Didn't they buy the club on the cheap as well?

Liverpool have taken advantage of Sporting's financial plight to snap up one of their brightest young playmakers for a bargain £1m. Joao Carlos has been playing for Sporting's youth sides since the age of 13, winning the national championship at U14 level. At U16 and U17 level he scored 19 goals for the club, gaining international recognition with Portugal at U16, U7 and U19 level, including a substitute appearance against England in October 2011, in which he played against his new Reds team-mates Conor Coady, Jack Robinson and Adam Morgan. Two months earlier, Carlos had impressed Liverpool officials in a crushing 3-0 win for Sporting over the Reds in the NextGen Series, a Champions League equivalent for European youth football. Sporting and Carlos repeated the performance in November 2011, thrashing Liverpool's U19s 5-1 in Lisbon.
1) He celebrated his 19th birthday on 18 January 2012, the same day Liverpool agreed a deal to sign him from Sporting Lisbon.
2) Utilised by Sporting's youth team in a creative midfield role, Joao Carlos operates in a similar fashion to David Silva at Man City and has already drawn comparisons to gifted Portuguese international and former Barcelona star Deco.
3) The latest product to emerge from the famous youth academy at Sporting which has also produced Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Figo and Nani, Joao Carlos scored an impressive team goal against Liverpool in the NextGen Series.
4) Sporting were keen to hang on to their prized asset for longer, like they did with Nani and Cristiano Ronaldo before cashing in for a significant sum, but their dire financial plight has forced them to cave in and accept Liverpool's £1m offer.
5) As a result of his progress at youth level, Carlos had been promoted to train with the senior team at Sporting recently, but had yet to make his full debut for the club's senior side.
"Liverpool were impressed by my performances during training and the match that I played. The technical team like my style of play, so hopefully they will sign me." Speaking in January 2012

LIVERPOOL’S exciting new talent Joao Carlos Teixeira has made his first appearance for the club – on a badminton court in Kensington.
The 19-year-old Portuguese youth international was snapped up by the Reds from Sporting Lisbon last month for around £850,000.
There are high hopes for Teixeira at the Kirkby Academy where he has started off working with Rodolfo Borrell’s reserves squad.
The midfield playmaker’s debut for the second string has been delayed due to a minor muscle injury but he lent his support this week to the Premier League 4 Sport event at Kensington Sports Centre.
The scheme aims to introduce four different Olympic sports – volleyball, table tennis, badminton and netball – to youngsters in the region. Teixeira attended along with fellow Reds youngsters Brad Smith and Suso.
Gemma Smith, LFC Foundation Premier League 4 Sport coordinator, said: “With the Olympics happening this year we are trying to encourage more youngsters to take up sport. Each week roughly we organise 23 sessions across Liverpool and Wirral.”
