Joel Matip

That's the Harry Kewell injury... 😱

Hopefully not the case though if he has played 17 in a row

More information then... according to transfermarkt, he was out for a month with a "tear in the abductor muscle" early in the season. He then missed 6 games with a bruised foot and 5 with a a fractured one right after the bruised foot. That was all in 2014. Pretty much clean bill of health in 2015 except for a thigh muscle rupture that cost him a weekend game.

How certain of this can we be? I'm waiting for some other cunts to swoop in now. I want 100% on the Ryan-o-meter before I get excited.

BTW if we are talking goal-scoring defenders, Matip's 16 league goals in 177 games translates to 1 goal in 11 games. Would you like to compare that to our current senior defenders?

Skrtel: 16 in 237 – 1 in 15
Sakho 8 in 196 (for PSG and us) – 1 in 25
Lovren: 2 in 71 (for Saints and us) – 1 in 36

And a few of our legends:

Hyypia: 22 in 318 – 1 in 14
Agger: 9 in 175 – 1 in 19
Carra: 4 in 508 – 1 in 127 🙂

And a few other teams' notable CB's:

Sergio Ramos – 1 in 8 (!)
Hummels – 1 in 10
Pique – 1 in 12
Terry – 1 in 12
Subotic – 1 in 13
Vidic – 1 in 14
Kompany – 1 in 16
Mertesacker – 1 in 17
Rio – 1 in 45

Just in case you're wondering, Matip doesn't take penalties for Schalke, all these goals were from corners, free-kicks or open play. So it looks like we are getting our best goal-scoring centre-half in many years.

About the 2nd image: it's not possible on Squawka to sort by % of aerial duels. But you can see from the picture that Matip is in a 3-way tie for highest percentage of aerial duels won this season with 74%.

Just went through these two seasons' games lineups in transfermarkt to see which side he usually plays on. I didn't count it but my impression is that he plays as the LCB about 60% of the time. Depends on who he's paired with:

When paired with Neustadter, he's always LCB.
When paired with Howedes, he's always RCB.
When paired with anyone else, he's almost always RCB.
In a back three, it's split - about half of the time the LCB, and the other half, he's the central CB.

@Markeh - he was injured a bit last season with abductor problems and a bruised and then fractured foot. Played all 17 league games for Schalke so far this season.
So he's a center back then

Interesting stats as always from rurikbird.
As another comparison, Luisão, the Benfica captain who always seems to be scoring goals also has a ratio of 1 in 11.
I think we've got a very good signing here.

I hope it's good-bye to the days we spend crazy money on players like Markovic, Ilori, Benteke, Lallana, Mingolet, Lovren ....

That's an odd list of players to cite rampage. Some were household names and some weren't. Some were bought at inflated prices and others were kids we bought for their possible potential.

Klopp was asked about this directly at the presser and said there was nothing to announce yet. I'm guessing it's just some formalities that need to be taken care of before the announcement can be made; the earlier reports were about an agreement being made in principle, Klopp's words do not contradict it.

I'm more excited about this lads goalscoring record than his ability to defend.
Having decent defenders is pointless if you have a dunce between the sticks.
