Eek, I've met his son a few times.

Bad news.

Has apparently been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, fucking sad news. How serious is this type of cancer.

In over 30% of NHL cases it ends up being terminal. If the cancer itself does not kill, patients often suffer from the toxicity of the drugs used.

But there are drugs coming out, that are promising for better. Hopefully some of the scientists will pull their fingers out and give us something soon.

I was researching on investing in a firm (CTIC - Cell Therapeutics) that has a promising drug in it's pipeline - Pixantrone. It is available in Europe on a named patient basis. It is undergoing additional 3rd phase trials to get approval from the FDA in the US.

Fingers crossed....

Re: Gary Ablett

Ouch, not good news.

I thought he did very well to win the reserves cup before doing shit the year after, wouldn't have minded seeing him in amongst the backroom staff again.

My best mate from college died of this, just about the time his little boy (my godson) was starting school. Here's hoping for a better outcome now.

Thoughts and prayers for Gary Ablett.

Re: Gary Ablett

Best of luck to him. If 30% are fatal, 70% live.

Wouldn't want to be up against it, but that's not bad odds.

He needs all the luck he can get.

This is a terrible terrible form of cancer to get. 30% fatality rate was a number i pulled out of the air to appriximate and that is probably the most optimistic picture anyone could paint.

More accurate stats are closer to 30 to 50% 5 year survival rate.
http://www.lymphomation.org/statistics.htm

It has also improved more recently to something close to 60% 5 year survival rate.

More importantly the treatment process to keep him healthy is a very very painful process and the medication often results in Cardiac Toxicity. But we are ever so close with modern medicine. Hopefully there is something out there sooner than later.

Are you a doctor, julian?

You're right about these percentages, for sure...doesnt mean much, probably

My friend was afficted with soft-tissue sarcoma, and was given very good chances of survival.

Ditn work out that way.

For sure, I agree with you. i wasn't trying to make light of it, just trying to be positive.

No someone very dear to me passed away after suffering from this.

Ever since, i have been rooting for biotech and pharma firms to come up with some cure.

If i had money, this is definitely where i would give.

I've a relative with the same condition, who, following treatment is in 'remission' and has been for some years. Hopefully Gary will respond well to treatment. He's a relatively young guy with a whole lot of life to lead.

I can't imagine the anxiety hearing the bad news must give, it must be incredibly difficult not to have your every waking thought coloured by it.

Best wishes to him and his family.
