The players are good, but not world-class, and the manager is completely inexperienced. Talks of being favourites were fucking laughable. France, Portugal were always the ones to beat, and Italy under Mancini have developed into a brilliant football side. Germany can never be wrote off as well, despite some dodgy form leading into it. England were nowhere near any of them, IMO.
When Southgate first took the job he spoke about playing the young players, building a squad that can grow together and compete at the top of the tournaments. At some point this completely went out to the window. Instead we now have an overly conservative, bland and pragmatic approach. We're at Southgates second tournament, which was also delayed by 12 months, and Southgate still has no idea what his strongest side is. Players like Trent and Sancho nearly didn't go/haven't been used when any sensible manager would have integrated them into the team years ago.
He's made Kane captain over Henderson, which was a monumental cock up from day one, and now looks even worse when Kane is clearly unfit or injured. Kane is a self-proclaimed 'leader' whereas Henderson is an absolute master of it.
All in all I don't give a fuck. I increasingly find myself identifying far closer with the Scots than I do the English these days, and I was happy for Roberson he led his team to a very decent performance. Scotland has ten percent the population of England, but you wouldn't' have guessed.
I still find myself cheering when England score, but I also enjoy watching the hype-machine getting crushed and destroyed every 2 years, and watching some knobhead dressed as Saint George cry into his pint.
