How Will People Feel About Winning the Europa League?

Status
Not open for further replies.
I can't believe some of the shite that is being spouted about the UEFA cup.
It may not have the kudos of the CL, it may not bring the same financial rewards, but that cup has been great for us over the years, I would be made up if we won it, I would be made up if we won any trophy.

The sad thing is I don't think we will win the UEFA cup (yes I know what it's been re-labeled), I don't think we will win anything, and the way we are going we had better get used to the UEFA cup as at the moment that is our current level.

We weren't unlucky to get dumped out of the CL, it's what we deserved. Our right to compete at that level has been compromised and anyone who can't see that needs some help. We are in reality no better than a mid-table side and our current for is nearer relegation fodder, it's a fucking shocking state of affairs.

Given that we haven't won anything since 2006, I'd love to win the 'Europa League'.

Maybe some of you are happy to go year in, year out winning nothing and declaring competitions to be beneath us - I enjoy finals however and winning any competition for me is exciting.

Round of 32
The group winners, along with the four better third-placed teams from the Champions League group stage, will be drawn against the group runners-up and the other four third-placed Champions League teams. In this round, teams from the same group, nor teams from the same association, may not be drawn with each other. Group winners and the four better third-placed teams from the Champions League group stage play the second leg at home.

and just read (hope i'm wrong) you get £2.65m for winning it..

Answering the original question of the post. Stevie G wants it, and I agree with the captain.

£2.65, but if you get that far you get another £1m for getting through to the last 16 and last 8 . Plus presumably the shares of the gate money up to the final.

I agree, except that I'd say that, while we were not unlucky to go out, we were unlucky to have the team weakened by so many injuries. The idea our strongest team was put out every game and just under-performed is wildly unfair. It's quite right that on most occasions injuries are used as excuses by clubs and fans, but it's also perverse to refuse to acknowledge when injuries really are a major problem. Rabid dogmatists with long-term agendas will be outraged by that fact, but it's a fact all the same.

As for the competition, well, that's life. You either get on with it and stop whining or top yourself. Moaning about why Thursdays or Sundays aren't quite convenient is the sort of thing that makes millions of ordinary fans so peed off with fans of the big clubs. It's either your team or it isn't. It doesn't fit into your life, you fit into its. So either find a life accessory more suitable or get back behind the team.

It's also worth pointing out that the level of our group wasn't really that far off the Europa League at all.

Debrecen are fucking dreadful, whilst Lyon and Fiorentina are certainly no better than the likes of Valencia, Roma and Benfica who find themselves in the shittier competition.

Getting to the final could actually be very difficult depending on the draw.

It always used to be the case that some of the really in-form teams of the season were in the UEFA Cup - when we last won it I think that was indeed the case (Barca, Porto, Roma, etc) - so, even though this year's batch doesn't look as strong, I doubt it'll be any easier or less risk-aversive than trying to win the FA Cup. But it's there and we need to do it.

I don't think we're good enough to win it, nor have the luxury of placing much emphasis on the trophy.

Qualification for next years Champions League and a good FA Cup run is what I want to see.

My main contention Macca is that we never had any contingency for Torres no being around , and that single aspect is what is causing us more problems than any other factor, we can't score goals without him.
We can muddle through an injury crisis in other areas, but we have put all our eggs in one basket up front, and that is almost criminal.
I said right at the start if we had to rely on two from Dirk, N'gog, Babel and Voronin, we would be fucked. We are now resorting to one up front with N'gog.

Yes, obviously, I agree, but I really don't think Benitez sat down in June and thought, 'We'll be fine with no decent back up for Torres'. I honestly don't believe that. He's not an idiot. But even without Torres, but with an otherwise first choice XI, I think we would have gone through.

I think you're overstating the striker issue, Vlad. While I would have liked a back up for Torres bought in this summer, a lack of goals isn't what's costing us now, and it's worth pointing out N'gog's been performing incredibly well for youngster in a new league. Had we gone and signed someone who had delivered N'gog's goal return/match starts you would have been content.

The deeper problems lie in the defence and an uncreative midfield.

We need a run of clean sheets and to cross our fingers that Aquilani will firstly soon be ready, and secondly that he'll slot right into the side and begin making a difference.

I AM NOT OVERSTATING THE STRIKER ISSUE - IT'S BEEN OBVIOUS FOR FUCKING AGES.

Even when we brought Keane we were still short, a club like ours should have three top class strikers available. We have one and have had onefor nearly a year now and it's biting us in the fucking arse arse.

I make no apologies for using this worrying information I came by earlier and used in another thread

"Taking the last six league games (about half the season so far), it puts us in the relegation zone. Level on points with Wigan (5), and with just Bolton and Wolves below us (4 and 3 respectively). Ha, if United had beaten us we would be bottom.
We scored 8 goals in the last six premier games, and in the six before that we scored 21.
How long has Torres been missing? We have conceded 12 goals in our last 6, and 8 goals in the six before that. Spot the pattern?"

We are in relegation form because we have NO ONE up front capable of scoring.
Yes, the defence is leaking more than it did early on, but at a much lower ratio to us scoring less.
The difference between the first six and the last six.............. Torres was fit.

I said we were dicing with death last year after Keane went without a replacement and that we were lucky to be in the position we were given our striker position, everyone said it was nothing to do with luck......Here is the wake up call, yes it fucking was, soft old cunt Vlad was right again, and now our luck has deserted us we are in the position I knew we would be.

One thing that would improve the defence overnight would be dropping Rafa's fucking mental zonal marking idea, everyone has known that for yonks, us the players everyone, oh and get men on the post too we would not have conceded the first goal on Saturday if we did.

What kind of fucking cabbage would prefer to win the Carling Cup to the UEFA cup?

And as for 'concentrating on coming fourth'

Wooooo! Fucking celebrate!

We're Liverpool fans, not fucking accountants, and winning trophies is what being a fan is all about

Yes, it's the European consolation prize, but it is still a trophy, and if Benitez can't deliver a Top 4 finish and a good fucking run at this too, then he can go and fuck himself and take Lucarse with him

Oncy's right.

I hope that Bayern, Madrid, Inter and Barca all make it through the group stage of the CL now.

And we'll ALL have to worry about the money if it's not there anymore and we have to sell Torres, won't we..?

Sorry lads - The undeniable but short lived enjoyment of being crowned Europe's best also-rans Vs the huge financial boost that we have never before needed like we currently do to "stabalize" our future is not even close for me...

Rafa may, before it's all said and done...

I'm quite looking forward to the europa league after getting over the disappointment of being knocked out last night. It will be tough to win but would fucking love us to win it/anything
