Roy Keane has labelled Ashley Young 'an absolute disgrace' following the winger's diving antics in Manchester United's victory over CSKA Moscow.

The former United midfielder was incensed by Young's actions as the England international stretched his leg towards defender Georgi Shchennikov and went to ground in a bid to win a penalty during Tuesday's Champions League clash.

Speaking on ITV Sport, Keane said: 'If Ashley Young is a Man United player, I'm a Chinaman. He is an absolute disgrace.'

I've just run across this article and seen the video of this comment. Is the term 'chinaman' not considered an offensive term in England? It's a definite nono here in America. It just struck me as odd that it is being widely reported and not a single article I came across addressed the use of the aforementioned term. They all seemed to be very straightforward accounts of Young's dive and how much Keane dislikes him.

Is everyone just afraid that Keane will kill them if they criticize him or is it just an OK thing to say on the other side of the one?

Nah.

Chink or Chinky would have been bad (unless of course you're UKIP, in which case it's 'ok' to say things like that), but I don't see anything wrong with Chinaman.

Americans are just a bit weird is all

Isn't it just the same as saying Englishman? I don't get why it's even remotely offensive. Maybe he should have said, "if Ashley Young is a Manchester United player, then I'm not Irish". And then the Irish could have disowned him.

How the fuck can chinaman be considered offensive?.. Welshman, Englishman, Frecnhman, Scotsman...

Not even remotely offensive on any level. Well, unless someone called me a Welshman, that'd be offensive 😉

Ashley young is the worst for diving in the premier league. There's no problem with Keanes comments, people should be focusing on how much of a cheat that little shitbag is.

I guess in America it's had long enough usage as a perjorative term that it's taken on those connotations. No word in and of itself is offensive, it's only the ascribing of meaning through context it becomes so. Cunt never used to be offensive, now it is.

Or they're just weird. Oriental is offensive as well.

Well technically the equivalent would be Englandman, Walesman, Franceman, or Scotlandman.

Not that those are particularly offensive on their face, just terribly stupid sounding.

He doesn't like UTD does he Keane...

I had to laugh when he was Asked does he watch many games on the TV last night...

His answer was no not really...

I think he still is butthurt about not getting to manage Man U

Never in a million years would Ferguson have allowed it. Keane would probably have been no less suitable for the job than Moyes turned out to be, but that's a rather different matter.
