I think the idea is to have two goal-scorers, regardless of position.
I agree but we don't have 2 this year.

Torres is at his best when playing up front on his own.

That does not justify having N'gog as back up striker.

It doesn't. We do need a quality back up striker. But there's no way I would rather see Torres playing with a partner than as lone striker.

How many have Kuyt and Gerrard got?
kuyt - 9 league goals
gerrard - 6 league goals

gerrard's injuries and loss of form have hit us hard.

but it does make it harder to recruit a striker if he is worried about how much time he will get on the pitch (with gerrard and torres taking the forward positions), they are worrying over nothing if you ask me given torres' injury record

2

gerrard's return is pretty poor for the position he plays but he has been injuried, a lot.

so if kuyt's got 9 goals then we do, in actual fact, have 2 players on that top scorers list, don't we?

still, not disputing that we need more goalscorers - malouda with 11 stands out as the sort of contribution we could do with from the left, although not sure how often he's played more centrally this season.

United kept Rooney, Ronaldo Berbatov and Tevez content, at least until Tevez went a bit mental. If we had signed a decent striker 2 years ago, he would have played more than Fernando Torres has for us in the same time. Then there is always the possibility of convincing the boss to play 4-4-2.

The probems are/have been Benitez is pretty shit at squad management and he's pissed away money on Keane and Dossena, leaving him with no funds left to work with.

However, financial implications aside, a club of our size should have no problem recruiting a decent standard of striker.

Not according to the thread title

I don't necessarily buy that.
If he played up front with a Tevez or Rooney the team, and I believe Torres would benefit terrifically, it would have been carnage yesterday. It would take loads of pressure off him and he would get less of the kickings that he does now.
If we had another decent striker we would certainly not be in the position we are now.

It would also allow Gerrard to attack from deep, which he did brilliantly yesterday.

Regardless of tactical considerations we need another quality striker simply because Torres is injury prone. Darren Bent would fit the bill if we could afford it.

I still think his best position is a forward and the stats back me up in that regard.
if and when rafa buys a brilliant CF I would keep gerrard there.

Based on? He's always looked ok alongside Villa, the only thing is Torres needs to lead the line.

He couldn't be any worse.

I'm not disagreeing with Torres not being able to play with a fellow striker, of course he could. But there was an obvious improvement in his game when Villa was injured/suspended. Prior to netting the winning goal in the final, it's fair to say he had a pretty average championship.

I haven't seen much of Spain since.

Sad, but true!

We have made a lot of dud signings. We would be challenging for the title if we had just used up the chances wasted on these duds to develop some young player to play that squad role at he very least.
