Joel Matip urged to join “super” Liverpool by ex-Schalke star

Jack Lusby on 30.01.2016

With Schalke defender Joel Matip linked with a summer move to Liverpool, former S04 man Christoph Metzelder has described the club as a “super destination”.

Matip is believed to be on Liverpool’s radar ahead of a free transfer at the end of the 2015/16 campaign, when his Schalke contract expires.
The 24-year-old is thought to be the subject of interest from a pair of Ligue 1 clubs, with the likes of Marseille and Lorient likely to be in the market for a defender in the summer.
But according to Metzelder, who also turned out for Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid during a 15-year senior career, a move to Liverpool would be the right choice for Matip.
“This season he is by far the strongest defender at Schalke and an absolute anchor,” he told German publication Der Westen.
“Joel is free. If the interest is from England and he wants to have an experience abroad, then Liverpool is a super destination for him.
Though Metzelder didn’t cross paths with Jurgen Klopp at Dortmund, the 35-year-old believes he is the right manager for Matip.
“Jurgen knows he can work very well with him,” he continued.
“For Joel it would be an easier entry into a new country and a new environment.
“This makes a lot of sense.”

If Matip decides to join Liverpool at the end of the season, he would provide Klopp with an invaluable defensive option.
Strong, agile and aggressive, Matip is a front-footed defender who is able to operate at centre-back, left-back, right-back and at the base of the midfield.
Also comfortable in possession, the Cameroon international would complement the likes of Mamadou Sakho and Dejan Lovren perfectly.
With a strong reference from a former Germany international who has experienced life abroad in La Liga, Matip may be swayed towards Merseyside this summer.
If Liverpool are able to secure his signing, Klopp would be gaining a considerable defensive talent.

Been confirmed in a couple of places today...

#LFC have signed up Joel Matip on a pre-contract. He will join Klopp's side in the summer. (Corriere dello Sport)

Great news!

I thought this was another we've-been-gazumped-by-Chinese-team-no-one-has-ever-heard-of-post

If Matip arrives it will be the start of the rebuild

I have no idea what this guy is like but I am all for buying new unknown centre backs because I know what the ones we already have are like all too well

I really hope it's true and we get the official confirmation from one of the parties. He is exactly what we need.

I also think having Matip here might slightly help us in bringing Sane; I have no information if they are friends or not, but they could well be, given their similar background (both German-born with roots in French-speaking Africa, Cameroon and Senegal respectively) with Matip being a more established first-team player and Sane bursting though the youth ranks last year. Either way it's not a major factor, but maybe it could give us a slight advantage, along with having the most prominent German manager in the world, of course.

Tall bugger - instant plus in the PL, that should stop Carroll and Crouch scoring against us ! Doesn't seem to panic and looks to pass the ball out, decent passer too.

I reckon Sane will go for silly money (60m odd) in the summer if City have anything to do with it.

Dont know if this has been posted:

Maybe its just me, or its a bad game, but he didnt seem particularly convincing in that video, his clearances were poor, whilst he made them look cool and considered, they often fell straight to the opposition, his tackling was decent, but he was hardly a dominating centre back, his decision making about when to come and when to stay seemed a little off to, but that may be due to him playing in what looked like a back three, he basically seemed like a bit of what we currently have, just a little better in the air, tell me I'm chatting shit?

Hopefully that's one of the first choice CB's then, get another one in and we can fuck off all those wasters we've go on the books, or use them for the league cup.

This tug of war with Matip better have a happy ending.

6CM is pretty damn awful when it comes to rating CBs. Huth & Morgan have been rocks for Leicester this season yet according to this forum (over the last couple of seasons) they are both totally useless. What that shows us is that world class rated CBs are not needed to solidify the defence and fight for Top 4.
Next season is going to be very interesting but I'm pretty sure Klopp will be keeping Sakho & Lovren and that one of them will be starting with Matip. If we have a better keeper behind them then that'll be a decent defensive overhaul for me. It'll be a great one if Gomez / Flanno become starting FBs too.

Yeah, I never get any love for wanting us to sign Shawcross or anyone similar. He's the type of defender we need. There was often that same vague snobbery about the quality of defenders like Carragher, Terry, Vidic, etc. Unfairly seen as perhaps a touch more agricultural or lacking a lovely, eye catching technique, despite the fact that Terry is a brilliant passer of a football, and Carra was very gifted too, but they both knew that sometimes what you need to do is send the attacker into a low fucking orbit and the ball into the stands.

I just hope he is a beast in the air, I'm sick to death of seeing us lose every header from every set piece at both ends

I couldn't give a shite if our next center half is limited to one of two things in possession - a hoof or 10 yard pass.
As long as he defends well, makes no mistakes, rarely gets injured and doesn't scare the shite out of everyone around him.

I'd kill for a Carragher right now.

He looks pretty powerpuff in the air. I don't mind having him if it means we get another CB who is totally no nonsense defender. We desperately need one of those.

I noticed it too, but then I noticed that the pitch was very waterlogged in that game, it looked like he had to move with caution to avoid slipping. Here's a more recent game:

As far as that game with Munich goes, check out Leroy Sane's performance. He was up against the speedy David Alaba and getting double and triple-teamed by the end of the game, but still managed to cause problems.

He's 6'4 and has won nearly 80% of all aerial duels this season.
In comparison Sakho has won 56% and Shawcross 70%.

Bundesliga doesn't deal with anywhere near the same amount of aerial balls as in the premiership so its hard to make a comparision like that. Plus when i meant powerpuff i didn't mean that he doesn't win the ball, more that the power when he heads it doesn't seem great. Its like sakho and toure, even when they win a header there's no great power behind it.
