Hodgson coy on Cole

July 17, 2010

Roy Hodgson has confirmed he has spoken to Joe Cole but played down talk he is on the verge of joining Liverpool.

Cole is available on a free transfer after leaving Chelsea and has been most strongly linked with Tottenham and Arsenal, but the odds have now shortened on a move to Anfield.

Asked about the situation, Hodgson said: "I'm not a betting man, so that doesn't actually play a big part for me.

"As far as I know, Joe Cole is still a player looking for a club. I know we've been linked with him. I had a very brief chat with him a little while back but, if you want to know about transfer targets, you'll have to ask [Liverpool managing director] Christian Purslow."

Roy, as the Liverpool manager, has spoken to Cole about football and playing for Liverpool. Purslow is responsible for negotiating signing on fee, salary etc therefore having briefly talked football with Cole why wouldn't Hodgson defer to Purslow when reporters are asking if the player is joining us?

Some of you are reading far too much into some off the cuff comments to the press.

Tbph, if 'Cecil' being in charge of transfers means we sell the likes of Insua and El Zhar and buy the likes of Joe Cole, then I'm all for it.

I think he really ought to tell Roy what he's up to, though, because these 'don't ask me' interviews are getting a bit cringeworthy.

Scum on Sunday said:
LIVERPOOL have offered Joe Cole a massive £4.7million-a-year deal to become Roy Hodgson's first major signing.

Hodgson met Cole and his representatives in an effort to thrash out the £90,000-a-week contract for the next three years. Cole could also expect a significant signing-on fee if he moves to Anfield. But with Spurs also in the hunt for the England midfielder, the 28-year-old is still considering his options ahead of the most high-profile Bosman deal of the summer.

Liverpool are desperate to secure a big name to prove to skipper Steven Gerrard and striker Fernando Torres they'll be competing for honours again this season.

Cole's preference appears to be to remain near London, but Hodgson hopes the prospect of becoming one of his most senior players will lure him north.

Liverpool's offer isn't a massive increase on what Cole was earning at Stamford Bridge, but the Merseysiders believe footballing rather than financial concerns will be the main factor in his decision. The skilful midfielder spoke after the World Cup about regular first team football being his main priority, and the Merseysiders' can offer greater guarantees on this score than Spurs and Arsenal, who have greater strength in depth.

Liverpool hope Cole will make a decision by the end of this week as they welcome back their England contingent to training. Hodgson would want the midfielder to immediately start preparing for the new season alongside Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Glen Johnson who end their holidays on Tuesday.

The thing is though, Roy has just taken over a new team, there is a week to go before our first pretty vital match. And he should be were a manager should be, the training field.

If he and CP have drawn up a list of transfer targets, why not let CP handle the negotiations??
That leaves Roy with the footballing aspect, which is his JOB. And CP can handle the transfer merry go rounds.

It's a good deal if you aske me, and not a doom and gloom example for the bellends.

Hodgson relies on Purslow and Macia (the chief scout), it is pure fantasy to suggest he draws up any list

He says we or the press should "ask" Purslow, how exactly do we or the press do this when Purslow is not a public figure and does not subject himself to press conferences? How does Hodgson propose we go about asking him?

I'd say his comments are very concerning about what goes on at the club and there's no doubt who is in charge, every time Hodgson opens his mouth he tells us.

*Yawn*

Is this what there not employed to do. Macia scouts and reccomends players and gets the OK from the manager, and purslow handles negotiations. This happens in clubs all through the premier league. When benitez signed his new contract he was given to much power in his job this was unprecedented in the premier league all the club have done is return to how it should be.

Not unprecedented, Moyes, Fergie, Wenger and nearly every other manager in the league have the same "power" that Benitez got.

Hodgson is on very different terms and Macia was promoted to chief scout after Benitez was sacked. He and Purslow identify the targets and sign them, Hodgson is just the coach who will soon find he is going to be held responsible for other people's failings and have an almost impossible job. He sold his soul for the chance to have what is still perceived widely as a prestigious job although the way it's going that wont be for long

My thoughts exactly Redshrek. These conspiracy theories that are being touted around the net are doing my head in.

How and when are we going to ask Purslow about our transfers then?

Should Purslow be the one doing the press conferences as Hodgson clearly hasn't much to say?

I love the way you spin things to suit your own agenda, Macia has always been cheif scout. And i'm sorry Benitez wanted full control of everything, including negotiating terms for players which is normally dealt with by the chief exec. Moyes and all the others never had this power. Now it's just returned to how it should be.
