I think we all guessed this ....

'Yossi is doing well,' noted Wilkins. 'He has said the pre-season training here is so different to what they did at Liverpool where they didn't use a ball. They ran and they ran and they ran. But here we use the ball all the time and we feel we get the best out of the guys by using the ball day in day out. I think Yossi is quite enjoying himself.'

I'm not sure why this is even afforded space here. Yossi can do whatever he wants with the Chavs, its really of no concern to us.

I stopped caring when he left our club! Break a leg!

I think that is a fucking awful thing to say.
It is of concern to me, as to what our training techniques were and gives an insight as to why we were so shite.

We may have all guessed at that (see our "football" last season) but still shocking to think that might be true.

I don't understand how someone who "loves" football (as Rafa professes) can promote training methods that take the soul out of it.

Well, train as you mean to play, I suppose...

no ball but plenty of electric cattle prods and hoods

To be fair that's what most of them deserved last season.

My guess is that Rafa loves football the way a nerd loves trains because of their serial numbers rather than because of the travelling they enable, or some twitchers love birds because they can tick their names off on a list rather than because they look beautiful. It's genuine love, but a very lop-sided version of it.

Who gives a rats ass about what Yossi thinks about former training regime?!

He'll have plenty of time to think about that when he's on their bench this season anyway..

Already asked and answered. It's not Yossi's views that are important, it's what they reveal about what went on under Rafa. If anyone deserves criticism for this, it's that mischief-making prat Wilkins (the most overrated footballer I ever clapped eyes on in his playing days).

On the other hand, we played some wonderful stuff the season before last.

I'm reading it as just another way to have a kick at us. Ahhh we pass the ball in training look at us Chavs down south. Liverpool only run and run...

Pffht!! I agree that last season was a wright off, but the year before we hammered them and most of the league aswell. We did something right.

"Hmmmm......errrrrrr.....ok, I give in, pass me the cue then."

Buddha, Hansern - true, but we only played like that consistently towards the back end of the season, after beating Real at their place. Despite one or two ace performances earlier in the season, Rafa didn't really slip the players' collective leash until then.

For me that season encapsulated the tragedy of Rafa's time at LFC. He COULD send out a team to play sparkling football when he wanted to, but just didn't want to often enough. His control freakery wouldn't let him.

Under Benitez, the players often looked like they hadn't seen a ball since the last match.

all well and good but the tail end of season before last liverpool were playing the best football in the country, so the training methods can't be 'that' bad.

Imagine looking at Momo Sissoko and deciding "this guy doesn't need to train with a ball".

Is it any wonder he'd kick the ball all over the fucking shop or straight up into the air, he was like "whaaaaaaarrrrrrrggggghhhhhhh what the fuck is this?!?!? Get it off me!!!!! get it off me!!"

Also, Dirk looked like he had a much better touch when he arrived than he does playing for us now.

It suits us at the moment to look down on Rafa and all that he achieved here because we want to feel better about the decision to sack him and want to feel some hope for the future. Then in a few years time when we bored of Roy and see all of his flaws, we'll look back on Rafa with more fondness and Roy's methods will be made fun of.

What insight comes out from what Yossi has said to the newspapers or what he's told Wilkin's, says more about Yossi than Rafa. Rafa's achieved something here as our manager and is a part of our history whilst Yossi did nothing of any real note when it really comes down to it.

X2.

Anybody who assumes that just being really comfortable with the ball, passing, shooting, anticipating, winning it back, controlling it and all that is all there is to being a professional footballer is clearly mental. No wonder they try that stupid experimental stuff at the current league champions, but I hope woy doesn't go down this road and concentrates ontraditional training methods, triple jumping, five card brag, grappling, etc.

I just can't imagine any sane football manager would train his team without the use of a ball. It's too thick to even contemplate - never mind suggesting it's true!

I dont care what anyone says footballers not training with an actual football is retarded.

So is that what went wrong last year?

Benitez decided to train without a ball and just run about?
[/quote]

eh, fair point. It has been mentioned before though (by thicko Babel) and would explain why we spend at least some portions of every season not being able to put two passes together.

Yup, hopefully we'll start to get a bit more free-flowing again.
