Every team needs a Dirk like player. A player always available and works hard and is intelligent. In talent stakes he is slightly lacking, but ive grown to accept although we may need technically better, very few will work as hard and as selflessly as him

Dirk is more than the sum of his parts through his sheer infectious drive, a quality that is as rare and precious as the talents displayed by more obviously technically gifted players. I love him.
Another thing that Deadly deserves to have chalked up to his credit is that big occasions don't faze him in front of goal. The winning pen.against the Chavs in that unforgettable CL semi-final at Anfield, the two goals against the blueslime in that derby game, the goal in Athens (even though we lost) - I'd hate to lose anyone who can do that.

I think if Dirk had a reliably good first touch it would be enough to go from a good player to a pretty much almost brilliant one.

Yeah, most of the time it's like the cliche "His second touch is a tackle" was written for him, but there have been times when I've seen him take one of Xabi's 60 yard crossfield with an exquisite delicacy.
I think more than anything it's the inconsistency that frustrates. Some days you watch him and think "Top 4 teams would be happy to have that starting" and yet other days it's just dreadful. I know everybody has good spells and bad spells, but Dirk's range between the two seems to be greater than most

If this is everyones pinnacle then we are fucking easily pleased, and if it was accepted by people who actually matter, probably are really doomed to mediocrity.
Great to have around the place, great team player, and I don't dismiss the effect of him pledging his troth at all, I think the rest of the players also think the world of him, but we can't afford that as a luxury.
We need players that are effective technically and make the difference regularly with the ball, hard work and enthusiasm are not in themselves enough to justify a permanent place in the side.
If we had Turan on the left, Maxi on the right and a half decent forward to help Torres , where would that leave Dirk?
Look chaps, sad as it may seem - nice guys don't always win, there is far too much sentiment involved in peoples thinking on this.
Dirk is a great lad , would die for the cause and is a great squad player, but, if we have any ambition of fighting our way back he should not be an an automatic choice
