From Wooo to Pooooo

For once I can't agree. In his first season, after Owen picked up one of his injuries quite early in the season, Heskey replaced him as the spearhead of our attack and was unstoppable. Nobody could cope with him that season.

I didn't say he was crap, just that he was hardly 'woo'. He scored 14 league goals. That's not really unstoppable! Owen was a 'woo,' so was Fowler, so was Torres, so was Suarez, but Heskey? Nah. He started promisingly, surely no more than that.

Macca: debatable. For one thing that's a pretty good tally for only part of a season. For another, "goals scored" isn't the one and only measure anyway - while opposition defenders were worrying about Heskey the rest of the side got more opportunities than they otherwise would have. Watching those opposition defenders at the time, I got the distinct impression more than once that some of them were flat-out scared of that much beef on the hoof, moving with real pace AND with an eye for goal at the end of it.

Only part of a season? You mean his first, then? That was three goals then! We'll have to disagree to differ, I just can't remember ever being THAT impressed by old Emile. I liked him, but I never once woo'd. Oh well, to paraphrase The Clash, phoney Heskeymania has bitten the dust!

I thought that Stephen Wright was ace, thought we were mental selling him to Sunderland for 1m... but I dunno what the hell he did after that, disappeared.

David Thompson, better that that Gerrard kid.

I quite often hear people say this about David Thompson, but personally I always thought Gerrard was very obviously going to be a big player and that Thompson was a bit of a grafter. I know that because I remember at the time thinking that the fact that my elder sister thought that Thompson was the superior player was just further confirmation that she didn't really have a clue about football.

Mendieta is another player that suffered a pretty catastrophic fall from grace. From CL finals and superstar transfer fees to... Middlesborough. That's gotta hurt.

Aquilani was one for me. I always wanted us to sign Joaquin also, but he has faded away in recent years hasnt he.
