No. I've seen us play better under both Houllier and Rafa, and consistently better for a while under Rafa. Especially in the 2008-09 season.
Maybe it's because things really went bad over the last two seasons, but people really tend to have short term memories. There's a reason why we went the closest in 19 years to winning the title that year.
Just so you remember, the core of the side comprises of Reina, Hyypia, Carra, Alonso, Mascherano, Gerrard, and Torres. Seven, that's right, seven, world class players in their prime (except maybe Hyypia, and let's face it, he was pretty fucking brilliant even in his twilight). With some other really good functional/support players in Arbeloa, Riera, Yossi, and Kuyt. I have no doubt that if that core had played together for another year, and added maybe another legitimate match-winner, we'd have won the league. Except we know what happened with H&G and Rafa's stubborness/mentalism.
The core of the side isn't anywhere as strong as it was then. Really, the only identifiable world class players in the squad are Reina and Suarez. Carragher's moved on in age and form, and there are question marks about the likelihood of the Gerrard of old returning.
While we've done a great resurrection job by getting rid of the deadwood, and getting in some really good functional, support players in Adam, Downing, Enrique etc. and a lot of potential in Coates, Henderson, etc., we still need world class quality in key areas of the pitch (CBs and CMs) if we really want to challenge for the title. We might possibly get that in the likes of Coates or Henderson, but until that happens, we need to look at things more pragmatically. Rebuilding a side is one thing, and talking of playing the best football in 20 years and mounting a title challenge is quite another.
I'm being sort of cautious I guess. The new owners, Kenny, Comolli etc. all have done fabulously so far, but let's face it, half of us thought that Rafa was the second coming of Shankly. So let's just wait a bit before we can pass judgment on how well our side is shaping up?

I don't agree with all of it but that's a cracking, well considered post.
