Henrikh Mkhitaryan - just a smokescreen

I've been trawling through Youtube watching videos of this guy. What exactly am I missing? He seems distinctly average.

Very ordinary touch and no particular display of vision or playmaking.

I understand his qualities are his work rate, running and ability to get into goalscoring positions, but is that worth 20 million? That's effectively a half or third of our transfer budget blown on a player. Is he good enough to be the cornerstone of our attack?

@rurikbird

sounds like frank lampard!

Dmish. He is good enough to be our forward option alongside Sturridge and Borini imo. He is not bad on the ball and with the likes if Coutinho, Gerrard, new AM around him, he'd be a tough customer for any defense.

As you say, not a playmaker, not a no. 8/10 in our setup. If Suarez leaves we'd struggle to find better however imo.

Will be such a bonus having a genuine goalscoring midfielder. Gerrard used to be one, unfortunately as he's got older he's had to adapt his game and be more disciplined.

Cant expect this guy to score 25 goals like he did in the Ukrainian league last season but if he can hit 12-15 it'll make a massive difference.

You people make it sound like he has the ball control of Carroll and the creativity of Lucas...

29 goals from 44 games is pretty impressive for a midfielder.
Average is one of the few things I wouldnt think of when watching him play.
Reading Karlsens thoughts and other football writers opinions the lad can be a great addition to the team.

Armenian and plays for Shaktar, I can see why people arent convinced.

This worries me aswell. He's scored 3 in 17, then 10 in 26, then 25 in 28 since being at Shaktar. But I've no idea if the russian league is all that competitive really.
I just hope we pull the same trick we did with coutinho and sturridge with him and he turns out to be brilliant IF we get him.
I think he looks pretty ordinary from what I've seen on youtube.

Yep my thoughts exactly.

It's worth noting with those stats, he originally played further back, as a DM, but when a player left the season before last, instead of signing a replacement, they moved him forward, hence the increase in goal return.

I watched a couple of youtube clips and I liked him a lot, especially his finishing looks pretty damn good. I also liked his pace and how he seems to time his runs perfectly. Very direct and dynamic and should give us some much needed penetration on the final third.

But then again it's only a couple of clips and I'm nearly always blindly optimistic about our every big signing.

The guy shits goals, don't care about his assist making ability. He takes on defenders head on, something we only see Gerrard and Coutinho do.
Leave the chance creating to Coutinho.

I don't have much to add to what I already wrote about Mkhitaryan. I'll just say that if anyone thinks 20 million will buy you a player with the passing of Pirlo, close control of Silva, and the shooting ability of Gerrard, you'll be disappointed - it doesn't. Mkhitaryan is NOT a playmaker, but he is very much a team player, a fine goalscorer and he has a big bag of tricks. And by the way scoring in the Ukrainian league is VERY HARD, all teams defend with numbers, so the last player with over 20 goals per season was Shevchenko many years ago and he was a centre-forward. Mkhitaryan scored 25, playing in midfield, all from open play.

I think it's a bigger risk to buy a player AFTER their breakthrough season, which is what we seem to be doing in this case. Expectations are higher now (including the player's own expectations of themselves - that can be the biggest problem sometimes), add to that the difficulties of transition to another league - it will not be easy. I believe, however, that Mkhitaryan is smart and even-tempered enough to make it work in the end; he will probably go through a period of adjustment, but if he feels the trust of the manager and the support of the fans, he'll adjust quicker. Here is what I expect if Mkhitaryan moves to Liverpool:

First 6 months:
Shows some flashes of skill, but misses some easy chances created for him by Coutinho and in general looks a bit too timid. Starts around half of the games and has 1 goal and 2 assists to show for it. "He doesn't score, doesn't tackle - all he's good for is running about" is the fans' verdict.
2nd half of the season:
Scores several important/game winning goals and starts playing with more confidence. The defensive side of his game improves. Possibly misses some time through injury. Fans start noticing that whenever he is not playing, we have noticeably less cutting edge in the team. Final season tally: 7 goals, 4 assists.

2nd year and onwards:
First team player and scores 15+ goals in every season under Rodgers.

I think of him as Glen who Gene made that joke about ie:Glen that said exactly the same as Mors that day, the same day others thought of him as Glen Close and Glen Campbell.

Meanwhile in Ukraine.....

Hoverla Uzhhorod's Volodymyr Lysenko was sent off for headbutting teammate Mirko Raicevic in a Ukrainian match last week. Raicevic ran over to Lysenko and apparently said something that Lysenko didn't appreciate. The pair bumped chests and then Lysenko delivered the headbutt, sending Raicevic to his knees as he clutched his face.

And since all of this happened right in front of the referee, Lysenko was quickly shown a red card and escorted off the pitch. The good news? Lysenko is only on loan at Hoverla from Metalist. Surely "headbutting his teammates" is some kind of violation of the agreement that could get him sent back early if necessary. Maybe.

The look on the manager's face is priceless

That youtube vid is the shitz. H looks 3x the player Luis Alberto is.

He always does just enough to get his team a goal. Which is the sign of a player who knows what this game is about.

Superb timing / decisions on some of the runs there. No nonsense shooting too.
