if we indeed get a new CB

Well if they were all fit, which is unlikely, it would be a conundrum, on play alone I would say yes, the only thing is Carra does drive from the back and marshal the defense, but we need to start thinking about life without him.

Depends on the CB we get. A strong and commanding one could see Carra slowly phased out this year. However, given Skrtel and Agger its really hard to say.

Three at the back maybe?

Reina

Cahill Carra Agger

Johnson Enrique

Lucas

Gerrard Downing

Carroll Suarez
Yuk, that's horrible old chap, not to mention around £25m of new signing sitting on the bench, just to accommodate, a crock and accident waiting to happen and a slightly over the hill war horse.

I agree. Was just toying with the posibility of playing three at the back, if we do sign Cahill, and if Agger stays fit.

P.s. whos the accident waiting to happen? I presume the crock is agger and the warhorse is carra

a crock - agger
accident waiting to happen - johnson?
over the hill war horse - carra

for the record I'd drop carra if we secured cahill. I think what cahill would give us would outweigh what carra gives us with regards to organising the defense. as for agger, when he is fit he has to play as far as I'm concerned.

Sorry yes, Skrtel , which might have been a bit obtuse as he was not in the selection but who would be the other option- there is one good fuck up in him every match

ha ha it's funny that the term 'accident waiting to happen' is ambiguous when applied to members of the liverpool defense

It'd be Carra and the new signing. Carra is still better than our other options.
I think a fully fit injury free agger is a better bet than carra.

Yeah, so my money is on Carra.

Actually I believe Carra is better than Agger fit or not. He's still one of the few leaders we have in the team.

Edit: It all really depends on who that other player is anyway, for central defence more than for any other position, it's about partnerships, and how they complement each other.

This is where i'm unsure. If Agger and Carra are fit they should both start. Surely Kenny wont spend 10-15 mill on a CB and leave him on bench. Hence the back three option. Not sure at all. According to Commolli its highly likely that Enrique will be final incoming player of the Summer so maybe its a moot point.

I don't agree with the assumptions throughout this thread so far that (a) the new signing would walk into the side and (b) just the one player would make way for him. AFAIC the start of a new season is clean slate time. Everybody has an equal chance and nobody, big signing(s) included, has an automatic right to a place. We should pick the best pairing as each game comes up, and it's highly likely that that will involve more than just the one.

I think you have to pick what you feel is your best CB pairing and stick with it. you'd have to assume the reason for one CB to making way for another is because of leaking goals and mixing around your CB's may exacerbate the situation rather than improve it. you can mix and match your fullbacks but CB's really need to remain consistent so they build an understanding.

Yeah, I agree, it's a big assumption that we will even sign one, let alone that he'll end up better than what we have, and that he'll suit any of our CBs more than another. Even if we knew all that, we'd be making assumptions on form and the type of teams we'd be playing against.

to go further with my point, when sami came into the side v manu at a moments notice and put in a man of the match performance, that is utterly incredible and should be considered the exception rather than the rule for changing your CB. spurs keep drafting in king on a whim, it's no wonder they leak goals.

Gerry will correct me if I'm wrong, but I read his post as agreeing with mine rather than yours. 😉

As it happens I partially agree with you in that I wouldn't be in favour of changing CBs (or any other players for that matter) on a whim either. However, as Gerry says we'll need to look at a number of different factors when selecting each line-up. The assumption that one CB partnership will necessarily remain the best one throughout is an assumption too far IMO.

It's not really a whim though, King has been their best centre back for years*. It's just a pity for their (and England's) sake that he is made out of the same stuff the made Aurelio out of.

*Although Dawson has come on leaps and bounds

Yes, Carra should be the one making way as when fit Agger is a much better footballer. Cahill/Agger CB pairing would be immense!!

Not convinced. Cahill and Agger are a lot more similar than Cahill and Carra, which could well turn out to be the better combo.

Yeah maybe if Carra was about 5 years younger, he is clearly past his best and is on the decline. Cahill/Agger would be the way to go if he signed
