Gomez

You got the "like" before I even saw the video. Gomez was immense. He really looked like the guy from last season. I just love his pace. Saved us and him plenty of times.

My preferred pairing. Gomez has the tendency to doze off at times which he needs to eliminate and stay alert. He can't go ball watching in matches. Last season before the injury he was extremely focus on task at hand and if he can get back to that level, stay fit, we are going to be fucking difficult to breach with pace.

Yep agree, he gets caught out of position too much but really good yesterday and getting better.

I’m delighted, been like a dog with bone wanting him back in the side along Virgil. His pace is simply something none of other options have.

Even the way he breaks the line and comes forward with the ball rivals Matip. Such a useful asset to have in games.

I fully expect him to be first choice barring injury.

Doesn't pass as well as Matip once he breaks forward though imo.

His passing has improved. The area in which he struggles is against more physical strikers and getting dominanted.
But that could change as he bulks up a bit more and gets more experienced.

Still feel the Matip of 2019 is Virgils best partner.

Yeah I agree. Matip and Van Dijk were best

I think Glenn Murrary figured out the hard way this year bullying Gomez isn't going to work much anymore.

Yeah, his pace means that when on song he's a really amazing option to have- especially if you play as high a line as we do. And he's now definitely on song.

He really was great yesterday, which is reassuring as he's not had the best of seasons. It's the one thing that undermines his ability, the fact that his confidence seems quite brittle at times and then effects his form. If he could stay fit for the long term then the ideal partnership is the current one, despite how brilliant Matip has been over the last season or two.

It's easy to forget he's still only 22. We often talk about how difficult it is for young CB's to look good at this level, but Joe's been doing it for years already.

He's going to be even better. These are exciting times indeed.

He’s had a difficult year as well with all the England stuff. Easy to forget how young he is, but great to see him hit some form again.
He was excellent last night.

Gomez is the perfect type of defender to partner Van Dijk when playing a high line. Better than Matip in that regard.

Agree with almost all of the above: get's caught out of position sometimes; passing can be variable in quality; has almost hilarious problems reading lofted balls over his head.

But when he needs that burst of acceleration, it's like watching a Rolls Royce in red, gliding at top speed across the ground. Glorious.

He's got the potential to be a world class CB. As a full back, he's crap.

Against a Vardy in form, and the quick players of United and Spurs to come, he's theoretically the ideal partner for Van Dijk.

Against Sterling in full on scratchy hissy fit?

I know Joe picks him and and puts him in his place 😉

After about 30 mins he made trent look like a slouch when he got him out of trouble. He really does take a long time to play himself into form, but he was excellent yesterday.

Hes such a fantastic young player, hes had problems with injuries but hes about to hit his peak years and hopefully can have a settled run in the team.
