That last paragraph is key.

Sadly it's the reason I can't get too excited about genuine title chances.

We play this well with all our quality players in the side.

Take one or two out & the replacements aren't good enough to keep us playing the same way.

If we can keep this up to January & maybe get in one or two players who can genuinely replace that work rate & one touch passing, or if some of the reserves or kids can do a good enough job (Origi is arguably a good bet to replace mane if needs be) then things look brighter.

I get what you're saying but wouldn't every fan of every team challenging at the top or the League be thinking 'things are looking good but what if x y and z get injured' ?

Take De Bruyne and Aguero out of City and they wouldn't be the same.
Ozil and Sanchez at Arsenal. Hazard and Costa at Chelsea.

What a super thread. Full of quality discussion, acknowledgement of our problems as a team, and also areas where we can be very optimistic.

People are enritled to their opinion on Firmino. But last two games he has been incredible important. That assist against a Pulis team were we risked a busparking was pure class. And then he following up at Selhurst park by sprinting in between defenders and chipping in the matchkilling goal like he was Ian Rush i just impressive.... Thats the difference on this Liverpool team and the one we have seen for a few seasons.

I don't really get the whole bit about our style of play not allowing for players to get in behind the opposition and exercise their pace.

One of the key facets of our game - as commentators like to point out quite often - is our ability to break quickly. The pressing game helps us catch the opponents off guard, the technical quality of our players is key in transitioning quickly and pace obviously helps.

We saw loads of instances of it against Crystal Palace.

Lots and lots of examples. Not just Palace but in pretty much every game bar United & Burnley. We ripped Spurs apart many times (with their first choice back four) and really should have won that game.

Yup. Apparently you have to be Owen, Rush or Torres to be recognized as getting behind a defense. Any player slower than them getting through on goal doesn't count. Really weird.

I agree. However, when Mane had his shit hot start to the season I assume opponent managers were more aware off his pace as the main threat from Liverpool. Hence they try to avoid giving him space. For Coutinho and Firmino it is obviously not the pace that is the main threat.

But if they want to close down the space behind their left back it means they will not let him overlap and go forward which allow Clyne opening to charge forward. Same they need to close down Coutinho by sticking someone close to him. With Firmino, Milner, Can and Lallana moving in and out between their backline they will be pushed back either they like it or not.

I don't completely agree there isn't space to exploit in Klopp's system. Mane and Firmino both found themselves in one on ones at the weekend and I don't believe Klopp would have signed Mane if pace wasn't an asset in his system. I do agree that I miss a top, top striker banging goals in for fun. It was like having the best card in top trumps. You may not win the match, but it still felt pretty damn good having the best player in the league running amok. One of my favourite scenes in football is seeing a defensive collectively shit themselves as one player picks up the ball (Suarez - United), or the look of 'WTF' on a goalkeepers face as the ball flies past him from nowhere (Torres - Blackburn). It's a small grievance though, and pales into irrelevance when we keep on winning.

For me Klopp's style in pretty complex. Yes we have the fundamental principles of working hard, pressing high up, moving the ball quickly and so forth. But he's all about creating or forcing 'moments'. Opportunities whereby if you do exactly the right play, at the right speed, you will likely score. Those moments can be forced anywhere on the pitch and dictates what type of chance you can create. It shouldn't rule out anyone, providing you work hard and have technical skill, and therefore shouldn't rule out Daniel Sturridge. More needs to be done to successfully integrate him into this team. There will be a time when our play is not so free flowing and our chances will seize up. That's where you need a player who can either create something magic or finish that one difficult chance in a match to steal three points.

I suspect a title winning Liverpool side will need Daniel Sturridge at least in contention to start.

Right now he seems a B team player and that doesn't sit well.

Wow. A comparison of Firmino and Ian Rush.

That's going to help.

The telepatic connection with his teammate.... The sprint in between two defenders to take on a perfect weigthed pass.... The sensitive chip over the goalie..... The glorious scenes in the corner of Selhurst park while yet another opposition realize they lost the game!!! It is basicly a mustache and a Crown Paints logo that separates them!!

Ironically, those of you moaning most about Brendan's posting being repetitive & tiresome are also dragging the debate down & baiting him to respond time & again.

Quite fucking true

this happens with every cunt on the site. They make unpopular opinions, then they're hounded and goaded and called a "troll"

Can be as myopic as RAWK sometimes on here

Also, I think we'll finish at a hard fought 4th this season. There's frig all chance that our current front 3 will Maintain this form.

