Dirk Kuyt scored his 12th European goal for Liverpool last night, to take him level on goals with legendary midfielder Terry McDermott and only two away from Ian Rush, who has 14 European goals.

Kuyt scored the only goal of the game as the Reds got their Champions League campaign off to a winning start with a 1-0 victory over Hungarian side Debrecen at Anfield.

It was Kuyt’s third goal in all competitions this season and the Dutchman says he’s delighted he’s doing great things for the club.

“I didn’t know about the record but I do now,†he told the club’s official web site.

“It’s always nice to be important for the club, especially when it comes to Europe.

“Champions League games are always special, so I’m happy I scored again on Wednesday and now I’ll try to keep going.

“What I would like to do is become more and more important for the team and try to do my best. I’m happy with my performances so far this season but I need to keep going.

“I’m feeling really confident. I’ve played the last two games in a slightly different position but for me that doesn’t matter. I just want to be important for the team.â€

Goalkeeper Pepe Reina was full of praise for Kuyt, who struck on the stroke of half-time to give the Reds the advantage.

“It seems like it’s his competition,†said Reina. “He always scores in the Champions League, he’s got into the habit and letâ™s hope he keeps on scoring a lot of goals. He did a good job tonight.â€

Good Kawt.

Anyone else also impressed by his first touch of late? It has certainly improved a lot since he arrived, I remember the days when he was actually accused of not knowing how to handle a football.

I love the Kuyt Shuffle. You know the one when he has he back to the defender and jink's left then right an d vise versa to try create a yard of space.

Excellent interview but actually his first touch still needs work IMO. It's undoubtedly better than it was, but now and then he can still trap a ball further than I could kick it.

I hadn't realised Terry Mac was so high on the scoring list. He was a real nowhere player when he first arrived at Anfield, but turned into a player worth his place in one of our best ever line-ups. There's a moral in that somewhere.

How to handle a football?
There's a way," said the wise old man,
"A way known by ev'ry forward
Since the whole rigmarole began."
"Do I flatter it?" I begged him answer.
"Do I threaten or cajole or plead?
Do I brood or play the gay romancer?"
Said he, smiling: "No indeed.
How to handle a football?
Mark me well, I will tell you, sir:
The way to handle a football
Is to love it...simply love it...
Merely love it...love it...love it."

Or you can do it the Henchoz way.

Yeah, he only needs half the turning circle of a super-tanker to get it under control these days.

I love Dirk, but people have to recognise his limitations, just as I have come to recognise his strengths

No matter how good form Dirk is in, they'll always be one or two 'Dirk moments' in a game.

It's just how it is.

Rememebr how vitriolic you used to be about him? Quite funny now really.

It's not that funny. I have always said he was a really nice guy who worked very hard , but with few other saving graces, so what's different? His control is average, he isn't that quick and does not have a razor sharp footballing brain.
If we ever brought a proper right sided player Dirk would be in trouble. He is a great squad player.

The man is just relentless, and as a result he gets us big goals.

I have many scum, arsenal and a few chelsea supporting mates and they have a great deal of respect for Kuyt.

Exactly so, credit where it is due. At the time I was "vitriolic" about him, I was right. He deserves a fair amount of credit for his from last year , and so far this year, but I just don't see him as an untouchable like some do

regards

I think you're underselling him there, Vlad. There's few RW's around now who I'd now rather have.

I think his footballing brain and movement are second to none. It's why he still shines despite some of his physical and technical shortcomings.

This season there seems to be more of a poacher about him, too.

(He was fucking shite, though, and I'll stand by that forever)

Ryan, he's a fucking grafter, no more no less. He would not get a sniff in any other "top four team" as a first choice.

"no more than a grafter"

You're delibertaly downplaying his role, and being deliberatly obtuse because you're aware that you've made a cock out of yourself over time re Dirk.

I'm not going to list what Kuyt has brought to us over the last few years, because his record speaks for itself.

"no more than a grafter" for fuck's sake.

I find it odd when people, just like Keni above say they haven't warmed to Kuyt. I think he is one of the most likeable players in the squad and even one of my favourite players. Great for us on the pitch, (chips in with goals, assists and immense work rate and show leadership qualities from time to time) and great off the pitch as he rarely voices an outlandish word to the media. A model pro and as Ryan said a managers dream. He is Rafa soldier so to speak. Yes he drifts into a rut from time to time but never shirks responsibility and is imperative in any big game will play.

To call him a grafter is an injustice to the player. Dirk has shown with important goals and assists that he is clearly more than just a work horse.

Yes, perhaps I am deliberately downplaying his ability to try and bring a balance to this bizarre idea he is only slightly inferior to someone like Messi.
It was only last season when he started to bring anything to the table at all, and I acknowledged that.
If the fact that I think that good old likable Dirk is only better than average mainly because of his work rate, makes me a cock , then yes I am a turgid ten and a half incher with a big thick girth

There's also really no point in carrying on debating the issue with you if you think he's "no more than a grafter". Mindboggling as it is.
