He was wank.

So wank, he was part of one of the sternest defenses around. He was a kid. He wasn't great going forward but he held his own in the back line. He was never a brilliant rampaging attacking fullback, we all know that, but he could defend well.

You really don't do yourself any favours with these over the top comments, especially against club legends. Unless players are flash in every position, despite how good they may be at their primary role, you can't help but fail to see past any shortcomings technically. He was a brilliant defender, I know you are quick to highlight his mistakes, but you seem to completely overlook that most centre halves do make some mistakes, it's the nature of their position.

Johnson gets a by from you and others, because he's (apparently) brilliant going forward, you seem keen to defend him, in a round about way, by pointing out the flaws of more defensive fullbacks. It's a stupid argument, slating a defensive fullback for being better at defending than attacking. Whatever the modern game apparently requires, it's a daft point to be making when we've shipped goals for the past 5 years since "the great attacking fullback" came into the side.

Yeah, or Finnan. I'd take either one of them any day.

What great fullbacks they were. They were all you need your fullbacks to be: solid defensively, consistent, unspectacular, supplemented the attacks well going forward.

And we sold Arbeloa for peanuts and bought Johnson. That was straight after our 2nd place of 2009. What we really needed was a quality wide attacker to support Gerrard and Torres.

Don't rise to it. Modo is just a sad dipshit who clearly knows nothing about football and everything about servicing his weird little ego. Those of us who had season tickets throughout that season knew his worth, and enjoyed seeing him help us to win those trophies.

I stand corrected. Although I'm sure he played at RB a bit too.

He went on to play RB but 2000-2001 he was first choice left back. We bought Riise in the summer of 2001. He made his debut at LB in the Super Cup final. Babbel got that horrible illness and Carra moved to RB.

I always wished Heggem had stayed fit. He could have been a legend. Ace RB.

Ah that's it. I knew I wasn't dreaming.

you would think at his age and with his experience, Johnson would be able to position himself better ( a la Carra did ) to not get caught out by little passes inside him, or having wingers ghost straight past him like he had divers boot on, but no,he hasn't. only conclusion is he has become extremely poor at his PRIMARY job, that of defending.

That i
Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but that is just an agenda. He was solid and dependable at left back. For a right footed centre half, you couldn't expect much more.
I just love to mess with people here. People are so fucking sensitive when it comes to certain players. In this case Carra.
He wasn't wank. He was very limited going forward but did his job defensively.
Don't forget that we tried to replace Carra with Ziege, Vignal, Riise etc.
Never really worked out.

Also true.

Part of me wishes we'd have him round for the newcomers to learn from, he must still be able to show them a few things in training, but then I think of his wages & the fact he's never seemed the 'teacher' type, make me think that maybe following this model is more right than wrong.

Utd have always got shot of players before a certain age pretty ruthlessly as soon as their performance dipped & it's served them well in getting big fees for soon to be over the hill players.

Yep. I missed having unspectacular, but solid (defensively and offensively) full-backs in our team since the moment Arbeloa was sold. Don't mean put all the blame on Johnson for this, but this was the moment our previously solid defensive core hopelessly disintegrated. I love attacking fullbacks (Roberto Carlos is one of my favorite players of all time and Cafu also comes close), but I think most great teams have only one – and a solid hard worker on the other side. Rafa has royally messed up our FB situation with his later-period transfers (Dossena, Degen, Insua, permanently injured Aurelio and Glenjo to some extent) and now it's up to Rodgers to reintroduce some order and solidity.
