I want ‘Angel’ De Ligt

Do we need him? I'm really not convinced. With Gomez we have a really exciting and young partner for VVD and Matip has more than earned his spurs (excuse the pun) in the last season.

Depends whether one thinks Lovren is good enough and/or likely to stay as probable 4th choice. If yes to both I don't see CB as top priority but, immediate priorities aside, if de Ligt were to become available at an acceptable price I'd want us to fetch him in right enough.

I'm a fan. Sell Lovren. That'd give us 4 first team CB's.

Problem is, we are one VvD injury away from being thin at the back. We've been spoilt that he stayed injury free really.

I doubt it will happen. But if it does, then that's a solid depth chart.

Dunno but maybe it's a move to 3-5-2?

De Ligt - VvD - Gomez is incredible

The thing is, he is bound to be a huge price given the fact we're vying with a gaggle of European giants. I actually don't think Lovren is good enough, or likely to stay, but I would prefer that we invest in the next De Ligt (Loyd Jones would have been perfect) at a sensible price, rather than paying top dollar for a position where we have some quality players already.

Any of our top 3 get injured and we have a significant drop in quality. If we make one marquee signing this summer I want it to be someone vying for the front 3 positions.

I wouldn't actually disagree with any of that, Doc, but opportunities sometimes arise which cut across the priority list one thought one had. If we get such an opportunity with de Ligt (and I do say "if" because you're right, price is important) I wouldn't want us to turn it down.

Yeah, I also wonder whether CB is really a priority for us at the moment.

It'd be pretty harsh on Gomez.

And we're sooo thin on quality competition up front.

Yeah we lose VVD to injury and its hello 2016 Liverpool defence again. Let's not pretend VVD makes those other defenders better.

But I agree the price is going to be VVD high...aren't there other alternatives? And if not wouldn't getting de light be dependent on selling Lovren for at least 25m and possibly Matip too.

Due to Gomez, who I think is a cracking defender being one way another being on-off injured for the last 3 or 4yrs solidly, I'd be more than happy to have De Ligt as a partner for Virgil, and have Gomez as the 3rd choice, and Matip 4th. If Gomez had been injured just last season, then I'd say it was harsh and we should see how this year goes, but, as he's being injured consistently every year I think we'd have to make the call and demote him to 3rd choice for good of the team. And there's nothing wrong with having a great CB on the bench, we need that depth to compete. No point in having donkeys on the bench.
I suspect De Ligt has already been tapped up for elsewhere though. Ajax are going to super rich but decimated this summer, much like what happened to Monaco.

I'm a fan. Sell Lovren. ............
Not sure about that. Mo LOVES Lovren. They are bezzies and seem to go everywhere together (see the trip to Madrid on the plane ? Lovren to Mo, "where shall WE sit".

Worth keeping him at #4 just to keep Mo happy !

Yeah strange one. Not sure we need him. Not to mention the fact that he's muck.

Maybe we think he's one of them 'too good to lose' players, that we just have to make a move on, similar to Mbappe. I haven't seen enough of him to know he is that, but if it ends up with Lovren departing then I could understand it. Our defense would be cemented for years and years.

He is very young isn't he .. 19 or 20 ? And he does score a lot for a CB ! Not sure why he'd come here if not guaranteed a starting birth though. That may be keenly felt by Gomez (who I love for his pace at CB) and Matip (who has been a revelation the 2nd half of the season).

I think there are a couple of other Ajax players we should be moving on before De Ligt.

Hakim Ziyech
Noussair Mazraoui
David Neres
Van der Beek

in that order.

Apparently they have a striker named Casper Dolberg too but I've never heard of him so no idea if he's any good.

Gomez is a class act but can never stay fit long. This guy would be a good signing given his age, the worry is rinola and his wage demands

Could be very interesting, freeing up Robbo and TAA even more, and we know how much our play relies on them.
And with Fabinho above them we'd be very solid.
Only problem is we'd have to drop one of the midfield trio as Salah, Mane and Firmino will not be dropped surely.

There would be less need for Bobby, you'd think, in a 3-5-2. could free up attacking midfielder like Ox and Keita a system like that, actually.

Yeah, don't mess with the formation.

I can't see us after another CB unless Lovren or Matip is leaving.

No– but having a variety of formations at your disposal is no bad thing.

Nah. Dont like it. It's better to specialize in a formation brushing the rest of the park than always be able to whine about why We didn't choose this or that.... like restaurants with 103 courses on the menu is normally just average on each menu.

It all depends though. If you have one of your front 3 injured, for instance, are you best putting a square peg in a round hole, or change formation so you have players still playing their natural game? I think having formation changes up your sleeve is a good thing.

I'm starting to see how getting a young CB is of importance. We need some natural progression in our squad. We have a bunch of players occupying the same position that are basically the same age. The CB position is one, wing forward/striker is another. All of them are around 27-28 years old.
We need to sign a few more players who can be seen as their future successors.
But Ajax are going to be asking for stupid amounts of cash for De Ligt.
