I think sentencing shouldn't be so black and white. I mean 10 years? He wasn't balls deep in toddler, he fingered a post pubes bint.
If you're drunk out your chunk and slam your car into someone you get a massive sentence. If you're a bit over the limit and get pulled over you get a ban. He seems to be to be guilty of the latter and getting sentenced for the former.

Which is probably one of the reasons the whole "age of consent" thing was considered a bit of faff and nonsense.
Unfortunately he didn't plead guilty until the eve of the trial. Forced the girl to give evidence. Accused her of lying. Lied himself to the court, to the police and to his employers. They're all aggravating factors that pushes the years higher. He though he could get away with it, hired a "top" lawyer, and then rolled the dice. 10 years wouldn't be a surprise. On the other hand a depraved child abusing paedophile knows the game is up. So they rock up to court with all sorts of mitigating mental and psychiatric factors, which help to push the years down.
It's not really about punishment fitting the crime. It's like game theory, and each defendant deciding what risk he is willing to take for what return.

Yeah, just like game theory. I suspect that Adam Johnson had done lots of research into the matter, and his whole 'Derp! this is boooooring' attitude and assumption he was probably going to get a suspended sentence or a fine, was all part of the risk/return calculations that were ongoing at all times in his head, and not in any way the simple actions and thought processes of a vain, arrogant, ill-educated fucking halfwit