Our only hope is origi coming in and tearing shit up when mane goes to the ANC in January

This is partly it. I think Firmino is a good player. But I don't like him as a striker, and I do miss aspects of how we play if/ when certain types of striker don't seem to "fit" that system. I just love watching deadly, quality finishers scoring goals. I'm sure we had (I know we had) similar debate about Crouch and Baros being "great team players" and allowing others to score. Didn't like them either.

Certainly watching Gerrard ping balls over the top for Torres/ Owen/ whoever to run onto is an aspect of play I miss a bit, but all I really care about is winning, so it's not a massive issue.

The question is, can we win a title with this squad and playing style?

And it isn't just about goals scored, obviously.

I think that's a very fair and honest way to address it. Nothing to disagree with here and I can certainly understand the appeal of a having a great finisher in the team.

However, I think the premise of your OP is all wrong. Klopp certainly knows the value of good finishers – he has won his first Bundesliga title with Lucas Barrios (a classic poacher) spearheading the attack and second one with Lewandowski. Anticipating his star striker's departure to Bayern, he then went ahead and signed Aubameyang – so both of the current star strikers of German football have been signed and developed by Klopp. It's Guardiola who prefers "false nines" to real ones, Klopp so far in his career almost always played with a proper striker up front. This new fluid and "strikerless" 4-3-3 system is a recent development from him (possibly Guardiola's influence), but so far it's working so well that there is absolutely no reason to change it. As soon as it stops working, I'm sure Klopp would revert back to a more traditional set-up up front. The problem for you is that when it happens, it will likely involve another player you happen to randomly dislike – Origi.

Regarding the impact of a few of our starters missing a game through injury - this season I think is when Klopp reestablishes a true identity and personality in the club again. The performance dropped without Gino & Lallana because a) they're both very good players in good form; and b) they are among the small group of players whom Klopp trusts to shape the team in his image.

It's been a while since such a clear and cohesive identity could be detected in our play. I reckon next summer he'll add a handful of players who will understand and fit that identity, who will give us some much needed depth.

Actually it's called having a minority opinion. And opinions is what forums are all about. I don't agree with some of Brendan's theories whilst others I wholeheartedly agree with. However the forum would be a poorer place without opposing POV and I value Brendan's threads even if I don't agree with them all. Look how these last two have sparked debate and inspired some interesting posts/theories as well as the surfacing of obscure facts/stats.

Brendan's a troll. When threads become about posters not posts, it generally means there's a troll about. And he's obviously one.

No, there is another.

And some made-up ones.

If ever anyone needs to look up the meaning of 'troll' in a dictionary, this thread would be it.

Not it wouldn't. Seriously, can we stop with ridiculous posts like this? Just because someone raises a debate about where we might be able to improve.

Re-read the opening post again, it's not even remotely trolling and it's promoted good discussions.

I bet everyone said that Vardy wouldn't sustain his scoring last year but he did, so we could have a spread of goals across the forward line all season.

We have Coutinho, Firmino, Mane, and Milner who have all scored 4 goals this season, whereas Chelsea, Arsenal only have 2 with Spurs and United having one. I Would rather be in our position in that ours goals are spread across the forward line - it is harder to contain 4 players than 1 or 2.

The other bit is that one may go quiet for a few games and that is where us having multiple goalscorers actually helps us.

Yeah, I don't buy that we don't have that in our weaponry. We've done it loads through Mane and others. We scored a great goal against Leicester through Mane breaking clear and squaring it to Firmino. Origi did a brilliant dummy and turn to run clear against Spurs last week. Against Spurs in the league, Vorm played the sweeper role to thwart our counter attacks, he came out and made two excellent sliding challenges on Mane, after Mane was sent clear.

Lucas played an excellent though ball last week against Spurs that saw us break their defensive line. We do it, we just don't have a central obvious focal point that is looked for when playing the through ball. Coutinho has loved it this season having Mane runnning off the shoulder.

It isn't rocket science, is it?

I loved Torres, but a significant part of the reason for Rafa's downfall (and us dropping from second to seventh or something) was Torres starting to mope on field, and becoming half the player he had been before. We were so heavily dependant upon him that we were severely damaged by injuries to him and SG, and then also by the spectacular lack of effort from Torres. Last year we suffered due to a reliance on Studge, who was faltering from one injury to another. We are in a much more healthy position with this style of play.
