp should learn later today the full extent of the ankle ligament damage suffered by Philippe Coutinho in Saturday's 2-0 win over Sunderland.
Adam Lallana will also miss the visit of Leeds as he's yet to return to full training following a groin problem.
Klopp is waiting on Daniel Sturridge, who has a tight calf, and Roberto Firmino, who took a kick to the calf against Sunderland.

The German coach made 11 changes for the victory over Tottenham in the previous round and he will once again hand game time to a number of Academy youngsters and those on the fringes of the first-team squad.
Keeper Simon Mignolet is expected to start in place of Loris Karius. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Lucas Leiva, Ragnar Klavan and Alberto Moreno could line up in the back four.
Kevin Stewart, Ovie Ejaria and Marko Grujic are options for Klopp in midfield, while Ben Woodburn will be hoping to feature after his debut late on against Sunderland.

The Wales youth international attacker became the third youngest player in Liverpool's history at 17 years and 42 days.
Divock Origi is likely to lead the line after his match-winning contribution against Sunderland.

Alexander Arnold and Ejaria played very well vs. Spurs and if i remember correctly didn't Ejaria play particularly well against Barcelona ? If I did remember correctly then you can hardly say he'd be over-awed vs. Leeds.

Well it's confirmed that Sturridge, Lallana and obviously Coutinho will miss the game.

We are only just out of an international break - i'd like us to keep consistency to get players playing together where possible, especially with a new front 3 likely to be needed against Bournemouth

Yeah, I usually want us to win a cup. But given the way it's looking, and with key players looking tired/injured, this year I'd gladly not progress if we got to next weekend with no injuries. If it was only fourth we were aiming for, if want us to stay in the cup, but it's different when we have a realistic chance of winning the league.

Obviously it'd be better to win and not have injuries...

Guess this is a good indication that a few of the U-23s will be involved tomorrow

Who's missing?

Seems like the same players who played against Spurs plus Woodwhatever.

So it's A-A, Ejaria and Woodwhatever. Maybe Randall as well.

AA, Stewart, Ejaria, Woodburn and maybe Randall yeah.

Monk said in his presser that they have a very young team with players that have never experienced an atmosphere like Anfield.

Monk said:

“We go into the cup game now and it’s one we’re going to try and enjoy,” Monk said. “But it’s one where we need to play like we did in that first 20 minutes (at Rotherham) to stand any chance. We’ll see who’s ready physically and mentally. “Along the way I think we’ve used the League Cup to help our league form. Some of our performances in the cup have catapulted our league form so we’re going to pay respect to the game and try to put a performance on.”

That doesn't sound to me like he's planning to play lots of kids, unless his first XI is full of kids anyway, and it wasn't last time I looked. He's just trying to be cute.

"We're under no illusions. It's a very difficult game for us, they're an extremely talented side, they're doing very well in the league and obviously one of the better teams across European football.

"It's a great challenge, that's how we have to look at it. Our young players have a bit of freedom to go there.

"We're under no pressure, the odds are against us, but we have good belief in ourselves.

"It's important these players go through this type of experience because if you want to progress and get to the highest level of football - staff and players - we have to embrace this type of challenge and the atmosphere we face tomorrow."

No way in a million years that is the team.

Personally I'm in the 'we have a great shot at the title - let's not fuck it up by taking unnecessary chances with the few remaining first team attackers we do have, in a 2nd rate cup competition' camp.

Not sure I'm fully aligned with Klopp's comments there

Weren't you team 'this competition isnt an inconvenience' last week?

I wasn't suggesting it was his team anyway - i know we will overhaul given last game, but this is just what i would like to see, as was every other one out there
