Good article. The change in football since the '70s

Nice article.

Safe standing is something I do think would help change things, but I understand why there's opposition to it, not least from our own club.

However I think the fact that we have fought for years to show it was the bad & unlawful, panicked decisions, of the police that day which caused the disaster proves that standing itself at a football match isn't the issue, but the safety procedures around it & who is placed in charged of it.

Nice piece. I'm impressed he had an actual kids' LFC kit in those days!

Impressive isn't it. The kit I mean. The piece is pretty good too. I have a 174 Cup final tea towel, a Liverpool Echo Champions of Europe T-shirt that my old man and I queued up for outside the Echo offices in the summer of '77 and a child's '79 Hitachi home shirt, but a full kit in '76? Very cool.

...this very much including the FA, whose insistence on putting the game on at Hillsborough, in the teeth of the warnings which followed a near miss the previous year, started the whole fatal chain of events.

Can we not turn this into a Hillsborough thread please. I've been on the phone and email with Sheila Coleman and the head of the solicitors about the new inquests and a civil case against the police all day. Came on here for some respite!

Fair enough!

I'm assuming kids kits were hard to come by back then? When I got kits on the 80s kids kits were commonplace, all sold in presentation boxes.

I have a 174 Cup final tea towel,

I used to call on an old couple in Kensington, the fella was an Evertonian. One week I was around there and there was a report in the Echo that Everton were sniffing round Norman Whiteside. The old man said "If we sign that idiot, I'll throw out my Everton tea towel in protest".

I had to hold it in for 10 minutes until I left & then laughed all the way home
