Gravenberch

Sturridge
I had him on my mind, but he actually had a good season at Chelsea. The reason they sold him was because of Drogba.
We just played him up front where he belonged.
You could argue that he improved, although he did spend a lot of time on the sidelines due to injuries.

I have watched like 2 minutes of gravenberch, and my main takeaway is that Curtis Jones will probably get sold next year. I don't totally get how the two of them fit, and they seem right in the same stage of development and both very desirous of game time.

Can he play vs Villa?

I think there is a chance - medical, contract and media duties on Friday, first training with the team on Saturday, in the squad Sunday.

I want to see this triangle in midfield as soon as possible:
—————————Szoboszlai
—Gravenberch———————
——-———MacAllister———

LCM is a position Gakpo played in the first 2 games alongside MacAllister at #6 - surely no matter what potential defensive issues Gravenberch might have that need to be ironed out, he is a much more natural fit in this position and should provide more solidity due to his large frame and long legs. Endo can come in when we need to shore things up and Jones or Elliott for more attacking impetus.

Yeah I would expect to see this team against the lower sides in the league. I think with the Trent hybrid thing you get an incredibly fluid transition where you see Macca and Trent able to ping the ball anywhere, and two seriously athletic and capable runners in Szobo and Gravenberch so we can move up and down the pitch incredibly fast. Should improve our countering a lot, but hopefully also mean our play becomes a lot slicker and harder to keep the low block against whenever a team tries to break against us

Not necessarily just lower-league sides IMHO. If everyone pulls their weight defensively, including Gravenberch, and the team as a whole plays in a more energetic high-press style reminiscent of the early Klopp years, not many teams will be able to play through us. We won plenty of important games in the past with Milner, Hendo or Gini at #6, none of whom were a natural DM.

Yeah I would hope we can get to that point - after all some of our greatest games we had no classical 6 when Fabinho wasn't there - the classic Brexit midfield won us a lot and this can be a far less agricultural new midfield. Exciting

Yeah, maybe it’s just the excitement of the new season, but now I am much more bullish on finding a stable defensive system without necessarily having a world-class specialist #6 in the team than I was just a few weeks ago. The last 2 games reminded me that defensive excellence does not necessarily come from one player, some kind of “defensive superman” mopping up in behind a bunch of free-spirited attackers but instead every bit of athleticism, speed, tactical awareness and work-rate you add into the mix - even in more forward positions - makes the whole structure more secure. It’s great to have a defensive specialist like Endo, but if everything goes according to plan I don’t think we will need to depend on him to hold everything together in every game.

Yes, but Fabinho came to an already highly functioning, well-balanced team. We’re going to build a proper structure this season and hopefully take it to a new level with a new system-defining #6.
Yeah that's how I'm seeing it too - I think it's clever in the circumstances. Go for the right players but we didn't refuse to add a player like Endo which is also at least not totally stubborn
