phraraoaorar. Jesus Christ...........an average footballer with an above average work-rate and an infectious enthusiasm, which probably makes him better than that average footballer.
Yes he's nice to have, and he's nice to cuddle up to. People have short memories, much of last season he was dire, it's a good thing there are a few realists around here to save you plunging too deeply into an irreversible Dirk-fest.

If this is everyones pinnacle then we are fucking easily pleased, and if it was accepted by people who actually matter, probably are really doomed to mediocrity.
Great to have around the place, great team player, and I don't dismiss the effect of him pledging his troth at all, I think the rest of the players also think the world of him, but we can't afford that as a luxury.
We need players that are effective technically and make the difference regularly with the ball, hard work and enthusiasm are not in themselves enough to justify a permanent place in the side.
If we had Turan on the left, Maxi on the right and a half decent forward to help Torres , where would that leave Dirk?
Look chaps, sad as it may seem - nice guys don't always win, there is far too much sentiment involved in peoples thinking on this.
Dirk is a great lad , would die for the cause and is a great squad player, but, if we have any ambition of fighting our way back he should not be an an automatic choice

Old chum, I really don't know who you think you're answering here. I haven't noticed (m)any people saying he should be an automatic choice, still less that he's "everyone's pinnacle". We're just bigging up the things Deadly CAN offer, as you yourself set out in your own post. Was the beer off down the local last night or something?

I think Vlad's spot on. 'People have short memories' is the key phrase there. When Dirk's off form - which he has been for perhaps half his time with us - he can be horrible to watch, and deeply frustrating, particularly against teams who just set out to nullify us (ie most of the teams we play). Having a decent World Cup hasn't suddenly changed him into Zinedine Zidane.

So no, despite liking him a lot and seeing his many values as a player, he is not my favourite Redman. Not even close, in fact. And if Inter offered us £15m, I'd bite their hands off.

(Oh, and yes, the quote was from Mark. I wasn't having a go, by the way: people are allowed to change their minds. I just felt it was a bit rich to get lambasted for daring to suggest Kuyt wasn't all that good at football by a couple of posters who used to call him 'shit' every single week for about two years.)
that's exactly why I didn't lambast you. Me and deadly have had our ups and downs, but as a good red he's pretty much without par.

Kuyt on his day is a fantastic player. As many point out when he's not, he's pretty grim, though even then, he always puts in a shift, which makes it less grim than say Babel on an off day.

Very much so. If he does score on Sunday he will enter a rather special group of players who have scored in that final and the European Cup Final:

Zinedine Zidane
Dirk Kuyt

Not at all JJ , it was a very nice draught Peroni at Formby Hall Golf Club, on a charity night for Isaac's House
http://isaacshouse.org/ ...........if anyone wants to get involved or contribute.
In fact reading back on it considering the time of day and the volumes of Peroni, it still looks relatively coherent 😉
Automatic choice? I think there are a number op people suggesting, or at least alluding to just that

I thought the same thing when I stayed at Formby Hall earlier in the year, nice place - even more enjoyable was the look of total perplexion on my dads face when I explained the set up to him, given that he used to ride his bike there as a kid ("when I were a lad all this were fields" moment).

Re Kuyt - as is the way with these things, I think we probabably oscillate between two extremes with Dirk, neither of which are accurate; at best he's no world beater, at worst he's certainly a decent footballer.

OK, I'll take that.

I was very impressed with the Formby Hall set up, I have heard people talking about it recently, but had no idea it was as nice as it was.

BTW, Vlad, I went to the Isaacs House site when you posted about it before and sent them a little cash. Hope the do went well.

Cheers JJ, good man.
Yes it was very good, in fact much better than those do's usually are. The band wasn't bad either local Formby "rockers" if there is such a thing, The Anchormen

Kuyt on his day is a fantastic player. As many point out when he's not, he's pretty grim, though even then, he always puts in a shift, which makes it less grim than say Babel on an off day.
That is the key, even when he is off he really isn't because he will still give you 100% on all areas of the pitch.

So Dirk has never had played a bad game in his life?

Vlad has it spot on for me. Seems like a real genuine sort of bloke, however he's not an untouchable.

Agreed with that as well.

Shame Rafa didn't agree with the bolded part though...

IDK but other than Pepe I would say he is the most reliable player in the squad.

I had a dream last night that Dirk scored from the right hand side of the six yard box in a bit of a goalmouth scramble. It was a powerful shot more or less into the middle of the goal that hit the roof of the net, in the 81st minute to give the Dutch a 2-1 win.

I love Dirk but didn't love Rafa's penchant for playing him even when horrifically off form.
Is there any sane fan who did? 🙂

I hope not! No player should be undroppable. Unfortunately, when off form Kuyt is quite simply terrible. But generally he is a very useful player and a fantastic character who clearly loves the club, city, and supporters.
