No Walcott, no Baines or Carrick.

Goalkeepers

Joe Hart, Fraser Forster, Tom Heaton

Defenders

Nathaniel Clyne, Kyle Walker, Danny Rose, Ryan Bertrand, Chris Smalling, John Stones, Gary Cahill

Midfielders

Dele Alli, Ross Barkley, Fabian Delph, Danny Drinkwater, Eric Dier, Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Adam Lallana, Raheem Sterling, Jack Wilshere, Andros Townsend

Forwards

Wayne Rooney, Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy, Marcus Rashford, Daniel Sturridge

I know it's a big squad and that many of those players won't play much, but I think the likes of Rashford, Wilshere, Sterling, Stones and Heaton can count themselves quite fortunate. And as for Fabian Delph. He's hardly played has he?

And is Drinkwater any better than Mark Noble?

Jules will slaughter me for this (possibly rightly so considering England's record of injuring players during training), but if Sturridge can remain injury free he may have an incredible tournament. We've been playing him sparingly & he's had a long time to seriously build up his strength & fitness for the first time in a few years, & we all know how good he was that season.

If Hodgson plays Rooney further back (or even further back, in the tunnel), & plays to Sturridge strengths, England should do well, there's a fair bit of both strength & pace in that squad.

why Rashford and not Defoe ?
Rooney has been pretty good at times playing deeper for united since his return but I'm still not sure he fits into the starting eleven

there's some great options in midfield there, the forwards have all shown their capable its just the defence that doesn't fill me with confidence but if you've got Milner and dier deep then that'll help alot.. I really think that group of players could get to the semis easily enough .

might stick a few quid on it

This Rooney debate (where he plays/ should he play) is going to consume the media. Roy's been pretty unequivocal in his support, but even as Rooney himself cedes to the passage of time and available (superior) competition by moving inexorably backwards into midfield, he might find that area quite congested too.

Plus, when Rooney is "off his game" - and I've made this point before - he is MORE off his game than any other player I've seen. To the point where he's a genuine danger to his own team. That could be utterly ruinous if it happens in midfield.

Rashford, Delph, Wilshere and Townsend. Yikes. Unfit, to young and a bit shite sums that up.
Noble should be in there. Only 3 cb's?

England will probably go out in the group stages.

Gerrard could be almost as bad when he was off his game too, at least around his peak years. He'd run around trying to do everything & replace his quality with quantity, & every other player would indulge him (obviously, as anyone would do when Stevie is on the same pitch as you). He'd push everyone out of position & then fail to do their job, & obviously not be in a position to do his own. By playing him further up the pitch & making him make runs constantly Houllier negated this issue, & it gave the team an advantage in doing so.

Rooney is very similar, in that he'll drop deeper & deeper to try to win the ball, make stupid tackles & generally get in everyone's way whilst not doing his own job, & when playing deep, push up to try similar, which is arguably even worse.

I read this morning that Benteke has a better goals to minutes ratio than Rooney this season. No idea if that's true or not.

He'll be lucky to start considering how Kane and Vardy have been playing, and Roys permanent erection for Shrek.

I don't get why West Ham fans are SO outraged about Noble being snubbed. He seems like a good bloke, and he's understandably popular with his own fans, but is he more than just a steady eddie player? He's not going to be courted by Chelski or either of the mancs or Arsenal or us, he's never been that good and he's not going to get better at this stage, and I can't see he'd be more than mediocre at international level. Poor old Hendo gets the abuse for supposedly 'taking' Noble's place, but I'd rather have Hendo than Noble for either team.

Yeah, but Rooney at his worst often looks like he couldn't trap a bag of cement, and then looks as if he's trying to pass one aswell. He had one of those games very recently too, it was really painful to watch, and I like Rooney as a player.

Far worse than Stevie at his worst. But he'll still play!

I know he hasn't really had a run of games due to injury, but Sturridge seems to be a bit too selfless when I've seen him play for England - he plays like he does when he's low on confidence, dropping deep and wide rather than trying to be the focal point of the attack.

Rooney scored 7 league goals this season in 27 matches....
He'll start the first match in France. Guaranteed.

I expect Wilshere will also start.

It's arse about tit, really, the whole Rooney thing, and it has been for a while. Picking a captain before you know a) how you want to play and b) which players suit that sort of way of playing means that straight away you're trying to shoehorn someone in regardless.

I think it's more that Drinkwater hasn't really done much before now, and the likes of Ryan Mason, Jake Livermore and Tom Cleverly have all been given more opportunities than Noble.

And they have a point there.

Yeah, but that's the England way. Paul Scholes on the wing, for example.

Wilshere as a DM is a little worrying, given how he likes to play football would be utterly disastrous in that position.

Wilshere is a great player in a virtual world where no one gets injured. In the real world, he's a player with genuine talent who seems obsessed with holding on to the ball and inviting tackles, which hurt him all too often. He's simply always going to be a gamble. And seeing as Hodge has left his team relatively weak in central defence, risking picking a midfielder who might struggle to play more than a couple of games is uncharacteristically daring.

That seems to be genuinely how he likes to play; running slowly at players hoping to dodge the challenge and keep the ball in close quarters. That's questionable enough further up the pitch, it's going to lose us games if it's in DM.

Noble has arguably had a better season than Henderson.

Noble has arguably had a better season than Henderson.

I don't think it's much of an argument. Henderson's been wracked with injury and has not played anywhere near his best in many games.

Although they're not really that similar as players.

You could list several players who've had a better season than Henderson, or Sturridge, in their respective positions. That doesn't mean they'd be a better bet in a tournament if our players are fit again.
