January transfer window

I don't know how much he had to do with Cole or Jovanovic but the two players that we know 100% he rated because he'd worked with them before are Poulson and Konchesky, neither of which are with an ass's roar of the quality LFC requires.

A bit harsh with some of those.

Wilson and Jovanovic weren't his.

Meireles hasn't done much wrong.

Rightly or wrongly, most people on here seemed to think Cole was a great signing at the time.

Konchesky and Poulsen are obviously poor though.

We're linked with Lassane Diarra today. 10 mill £.
We've missed out big time on the last two Madrid clear outs with the likes of Sneijder, van der vaart and huntelaar going for affordable fees, so if they let diarra or benzema go surely they must be worth a look.

I'd have Adebayor in a heart beat, I still think he's the closest thing in the game to another Drogba.
As above.

I liked the way we were playing in 4-4-2 with Kuyt supporting Torres.

In that formation I'd move Johnson into RM and keep Kelly at RB.

I am worried about our CB partnerships. All of the players have weaknesses and Wilson isn't ready. Mertesacker would be a superb buy and do wonders for our defence. One of either Agger or Skrtel can go, probably the latter.

N'Zogbia would do wonders for our left side - played at either LB with Cole ahead of him or at LM when Cole is injured (often it seems).

With Gerrard, Miereles, Shelvey, Lucas & Poulson I can't see us moving for a CM in January. Hopefully Lucas & Poulson move on in the summer and we can get in Lassana Diarra or similar.

I'd love a strong striker to take the load off Torres' shoulders but can't see it happening in January.

So Mertesacker and N'Zogbia in January would be a great window IMO.

Not fully convinced on N'zogbia yet - and this is someone who championed him whilst at Newscastle when he was a teenager - but otherwise I fully agree word for word.

Wigan got a shit-load of cash for Valencia, so I think they will expect a similar amount for N'Zogbia, and he's just not worth £15M+ IMO

I don't think we should buy another central defender unless we're shipping one of either Agger or Skrtel out. And I'm not yet convinced that we should be doing that.

I don't want N'Zogbia. He will be too pricey and ultimately not good enough.

I think we'll spend approx 8-12 M total mostly on depth players and the window will essentially not have a large impact on our season.

Honestly I would rather save our money for summer and do a proper reload then.

The one reason I want (expect ?) us to move for 2 possibly even 3 first team players is that if we fail to make the CL then I think Torres will be off and I'm sure the new owners want to keep him, at least if they realistically expect us to challenge for PL & CL in the next couple of years then they should. I would expect Pepe to stay another season at least unless Barca move for him, Stevie is here for life.

I want a DM and a striker.

The DM should have a fantastic engine, and should be able to cover a lot of ground and also have decent ball playing ability and technique.

Striker should be good enough to start for any of the top 4 teams in the league. I have no stomach for backup striker/ squad player nonsense.

Oh really ?

United - Berbatov & Owen / Hernandez (Rooney is not played as the sole striker except when they have a lot of injuries).
Arsenal - Chamakh & Bendtner / v.Persie (not exactly a standalone striker though in any case). I wasn't keen on Chamakh when he was at Bordeaux but no-one can argue he hasn't been value for money 😉
Citeh - Tevez & Balotelli / Adebayor - well look at the money they've spent.
Spurs - Defoe & Crouch / Pavyluchenko
Chelsea - Drogba & Anelka (then Sturridge) - Not so sure Anelka would be first choice in any of the teams above any more but even if he was - we don't have the sort of cash Chelsea & Citeh can splash around.

So who would you buy (who would be a first team pick in any of the above) within our price range ? Except for Anelka I wouldn't particularly call any of their 'back-ups' as good enough to start (meaning first team pick) for any of the Top 4 (Balotelli is a nutter and most wouldn't ever consider him) !

I defintely understand the concern but I'm really hoping that the prospect of new owners and their longterm plans will keep our marquee players around for one more season. If we trainwreck next season then I'd be worried and expect Torres et al to be off but I hope they will give us one more year, realizing that this year will likely not be a reflection of our short to medium term future.

And I agree with Julian that I don't want strikers that don't have any business starting with us. I actually like N'gog but he has no business as our second striker. We will not find anyone in Torres' quality but we need a player that is a fair bit better than David for our second choice.

It's a given we need a wide player and a striker or two. However, I'm hoping Roy isn't here to make the decision. If he is, we'll probably end up with some shit, expensive and old striker!

Definitely Santa or bellers

Adebayor's off to Juve on a loan-deal come January according to his own words.

we need to hire Juve's sporting director or DOF or whatever he is called. Aquilani and Adebayor on loan is phenomenal business.

The same guy who bought Sissoko and Poulsen?

Hold on...is it Parry by any chance?

It's a different director general, Giuseppe Marotta who joined from Sampdoria this season. Same guy who bought them Krasic.

(The previous one was Alessio Secco.)

our transfer links go from the sublime to the fucking ridiculous. i'm sceptical about the DOF role in general, but i'm bloody grateful for it right now - i genuinely wouldn't have been surprised to see us signing davies and carlton cole in january if it was left to hodgson. i bet our glamour signing would've been shaun wright-phillips as well.

I think you missed Julian's point.
He wants a top class striker that would be capable of pushing for a place in a top four team.
You have helped his argument by pointing out everyone part from us has at least three top strikers, we have one. QED

ANy idea how soon Wilson could be a regular?
I have just been watching a program on the reserves, he looks very good defensively and going forward, as also demonstrated for Scotland.
He really needs some competitive games though.
I hope he gets a chance he is a really nice personable lad

He should get games, and if he doesn't start against Utrecht Roy needs his head examined.

We're linked with N'Zogbia, M'Vila and Benzema today. All players I want and hopefully we'll get at least 2 of them. Fingers crossed.

Hmmm not often I disagree with you Vlad but I do categorically here.

Firstly Julian says very clearly START not PUSH for a place. Secondly my points, though maybe a little obscure, were a) We don't have the money for starting players for Top 4 teams so it's ridiculous to suggest that's what we should be in for and b) re. back up strikers, apart from Anelka and the nutter Balotelli, the other true strikers (not v.Persie like players) are not top class either so that sort of voids his 'not wanting a back-up striker' statement.

Looking at those teams, Chelsea aside, I would take Torres and a good 'back-up striker' over any of those.

*Coughs, splutters, collapses in a heap* ......... do we have a spare £40M to spend on 2 players in January ?

Cunt or not, I've been advocating the signing of Adebayor.

He is a brilliant player. Add Eden Hazard to the mix and I'm made up!
