The passing accuracy, possession, the pass and move and width. Things that all the previous managers failed to establish. You have even non-lfc fans praising us. Hail king kenny.

We played some great stuff under Evans, Houllier and Rafa, but too infrequently, and people have really blinkered memories of us under Evans, we played really shite quite alot. I think we look more consistently cohesive than I can remember us looking for a long time. Even when we're shite we still get the ball down and pass it around, half the time it's the edge that's missing these days rather than the style of play. Too many times under the others we just played like fucking strangers.

no. the 08/09 season where we were chasing manu for the league is the best we've played since the we last won the league. what we did to real madrid at home was incredible.

It was the game at the Bernabeu which started it IMO. After that we played the best football in the league right to the end of that season. I don't think we've quite reached that level yet, though I'm confident we will under the King.

On a side note, when we're in the CL again next season you can bet Real will be praying they don't get drawn against us. 100% record against them with no goals conceded. 8)

Under Rafa we played some fantastic football but not consistently enough.

The signs are all there for us to return to our former glory but we need to be a lot more consistent and ruthless.

Our passing and movement off the ball is great not to mention our attackig play. We're still improving and I'm loving the lads confidence. As the team gets to know one another a little better, we'll steadily improve and do great things.

No. I've seen us play better under both Houllier and Rafa, and consistently better for a while under Rafa. Especially in the 2008-09 season.

Maybe it's because things really went bad over the last two seasons, but people really tend to have short term memories. There's a reason why we went the closest in 19 years to winning the title that year.

Just so you remember, the core of the side comprises of Reina, Hyypia, Carra, Alonso, Mascherano, Gerrard, and Torres. Seven, that's right, seven, world class players in their prime (except maybe Hyypia, and let's face it, he was pretty fucking brilliant even in his twilight). With some other really good functional/support players in Arbeloa, Riera, Yossi, and Kuyt. I have no doubt that if that core had played together for another year, and added maybe another legitimate match-winner, we'd have won the league. Except we know what happened with H&G and Rafa's stubborness/mentalism.

The core of the side isn't anywhere as strong as it was then. Really, the only identifiable world class players in the squad are Reina and Suarez. Carragher's moved on in age and form, and there are question marks about the likelihood of the Gerrard of old returning.

While we've done a great resurrection job by getting rid of the deadwood, and getting in some really good functional, support players in Adam, Downing, Enrique etc. and a lot of potential in Coates, Henderson, etc., we still need world class quality in key areas of the pitch (CBs and CMs) if we really want to challenge for the title. We might possibly get that in the likes of Coates or Henderson, but until that happens, we need to look at things more pragmatically. Rebuilding a side is one thing, and talking of playing the best football in 20 years and mounting a title challenge is quite another.

I'm being sort of cautious I guess. The new owners, Kenny, Comolli etc. all have done fabulously so far, but let's face it, half of us thought that Rafa was the second coming of Shankly. So let's just wait a bit before we can pass judgment on how well our side is shaping up?

Too early to tell, to be honest. It's looking good though.
I personally believe we played our best football under Rafa but it was more entertaining during Evans time.

Yep. I'm expecting 3rd place with an outside chance of better.

Dmish summed it up perfectly.

We're not even playing great football at the moment really.

Whilst i agree with every word he wrote, and have decided to overlook that he didn't mention John Arne Riise in that post........i still choose to blindly believe that we will win the blardy title.

I don't agree with all of it but that's a cracking, well considered post.

I think we played our best football in 08 but I think a lot of that was born of desparation of having nothing to lose in the run in. I also think last season there was no pressure on the team to perform when kenny came in as many were just relieved not to be involved in a relagation battle, this season the team will be under huge pressure to deliver CL football.

That's why I want us to go top early as possible. See how the team cope under pressure.

excellent point. Worryingly, of all our purchases, the only one who is used to high levels of pressure the top spot brings is suarez.

Hopefully the rest have the fight in them (which they do, obv)

Every team which is trying to get into/back into the reckoning for the title has to cross this hurdle. The Mancs did it when they first won the title with the kids of the "golden generation" years ago. It was their manager who made the difference and I'm confident ours can do the same.
