Liverpool defender Ragnar Klavan's Burnley performance prompts bizarre row between Estonia and Faroe Islands
Former Faroe Islands boss accuses Klavan of being a weak link - in a game he never actually played in
Klavan and Kerr
This is one of the more bizarre stories this month.
Brian Kerr is a former Republic of Ireland boss and now offers punditry over there for radio station Today FM.
He was also - crucially to this story - was once manager of the Faroe Islands.
He tore into Ragnar Klavan during
Liverpool’s defeat to Burnley on the radio, saying: "He actually played against the Faroes when I was with the Faroes, and I remember studying him before the matches and thinking he was a bit of a weak link.
"I never thought he was a fellow that would be playing for Liverpool in the Premier League.
"We got three goals against him with the Faroes, and we’d a load of part-time lads.
"A load of lads working in the fishing industry and so on. They were good enough to expose him."
A bit mean about his former employers, but fair enough.
But that isn’t the end of the story.
Klavan, a real hero in Estonia as the national captain, received some backing for these comments -
which were published on Irish website Balls.ie.
From the Estonian FA.
Who proceeded to blow Kerr’s criticism out of the water.
Mihkel Uiboleht, press officer for the Estonian FA, responded with the following in an e-mail to Balls.ie:
"There are three big mistakes in these quotes:
- Faroe Island (sic) have never scored three goals against Estonia as claimed. They scored two.
- In that game when Mr Kerr was coaching Faroe Islands and they scored two goals (07.06.2011), Klavan did not play.
- Mistake number two means that the last sentence 'A load of lads working in the fishing industry and so on. They were good enough to expose him' is not true as Klavan did not play in that match.
"Thank you in advance for correcting these mistakes!"
Unlucky, Brian.
