Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez snaps up Kenwyne Jones on loan to solve striker crisis

Liverpool will try to solve their striker crisis by signing Kenwyne Jones on loan on Monday.

The Sunderland forward is due at Anfield for a medical as manager Rafa Benitez desperately attempts to strengthen his squad for the visit of top-four contenders Tottenham on Wednesday.

Benitez sees the 25-year-old Trinidad & Tobago star as ideal cover for his injured superstar Fernando Torres. The Spain striker had knee surgery in Barcelona this weekend but is not expected to be fit for at least six weeks.

A swap deal with Liverpool for unhappy winger Ryan Babel had been mooted but instead Jones will move to Anfield on loan until the end of the season.

Sunderland have already turned down a £9million bid from Birmingham for the 6ft 1in Jones, who has scored six Barclays Premier League goals this season. Birmingham boss Alex McLeish remains keen to sign Jones and Babel.

Former Southampton target man Jones earns about £50,000 a week — wages City are able to match following Carson Yeung’s takeover — but the player is not interested in switching to St Andrew’s.

Holland star Babel was yesterday told by Benitez he would be fined for his Twitter outburst complaining about being left out of the squad for Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Stoke.

As an indication of his deteriorating relationship with Benitez, who called him ‘unprofessional’, Babel stormed away from Liverpool’s Melwood training ground after a stern rebuke from his manager.

The player headed home but was contacted half-an-hour later with instructions to rejoin his team-mates for their warming down session.

Can't see why Sundrland would agree to that? What benefit do they get from it?

Unless his relationship has with Bruce and the club has deteriorated to the point that they're happy to get rid of him regardless of the circumstances.

I watched the 90 mins of the Chelsea-S'land game at the weekend, and he was crap. He clearly wants out and his performance exemplified that.

I rate him though, and want him.

Good deal if it materialises.

Well, he'll significantly improve our forward options, and it seems pretty risk-free if it's the loan deal as purported, so I'm all for it.

I'm so underwhelmed by this it isn't true.

We're signing, on loan, a mardy Mackem reject who has a personality clash with his manager?

On the plus side, in a year or two we could be competing for the Championship. Alongside Noocastle.

FU KING HELLLLLLLL!

I agree with this, however I was really hoping Babel would go as part of the deal as I haven't disliked a player more since Leonardson (Diouf excluded).

He's a good player Vantage.

I should add that all this is coming from some bird at The Daily Mail, so let's not get the bunting out just yet.

On his day he is a difficult customer. But they are few and far between.

How far have we sunk that we have to sign a player from fucking Sunderland.....on fucking loan?

I think this is a brilliant deal for us.

We need a target man who can hold up the ball.

Jones on loan is a much better option than Heskey (who is shite) or RVN (who is 33 and been ridden with injuries).

Also helps our struggling defence with a big target man.

I like N'Gog but if there no other alternatives, getting Jones in on loan is fantastic business. We desperately need another striker and the sad truth of the matter is that just about any half decent Prem striker would be a big help.

If true, it is strange that Sunderland would be willing to let him go. I'm guessing we'll be paying a fee up front as well as wages, but still...

Jones could really compliment our attacking mids like Gerrard and Aquilani, lots of times this season Torres was lost at sea because our midfield couldnt join him in an attack but with Jones it might make our play better. Lets hope!

Come on Vantage, it's not perfect , but it's something.
I asked the question the other day.
Is Kenwyne Jones better than our other options, the answer is yes, clearly , so it has to be positive.
Would we like better? Yes of course, but in this window that is not going to happen
It's a fantastic opportunity for Jones as well, hope fully he will grasp it with both hands. He is big and strong and can cause problems to any top defenders.
My one concern is Rafa's ability to use him correctly and motivate him.
The thing is , who do we play along-side him, I don't think the others are good enough either.
I think we need to be a bit brave and give one of the kids the chance

regards

yoy see Vantage this is the truth. Im fucking sick of hearing that this player and that player are not good enough for Liverpool. Did you see our strike force on Saturday? If we dont sign someone of Premiership standard, thats what we are stuck with for the next six weeks

Bang on, Vlad! 🙂

Jones is miles better than what we have when Torres is out.

But he still is nowhere need good enough.

Beggers can't be choosers so yes please!

Great news if true. Yesterday was a stark reminder that it is imperitive to bring in a capable striker as soon as possible. The only downside to a loan is that should he hit it off at Liverpool, that fat faced sack of shite will jack the price up if we want to buy.

Can you see yourself getting along nicely with Steve fucking Bruce?

The deal sounds too good to be true, that's for sure. Unless he's got some chronic injury problems and Sunderland just want to get him off the wage bill for the rest of the season.

I don't rate Jones at all but he's an imporvement over the current strikers (Nando aside) that we have. So using that rationale it has to be a positive move

It was reported that there's a clause in his contract which allows him to automatically talk to 'top four' (ha) clubs, which might be the reason Sunderland are agreeing to this. Not sure how it applies to loan deals, though.

Either way, good deal.
