It's true that in the US midwest, and north east the snow removal is by and large superb, depending on how poor the area you live in is, however there are vast swaths of the country that can't handle an inch of snow.

Probably because it would make no sense for them to have fleets of snow removal plant lying around rusting for the odd snow event.

Btw you English really do get in a hissy about any little bit of snow and cold weather eh? Where I live here in the states we received 24 inches of snow in a 2 day period and temperatures have routinely been sub zero. Not the best of conditions but the snow plows get to work and we get on with it.

While it seems as though the UK is not adequately prepared to dealw ith anything like the snow that has come, it's understandable given how rare such conditions are.

By contrast, I live in a region that has just 60,000 people for an area about the size of the UK (using Vlad's population to area comparison above) and our streets and highways are completely plowed and there are no problems. The difference is that we get this stuff every year, we've invested the time and effort because we need it. I genuinely wasn't sure how good the snow clearing was going to be up here when I moved but have been pleasantly surprised so far.

And I'm not going to act smug about how well-prepared we are compared to the UK. We should be. *shrug*

(As a matter of fact, Native communities up north have better transportation in the winter because they have groomed winter ice roads. During the summer the communities are fly-in only. FYI, like.)
