Firmino

He's a forward not a midfielder.... hes a number 10 if you ask me, but not the typical Coutinho type....

He's be better in a 4-4-2 I reckon.

Yea, he's the classic 'second striker' in a 4-4-2. Ideally playing off a pacy goalscorer and creating space for the goalscorer number 9 around the opposition defense by making the right movements, hard work and running the channels. i.e. Okazaki last season.

This 4-3-3 / 4-3-2-1 really doesn't suit him.

His stats are decent enough for a first season, but they don't show how inconsistent he can be, how anonymous he can be from some game. He's another frustrating AM who can light up the stadium with his talent, but it's all too rare when it happens and you tend to find yourself surprised when it does.

He's okay, meh, good enough, but I can't imagine many opposition players or managers fear playing him.

I like him, I get the frustration though.
Well said. I like him too and have hopes he will come better!! He is physical strong, lay down a hell of a job in our press (just look who always makes the first sprints to close the others down) and is cool enough to play others good with his runs and passing. So Lets hope he works a bit more on his own Magic.

Why do people keep saying he scored 10 goals from Midfield?
He played as a forward in most games that he scored in.

That's the thing I don't understand either - people viewing him as an attacking midfielder. He just seems like a forward/striker to me. Yes he occasionally drops deep or pops up out wide but generally speaking he's like an out and out centre forward. To me anyway.

To be fair to him, he was in a nice little run of form around January before getting injured again. 2 goals(1 a beauty) at home to Arsenal and another brace at Norwich etc so it's a shame we never got to see how he'd have done for a longer period. Appreciate it was his first season also, but still, just something amiss with him and like a lot of players in our squad there's huge question marks over his consistency. It's that type of inconsistently that leaves us miles behind in the League most years.

Not really. It's buying players the quality of Lucas that's left us miles behind in the league most years

Firmino has all the tools of a really good attacking player, but consistency is a legitimate concern. Last season he was definitely blowing hot and cold and, like @Woland said, you could just see in the first 5 minutes of a game if it's going to be a "good Firmino" or a "bad Firmino" tonight. There could be a lot of possible excuses given for this, such as the first year in a new country, change of manager mid-season, being asked to play in several different positions, and lack of chemistry with Benteke up front. Judging by his stats in Germany, he was pretty consistent in his last 2 seasons there, so let's hope we see it this season – there are definitely no excuses any more.

I thought he was fairly consistent once Klopp got his feet into the role but then he got injured.

Give him this season and see how he does. If he's shite (or one of those players that divide opinion), then let's actually get rid and not prepare for another Brazilian testimonial.

I'm by no means blaming Firmino alone. I'm referring to the inconsistency throughout the squad....most years.

We've been consistently buying shit or mid table players with an occasional Worldy. Which actually mimics out recent trophy collection.

He is a forward/striker with playmaking and defensive abilities then. But I think @JohnnyRocket said it best - his best position is undoubtedly that of a 2nd striker, like a Bergkamp playing behind Henry (Okazaki/Vardy or Deeney/Ighalo works too, but slightly less glamorous of a comparison). He has everything that's needed to succeed in this position: unpredictability and swagger, good movement, some playmaking ability, goal-scoring. Defensive contribution is a nice bonus and is a rarity in this position. So the tools are there, but like everybody said, consistency is the real issue he needs to sort out this season.

Let's face it: He's the new Luis Garcia. Great and Terrible are both possible.

For all his stats, he has some way to go before he can be compared to King Luis. He may end up scoring more goals than Garcia but Garcia had the knack of scoring stunning goals in major games - Juve, Chelsea. Firmino has a some way to go before reaching that level of impact.

He's a good player. But because he's not scoring twenty league goals a season or doing fancy flicks/running with searing pace, he's often underrated.

I like him but I don't really know why. Although those nutmeg skills he shows on occasion probably have something to do with it.

Lucas etc are bang average though. Our problem is that we're always looking to the likes of Firmino to be World Class, whereas at a Chelsea or City they'd get away with a similar contribution but would be supplemented with a few consistent, top quality players.

Yup. He's a great supporting actor, but no way should he be the leading man. Same with Coutinho

I'm not sure if this tattoo of his has been mentioned yet, but I feel it's only right that it is. Fuck me it's bad.

Hes never been a striker, he comes deep for the ball with runners beyond him, which is frustrating as he's proven himself to be a bit of a predator in the box, he just needs to be in their a bit more, rather doing the tippy tappy bellend midfield overload act with coutinho and lallana

Id suggest lallana is equally problematic to the way we attack though, as he's essentially a watered down version of firmino in this respect

Alot of his play in Germany and his strengths came from playing on the shoulder or generally being a bit of a roamer. He commands the ball fairly well and has good upper body strength, he's also good at picking out the short intricate passes to players who run beyond him, that's the sort of stuff we don't do nearly enough, nor have we had alot of pace around him or Coutinho for them to pick out. Hopefully that'll happen more now with the likes of Mane and Origi.
