Gotze

So next year:

Coutinho-Firmino-Goetze

Not bad ... not bad at all.
We need to add some pace there. Sturridge has lost his explosiveness, which leaves Origi as the only player with genuine pace in the side.

We need to add a jet-heeled wing forward.

I Konoplyanka still alive?
If not, get Markovic.
We'll be facing him in three days.

Markovic was supposed to be that player. But I doubt he has a future here.

We're definitely targeting a pacy wide-forward - the Teixeira and Dembele links show it. I wonder who we'll end up with.

You could put together a mid table team made exclusively from Sakhos, Dembeles, and Teixeiras.

Add the Suarezes and you'd be in the champions league places.

We can't just give up on a 20 million signing like Markovic that easy.

I know there is a load of money in the league now, but it is ridiculous.
And then there is Benteke...

I agree, we can't just give up on Markovic.

One important aspect we're forgetting here is that many of the potential signings we're making could be depending on us making the CL, especially Götze.

If we do win the final, we need to have a squad good enough to compete in both the CL and the League.
Players like Markovic and Lallana etc will be needed.
The sad part is where the likes of Ojo, Ibe, Stewart etc will fit in this equation.

So how is he a white sterling when sterling is nothing like that at all?

You mean Gotze is not white? 🙂

Seriously though, Sterling is less prolific as a scorer so far (his top result was 11 in all competitions for 2 years running before he left for City), but I think in other ways it's a pretty useful comparison. Obviously no two players are alike and I'm not saying their style is exactly the same. Gotze and Sterling are similar in that both are not blessed with great pace over long distance, but their main weapon is great acceleration and close control – which means both of them like to run at the defenders and dare them to commit or force them to keep backing off. They both have low center of gravity, which allows them to ride challenges (Gotze even more so, as he is actually taller, but it doesn't look that way when he plays). Also both are nominal wingers who have been at times used in the "false 9" position by their managers.

Finally on non-football side, both earned the hatred of their former fans by leaving the club that developed them as players for a richer rival team at the very first opportunity (which in hindsight was a wrong move for both their careers). And starting from next season both will have been coached by Guardiola. The only thing left would be for Sterling to score the winning goal for England at the World Cup in two years 🙂

Please please please don't let this turn into one of those cases where everything is in line for us to sign the player but for some strange reason we screw it all up at the last minute.....

I will readily admit to not watching must of Gotze, but hge doesn't strike me as a player who will transform anything. He's slightly better than some of our other options, and plays in a position in which we have more players than we know what to do with already.

We need some genuine width, goal threat and scary pace injecting into the attack.

Name some names within realistic a fee ie under £40m

For 20-25M he definitely worth it.

I don't think he will end up at Dortmund - majority of fans don't seem to want him back, bridge has been burnt it seems.

Also, I don't think Dortmund actually need him ... Reus, Kagawa & Mkhitarayan have been brilliant this season (especially Mkhitarayan).

For me the only way he was going to end back at Dortmund was through the Hummels deal - but that didn't eventuate, and I can't really see Dortmund offering 20-25m to sign a player in an area they don't need strengthening.

I'm betting England is his next destination and for 20-25m I really do hope it is us who sign him.

Probably not the position we should be prioritising but a big name signing is always welcome and good for the mood.

That's pretty impossible to know, in fairness - firstly given we have a top manager who knows whether we'd be able to attract brilliant players despite our league position, and we still don't know whether we'll be in European competition.

I haven't watched Gotze since he moved to Bayern but he was brilliant for Dortmund and I think he would bring something our current attacking midfielders don't have, apart from possibly Firmino - runs behind the defence, directness and goals.

Surprised at the lack of excitement concerning Gotze signing. I do agree with the points Brendan made above. We are well stocked in the roaming attacking midfielder department but if Gotze settles in the premier league, he represents a level of talent above and beyond what we have with the exception of maybe Coutinho. He hit 15 plus goals and 15 plus assists in his breakout season at Dortmund and first season at Munich. He is still developing and has the potential to score 20 goals and land a similar number of assists. He is highly productive and we are competing against the likes of Juve for his signing.

I think it is more of an opportunistic buy as in the future we are most likely not be able to attract a talent of his level at 20-25 million euros price bracket. More like buying Mascherano when we were well stocked in the central midfield department.

He does add the goal threat but I do agree that we need genuine width and scary pace option also.

Convince Goetze to join Liverpool? If anyone Can, Emre Can.

Liverpool's Emre Can hopes Mario Gotze makes Anfield switch

Emre Can hopes Bayern Munich midfielder Mario Gotze will join him at Liverpool this summer.
Gotze, who has discussed his future with incoming Bayern coach Carlo Ancelotti, is approaching the final year of his Bayern deal and is expected to leave the Allianz Arena this summer.
Borussia Dortmund have said they are open to re-signing the 23-year-old despite opposition from fans and Juventus are also reported to be interested, but Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool appear to be the frontrunners.
Roberto Firmino, who joined Liverpool from Hoffenheim last summer, said this week he would welcome Gotze at Anfield, and Can is also hoping to see his fellow Germany international make the switch.
"I'd be very happy if Mario were to decide in favour of Liverpool," Can told Sport Bild. "Everyone knows what a great footballer he is and what qualities he has. He obviously lacked a bit of confidence at Bayern recently, but that's just normal when you are not winning game time."
Klopp established Gotze as a star at Dortmund and has remained in contact since, and Can said: "The step to Liverpool would be a good one for Mario. Jurgen Klopp has shown this season that he puts a lot of trust in young players."
Can, 22, came through the Bayern youth ranks but left for Bayer Leverkusen in 2013 in search of first-team football before making the move to Anfield a year later.
"You can only advise young players to make the step to Liverpool," he added.
