I've never understood this "inside information" concept. Most sport is played in public, where anyone can watch it.

For argument's sake, what "inside info" could Lovren give about Liverpool players?

"Yeah, Lucas. He's quite slow. Can be exploited by running at him. Sakho is prone to coughing up possession in dangerous areas."

What could he tell anyone that isn't entirely obvious already?

Good point. Maybe who the leader in the dressing room is, and how to psychologically break him.

Only three pure center backs, laughable.

Completely unbalanced and lacking in defense.

Yep. Two of them are out of form as well, Cahill and Stones. Apparently the thinking is that Dier can cover if necessary, which ignores the fact that Tottenham moved Dier to DM (where he's admittedly done well) because he was hopeless playing at the back. Typical Hodgson lash-up.

That selection alone is a sackable offense.

I'm no massive Defoe fan, but given his goalscoring record this season surely he should be higher on the totem pole than Marcus fucking Rashford.

He is. It's a common misconception that a higher slot on the totem pole indicated higher status. The opposite is actually true. [Fetches anorak]

Agree with the point you're making though. Let Rashford join the squad for training by all means, but Defoe should be ahead of him for selection.

Fair question. My answer would be that I'd have taken Shawcross as well. I know none of them have exactly been pulling up trees, but if anything that's all the more reason to give ourselves options.

Forgot about Shawcross, and it would probably be worth taking him.

I don't think it would be a major issue if Hodgson had a way of compensating - ie having one full back who could play there, or playing with two defensive midfielders to provide extra shielding for the defence, but I expect England to commit too many men forward, leave the defence exposed with the inevitable occuring.

Ooh, I didn't know that.

*ensures this is filed away in 'do not destroy' section of brain, undoubtedly pushing out something important like a password*

He didn't want to play at fullback so rumour had it, but I think he's always been a versatile player who has done OK in all three positions, and was always considered a player who could easily play DM and CB

He wasn't 'hopeless'

I saw him once or twice at CB and he looked lost to me, so much so that I've been very surprised by how well he's done (and there's no question about that) in midfield.

Yeah, he was pretty awful. Wont be surprised if he looks out of his depth in the EC.
One of those players in the Spurs team who look better in that team then he really is, in my opinion obviously.

I think the misconception is largely due to the fact that there often isn't that much agreed convention attached to position, but that "real" people were likely to be lower on the totem pole - and thus interacted with the most at more eye-level - and the higher ones were more likely to be animal gods or monsters or whatever, or something to do with what the entire tribe was called - "The Grey Eagles".

I also read something once that said the lower carvings were better and more detailed because they were done first and were easier to do without using a ladder, but that didn't really make sense unless a totem pole is made from an existing, upright tree.

Anyway, another interesting diversion.

Yeah but that said, what decent centre backs do England have?

Fair point, but if one gets injured they have no backup, unless they want to play people out of position.
Also in such an important part of the team.

I guess Shawcross, as mentioned, or even Jagielka.
