He lives in Spain, and said the papers there are full of quotes from Torres talking about the need to buy more players (which we know already); that he would prefer to stay in England if he does move to another club; and that he would have no problem playing for Manchester United!

I came up here expecting to see the forum in meltdown, but it's not. So... is my dad having me on? Anyone know anything about this?

i'd be shocked if he said that about the mancs.

the rest was posted here yesterday - several times.

I think I've found what he's referring to: a paragraph in the Sunday Times' reporting of the 'four or five players' story:

Torres, inset, who joined from Atletico Madrid in 2007 and accepted improved terms last May to a contract that runs until 2013, suggested Liverpool will not be his last employer. “I don’t know how many clubs I will play for over the years,†he told Spanish newspaper AS. He hoped to remain part of an ambitious Liverpool and dismissed the idea of returning to Spanish football, with Barcelona or Real Madrid, in the summer. “I don’t plan on going back to La Liga for a while. I have made my move away from home and I owe Liverpool a lot. I like it here, and people have treated me like one of their own.â€

Asked if the rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester United would prevent him going to Old Trafford, just as his Atletico roots would seem to preclude joining Real Madrid, Torres said the two situations could not be compared. Had he thought about leaving Liverpool? “It’s too early to talk about that,†he said.

No direct quote there, but a bit unsettling all the same. Anyone read Spanish so they can check the original in AS?

The Spanish press have just done exactly what ours do with interviews with foreign papers, taken the quotes, expanded on them & then made shit up in the same article to give it more impact.

Yeah, they've asked questions and got answers. Our press has then moved them all about to make it look far worse than it really was.

He loves Liverpool, he wants them to return to winning ways, he feels like he is at home ther etc. but the line about being too early too talk about it' was not is response to a move to Utd. I've just had my Mrs read me the article in AS.

This is 'Frengly's' version not hers.

AS:Should not qualify for the Champions, has arisen leave Liverpool?.

It is early to speak honestly think we're going to be 4th, but not so important for me the Champions League qualifiers. What is important is that the club will make an effort and bring important players, which exceed the quality of the workforce. We need four or five top players to compete, the better of us here to make us all grit our teeth and try to keep our position. Without reinforcements does it get the 4th and fight again next year because 4th. I want to fight next year to win the Premier, by winning the Champions League or UEFA, but that must come signings. There are so many circumstances and so many things you have to give it too early to talk about it. But I have this and three more years of contract.

AS: Has been identified with Liverpool as well as with Atletico. "The choice of Manchester United is impossible, as was that of Madrid?

No, but I've left my home and it is clear that Liverpool owe much, and I'm very happy here, people treated me as if he were here, but I'll think about my future and hopefully will be here I think these people deserve to win. Above me think, I think the club deserves to win again, but they themselves know that right now are far away. Fans are worried that the players go, that's a problem when you start to be afraid that your players go is because you know that the club going forward, but I believe this is not going to be the dynamic it will follow the club. Since he arrived Liverpool Christian Purslow has hit an important boost, we signed a lot of money to sponsor Real Madrid match, then things will go forward.

AS: What Benitez sees him out of Liverpool?
Not know, he is under contract as well. A decision will need to take if it is ever raised.

Torres will never play for Utd, City or Chelsea. That I'm 100% sure of.

So, a nothing article, like always, that is copy and pasted to make things look worse for us than they are.

So he doesn't answer the United question at all?

If he really joins manscum, I wont be surprised, don't think he cares about our rivalry with manscum.

Yep. That why when he scored the equaliser against them at OT last year, he made a gesture to their fans showing how many European Cups we'd won.

Of course he doesn't understand....

Im sure he would be on their list, if they had £70m to spend. They dont so it wont happen. The only teams that could afford him are Madrid (never gonna happen) Inter City or Chelsea

Im not as complacent as some people about Torres staying, he really does seem to be completely fed up at the moment and Im sure he will have aserious think about his future if we dont get 4th

That disillusionment has to be balanced against his genuine and strong love for LFC though. I'd bet a sizeable sum that Nando's not going to go to ManUre - I don't believe he'd be willing to do that to us. Inter probably can't afford him either BTW. A move to Citeh or the Chavs might just happen if he really feels cornered by the situation here, but it's still far from likely.

He will leave if he feels we are not going to be able to compete.

Even then lets hope he will be happy to spend a year outside of the Champions League.

No 4th spot and no investment in the side and he will be off in the summer but who could blame him really.

City will outbid anyone for him.

Worst case scenario is City getting 4th spot and being able to offer CL football, a side thats going to challenge for the title next year, and a wage packet that will probably be record breaking..

if rhone invested that 100m and man city bought torres for 100m we'd be right back to square 1 when moores sold us. 40m in debt, no stadium, thread bare squad.

No, we wouldn't. We'd be able to attract the kind of investment Moores himself admitted he couldn't bring in, and - while Heaven knows I don't want him going anywhere (and don't actually think he will) - the Torres money could be spent on top players who could make us a better squad overall, like when Rushy went to Juve.

I think the money from a torres sale would be swallowed up by the debt rather than filtering down to the squad.

Nope. That wasn't the full article, but I couldn't find any other references to them elsewehere.

If we sold him tomorrow, yes, but not if these guys buy into the club. Their initial 100 mill.would go towards the debt, but they'd know full well that at least the bulk of the Torres money would have to go on players to protect their investment and make it grow.

He won't sign for Salford.

Ha ha ha, keep saying it mate.

truth is torres can go where he chooses as long the buying club matches our valuation, but you'd hope if he does leave it will be back to spain.

We haven't got a valuation and never have considered the possibility.

I'm not saying it'd never happen, but I don't think we'd sell him to another English club, and I don't think he'd join one either.

Both for lots of reasons.
