"People rate the Italian for some reason. To me, he's all mouth. He looks aggressive, but in fact he's as scary as a kitten. I swear I wouldn't mind playing against Gattuso every week. He doesn't hurt you. I have never seen Gattuso play a killer ball. He won't nick a goal either. The kind of midfielder I worry about is Juan Roman Riquelme, Kaka or Ronaldinho. They go: through-pass - bang - goal. Gattuso just plays for the fans. Theatrical. Emotional." [From Stevie G's book]

Yes, why rate a Scudetto winning, World cup winning DM who most rated as one of hte top DMs in the world for a good few years ... Yes, if you're not like Riquelme, Kaka or Ronaldinho - you're obviously not that good. Why did we rate Mascher again?

I dunno - I think Gattuso was a better player in his prime ... that he's so disrespected by Stevie G. doesn't say much -

The extract in question comes from the bit in the book about Istanbul, where Gattuso was at HIS disrespectful best/worst depending on which way you look at it, right from giving Bigears a proprietary pat on his way out to start the game. He who lives by the sword shall die by the sword.

Other players do (and have done) this - in other 'big tournaments' too (notice the WC 2006). How did Gattuso in Athens? Who lived by the sword there? You see how stupid this arguement is? Enough of the greats of the last decade, including people like Paolo Maldini, have praised Gattuso and how important he was to the dominant Milano teams.

For anyone who's a big fan of Mascherano, there is no difference in their style of play - or success (well Gattusso may not have more medals if Mascherano's wife is happy - while her husband starts 4 games or so every 6 months).

Sunderland striker Darren Bent makes transfer request

Bent moved to Sunderland from Tottenham

Sunderland have confirmed that Darren Bent has handed in a written transfer request amid reports linking the striker with Aston Villa.
Reports suggest Premier League strugglers Villa have lodged an £18m bid for the England international.
The Midlands club would not confirm or deny the speculation.
Bent, 26, joined the Black Cats for an initial £10m from Tottenham in August 2009 when he signed a four-year deal with the north-east club.
The forward's desire to leave Sunderland will come as a shock to the club's fans and, if he does exit the club, it will leave a big void for Black Cats boss Steve Bruce to fill.
Bent, who started his career at Ipswich before spells at Charlton and Spurs, scored 25 times last season and has notched 11 goals so far in the current campaign.

606: DEBATE
First Reaction: Gutted. Second Thoughts: £18m + for a clearly unhappy player struggling to reclaim his form - good business.
SwanseaMackem
He has contributed more than a third of Sunderland's 26 goals in the Premier League this season, with his total of eight helping the club to sixth place in the table.
Although Bent missed out on selection for the 2010 World Cup last summer, he did grab his first international goal in September when he scored after coming on as a substitute in a 3-1 win over Switzerland.
Aston Villa, who are owned by American Randy Lerner, are fourth from bottom in the league as they try to move away from the relegation zone.
A deal for Bent, which would break the club's transfer record, would be a show of support in manager Gerard Houllier, despite Villa's struggle for form since the Frenchman took over in September.
BBC Radio 5 live football correspondent Ian Dennis said he understood that the offer from Villa was put forward towards the end of last week.
"I understand it was cash up front which is an enormous show of faith by Randy Lerner in Gerard Houllier," he said.

i've wanted him for years! Why the fuck can't we go for him too?

I don't recall seeing other players do it, but I'll take your word for it that they have. It doesn't make a scrap of difference to the argument - whoever's done it, whenever, it's the sign of a player whose head has grown a few sizes too big to respect the opposition. They - and their supporters - shouldn't then be surprised when others don't show them respect either. That's what I meant by "live/die by the sword" above.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean in most of your second paragraph. All I'll add for now is that I know which of these two players I'd prefer in front of the back four if I were picking a team to save my life. It would very definitely not be Gattuso.

Andy Carroll transfer bid from Spurs 'rejected by Newcastle'
Newcastle United have turned down a transfer bid from Spurs, believed to be in the region of £15million, for star striker Andy Carroll.

The bid has been treated with disdain by the Magpies, whose manager Alan Pardew has told Tottenham not to bother putting together an offer for the striker - even if it is worth double that amount.
Speaking after Newcastle's 1-1 draw at Sunderland, Pardew said: ‘They can bid whatever they like. He is not for sale.

'I am going to say it one last time, he is not for sale.’
The two teams meet at St James’ Park on Saturday in what could be a fiery encounter.
But on Sunday Redknapp appeared to rule out a move, saying: ‘He’s a good player but we are nowhere near getting Andy Carroll.

'How much is he? You are talking £30m to £40m.’
Speculation still links the forward with another London club, Chelsea, as well as Liverpool and Manchester United.

Im trying to think of the last season where we didnt end up on the list of 'Worst signing this season'?

Summer 2010 - Jovanovic and Cole

Summer 2009 - Aquilani

Summer 2008 - Degen, Dossena, Keane

Summer 2007 - Voronin, Lucas (on the plus side we got Babel this window)

Summer 2006 - This one was ok..

Summer 2005 - Morientes, Pellegrino

Summer 2004 - Josemi

We're shit at being good at signing players who arent shit.

[/quote]I dont think Pennant would have made the 'worst' transfers of the year list? He wasnt amazing or anything but he was ok. There are bound to be far worse signing that year.
And Cisse scored in an FA cup and Champions league final. You could hardly call him a flop? We havnt won a trophy since he left.

A penalty in the CL Final doesn't really count mate. Although it does in some way I suppose.

Did you mean the World Club Final?
