Of course he owes us. Morally and legally. You don't sign a contract extension on better terms if you're about to up and leave - not if you have anything about you.

Yeah I know that this isn't how it works in practice and footballers seem to get a green card from this sort of thing... But you shouldn't sign up to something you aren't prepared to commit to. Goes for everyone.
I agree with that

This is the opinion I hold as well

Re: Purslows in Spain

In that case, we should keep Plessis, El Zhar, Degen and all the other no-hopers we've signed. After all, we've committed to keeping them for X many years, haven't we?

You normally come up with better logic than that Keni. The facts are that we cannot force any of those players out of the club because of the contracts we and they have signed. They can run their contracts down to become free agents if they wish. On the other hand it seems that a player can force his way out despite the contract he signed

Correct. We have agreed to pay them and they are within their rights to stay and sit around. Most of them would rather go and play somewhere else if they can get first team footy, but if they want to stay they can. I don't see the point.

no one is saying he 'WILL' leave but if he 'WERE' to leave I wouldn't hold it against him. he owes us nothing and its not like the debacle that was owen's imminent signing, torres hasn't strung us along making promises he has no intention of keeping.
You say he owes us nothing. I think he does. Its a game of opinions isnt it?
I think he owes us this season to be honest. Had he not had the time off with injuries that he did, we would not have fallen out of the CL places last year, and who knows what might have happened if we had him for more games the season before.
Now, that's not all his fault I know but we are all in it together.
I think the least he can do is see what happens this year and given the character he is , I would be surprised if he didn't see it that way himself.
The only thing I would also add is this the "one bad season thing" is a but subjective.

However as I keep saying, all we can do is sit and wait, and judge the lad when he actually says something
all valid but its not his fault we as a club didn't purchase enough cover to pull up the slack in his absence.
I hope he stays but in his position he is the wrong side of 25 and hasn't won a single domestic/european thophy and we aren't even IN the CL this season.

Re: Purslows in Spain

He's got a 5 year contract - he can not just up and leave because he doesn't fancy it here anymore. Tough shit Nando - you're here for the next 2 seasons whether you like it or not.

That's not true. A club doesn't have to sell a player.

Is it morally correct to offer a player a new contract when it is just to preserve his sale value and you have no intention of keeping him at the club for the specified period of time?

We didnt have to sell Xabi? Not legally we didnt.

Re: Purslows in Spain

If Torres was to go, Kun Aguero would appease me a bit. He would cost best part of 30million though. Boyhood Liverpool fan to boot.

Masher wants to leave so let's label all Argies disloyal? What point are you trying to make?

Aguero is a self proclaimed Liverpool fan. Doesn't carry much weight but it mightn't harm us if we did try approach him. Anyway, we couldn't afford him unless we sold Torres and even then it might be a stretch as he's been linked to Chelsea et all in the past.

Re: Purslows in Spain

I would like you to point me to the example of a south american coming to europe, being offered a better deal by a rival and not taking it.

It's like Drogba innit. There's always one exception.

I mean If I went to Argentina playing footy for River and Boca offered me double, I'd go - coz I don't care about either of them. That's why Ronaldo got to whore himself to Real, Barca, Inter and Milan. He didn't give a crap. Neither does Aguero.

I have no intentions or desire to point you towards an example. I am not trying to prove Argies or south american for that matter are loyal in anyway. They could potentially be all money grabbing whores for all I know. I stated that Aguero is a boyhood Liverpool fan, I never once claimed he would remain loyal to this if other offers were on the table. However, it might help IF we approach him IF Torres is sold. Other factors could easily outweigh his feeling for Liverpool. (Opportunities for medals and money being two big factors). It can't harm us that he is a boyhood fan of ours. Don't see what's the drama about.

I actually don't think it's as straightforward as that.

I might not exactly be a "fan" of Barcelona or AC Milan but something tells me I would prefer them to their rivals and jump ship from Madrid or Juventus to play at them, but I wouldn't go the other way unless the conditions were pretty bad for me where I was.

Some clubs are just more iconic than others; obviously this is a subjective thing though to some degree but I know my subjective taste is the best.

Re: Purslows in Spain

This is the Ageuro article from a few years back.

Independiente's Argentine teenage sensation Sergio Aguero says he would prefer to join his boyhood club and Champions League holders Liverpool rather than German champions Bayern Munich.

Last week Bayern confirmed their interest in the 17-year-old Aguero, who can operate as an attacking midfielder or a striker, but the Argentine talent is holding out for a move to English side Liverpool.

"If I had to choose a league then it would be the Premier League," Aguero is quoted as saying in the Munich TZ newspaper.

"I have been a Liverpool fan for as long as I can remember and it would be a dream to play there.

"I watched the Champions League final and celebrated every goal as if it was for Independiente."

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has confirmed that new signings will be made in the summer and a striker is expected with the club's shot-shy forwards firing blanks this season.

With German international captain Michael Ballack seemingly on his way to Chelsea, Bayern are also on the lookout for a new creative player and chairman Karl-Heinz Rummennigge said a bid was imminent.

"Aguero has great ability and we need to make a move before the Spanish and Italian clubs join the race, otherwise he will be expensive," Rummenigge told Bild daily.

"He certainly would not be a snip but for a young player of his quality you sometimes have to be prepared to take a risk."

Aguero, contracted at Independiente until 2007, has not been capped by the Argentine national side but is still expected to cost around 15 million euros (18 million dollars).

Yeah it was us over Munich at the time and i'm sure his decisions and motives have since changed but always nice to hear.

I know all that about Aguero, I saw him on his youtube channel playing FIFA as us, coz he always went as us on all games...

When I thought it might hold weight was when he was coming from Argentina to Atleti - at the time I knew all about his love for Liverpool and couldn't fathom why we didn't try and get him then, but the minute he signed for them, his next club was going to be the highest bidder.

True. Would have been a risk to take a punt on a 17 yr untested in Europe. Pity, he turned out to be the real thing.

Where has this Aguero talk come from?
Nowhere. Just a player we all admire. IF Torres was to leave a move for Aguero might appease some of the fans. There isn't many strikers that could appease the fans. Losing Torres would be huge. Villa would have been an example but that door is obviously closed. Would people be happy with KJH being the replacement for Torres? I'd want more than KJH to get over the loss of Torres, if he was to leave.
