I want ‘Angel’ De Ligt

I starting to see how getting a young CB is of importance. We need some natural progression our squad. We have a bunch of players occupying the same position that are basically the same age. The CB position is one, wing forward/striker is another. All of the are around 27-28 years old.
We need to sign a few more players who can be seen as their future successors.
But Ajax are going to be asking for stupid amounts of cash for De Ligt.

Pay them what they want I say

For CBs some of ours are still to reach the top of their game, 28-30, and of course can easily go on to 32-34.

That's even without the youngsters coming through, Hoev'er (sp) looks ace. Didn't Macca say Masterson too?

I wouldn't be blowing a huge wad on a CB this year. Plenty of time for that.

Masterson has been released

Note that VvD and De Ligt are going to be playing together against England tomorrow night. Depay will be up top.

Hoever
Van Dijk
Wijnaldum
Depay
De Ligt

We could be very Dutch by the start of the season.

Klopp has already been joking about himself as a German having to rely on Dutch players so much. Those two cultures are similar in some ways and polar opposites in others. My favorite national team games have always been Germany vs Holland, sparks were guaranteed to fly. I'm sure Klopp appreciates the mix of solid tactical training and creativity typical of Dutch players, but for your own sake please buy some good Germans, Jurgen!

Makes absolute sense. But I want a younger CB that could learn from "the older guard" so to speak.
Look how long we had to wait for another Hyypia type CB in Van Dijk.

We were definitely looking at Lloyd Jones and it is annoying that we didn't get that over the line. I assume if we continued our interest that he decided he had a better chance of starting games at Bournemouth. I wonder is there another player with a similar profile out there that we can have as an understudy?

Yeah I don't blame him and no I can't think of many. There's talk about the former Chelsea kid Panzo, he's at Monaco now but I haven't really seen much of him.

Sport in Spain (a Barca paper) has stated that Barcelona wont pay the Agent fee of which he's demanding 20% top up.

This would take the deal to close to £75m/€85m.

Which leaves four clubs in the running if Sport is to be believed

Us
Juventus
PSG
Man Utd

Several publications state that de Ligt has no desire to join Man Utd, despite Raiolas links and Man Utds willing to pay whatever it takes.

So that leaves 3 in 3 different countries. I'm surprised City aren't being mentioned with Kompany going. Perhaps they dont want to pay that amount on a CB.

Sport went one further and said his agent only sees him joining us or PSG.

Of course I fully expect Barcelona to reach an agreement at some point over the next week.

@Frogfish - Hoever will start with us at RB, similar to Gomez. Eventually he may move to CB but he doesn't have the stature yet. I do hope he breaks through next year.

For the record, I haven't seen enough of De Ligt to say we should sign him but I doubt his signing would herald a change of formation. Given how impressive Gomez was before his injury and how good Matip is, I would say that if we sign him it would only be because Klopp thinks that Gomez is gonna have continuous injury issues

I have a feeling that Van Dijk is the main driving force behind any push for De Ligt from our side, if there is one. I doubt a young expensive CB would be anywhere near the list of transfer priorities otherwise.

Don't forget, Fabinho boys. He's basically our 5th choice CB.
Also let's see if Lovren leaves first before we start a camp fire here

The way I see it, De Ligt would likely replace Lovren.

We'd then have an improving, potentially world class back-up to Van Dijk in that vocal leader CB role.

Welcome to my camp! That's the way I view it too.

Hoever is too green and not big enough. One injury to VvD and we are too thin at the back.

I don't mind paying 75m for VVD. He walked in and immediately demonstrated he was incredible and improved everyone around him. Do we pay the same money for "an improving, potentially world class back-up" when we should be throwing the kitchen sink at some other positions? I know we are doing well financially, but to me that's just wasteful. Modo is right about Fabinho as another guy who can fill in in a crisis, and we have Gomez and Matip who have proved to be excellent.

I do see the logic in getting De ligt but ony if all other avenues in seeking other players have been exhausted. Is there really no other CBs in world football that is good enough to partner VVD apart from this de ligt? If not then YES get him, but if there are cheaper high-quality alternatives then maybe not.

Don't get me wrong if we got de ligt our defence would be watertight.

He doesn’t look that good to me.
Have to agree, people here seen to forget that fuck up against Spurs in the semi final. A game they should not have lost bit did. I really hope we dont blow the best part of our transfer budget on a defender when what we need is a midfield creative of some kind.

Are we now in a position where we buy players or at least feign interest just to piss off opposition teams?

It's happened to us plenty of times with us trying to buy a player and other richer clubs coming in to buy the player and then not using the player... Chelsea and Salah being an example

People keep forgetting he's 19. How good was Virgil at 19? In fact how good is any world class CB been at 19?

It's how you recover and learn from those situations.

People think that Gomez can play every game of the season and not get injured. We've not yet seen him complete half a season.

I was one of the posters last year who banged the give Gomez a chance at CB drum. The majority said he wasnt good enough or he wasnt proven.

I just look at City who have a solid base this last season, take Laporte out, Stones in. Take ottamendi out. Kompany in. All 4 CBs you'd argue pretty solid, and wouldn't suffer too much whichever was playing.

If we want to win the league, we cant be playing with plug and play players like Fabinho at CB. Hes our best DM by a mile.

In my view we have 1 world class CB in virgil, 1 CB who's good and has the potential to be great but can't stay injury free in Gomez. 1 CB who has had a purple patch in the 2nd half of the season in Matip and 1 CB who's ego will lead to at least 1 fuck up per game in Lovren.

De Ligt would give us two CBs who are good and have the potential to be great.

Agree with all that but in a world of finite resources I'd rather have a boss AM and some competition for the front three.

De Ligt could be ace, but there's no guarantees with him either. He's a massive unit at 19 so he could become some injury prone dude carrying loads of beef pretty soon. I'm happy with the defence for the first time since Sami left.

Yeah, if we could literally buy all the players, de Ligt would be well worth a punt even though it is a position of relative depth in the squad. As it is we have screaming priorities in the FB positions and the front 3/ AM that must be addressed first.

"Why do you want to sign Zidane when we have Tim Sherwood?" Jack Walker to Kenny Dalglish when he wanted to bring him to Ewood Park in 1995

Nah we're not buying him, we're good at CB

Lovren seems more like someone who would want to prove he can get his place back rather than go to a worse team. And like him or not, he's a very good back up CB to have, there are not many teams with 3rd/4th choice centre backs at his level. Why would he leave (unless Klopp tells him to fuck off a la Sakho - which is unlikely)?
