It's a Given...

So what odds no Given being our no1 by the turn of the year if Mr. Flappy starts costing us points and loses his confidence.

It's good to have a vastly experienced goalkeeper as a back-up. I'm sure even Mignolet can learn one or two things from him.

I would rather have Given than Jones if Mignolet gets injured and is out for a stretch.

Wait till Doncaster beat us to his signature - then we'll know where we're at.

It's a waste of transfer fee, wages, & time spent doing up with only three days left of the window.

It's also a huge kick in the teeth for Jones, & makes it less likely a young promising keeper will come to us in the future too.

I just don't see the point. If it were a top quality older keeper I'd understand, but given is not that keeper & not worth the hassle.

Has there ever been a goalkeeper signed as a backup that wasn't a waste of money ?

It's a luxury, and not even a particularly good one (think first class on a US Airways flight)

Imagine what we could have done with the money we spent on keepers to sit on the bench just while Reina was here

You're right but in this case perhaps Given can learn Mignolet something. Which I doubt Jones can.

Isn't Given absolutely terrible now?

I can't imagine Jones is that bothered about first-team football as he's not very good and hasn't had much of it throughout his career. Maybe he was given a bit of a silly contract and we're paying him too much - wouldn't be surprising.

Well we wanted Friedel a couple of years or so ago. It just seems odd to move for Given here and now. I did predict that once Jones had been used for his commercially-friendly Aussie-ness on tour the Liverpool Family would abruptly drop him, but it's a peculiar time in the window to do it.

Has Given even been on the bench for Villa lately, or are we actually signing a 2nd choice keeper who is injured?

Not too bothered about this. A second choice keeper is rarely needed, he'll add some experience and will hopefully be relatively cheap, and should be happy not to get many games, so not a bad choice. I don't care too much who our reserve keeper is anyway.

Unless mignelot gets an injury. Then you'll be bothered.
