English Cricket/ *The Ashes*!

That i agree, but i do get why he made that mistake. Besides we have the referral system for exactly these kind of situations and it should have been used in a better way...

Errrr, should have been used in a better way? Have you ACTUALLY watched any of the match?

One appeal was for a ball that pitched outside the line by about half an inch, and the other was for a ball that actually was hitting the stumps, but not full ball. That sounds like two pretty much spot on referrals in my book.

Dar may also have been influenced by the fact that he had just had an LBW decision over-ruled on referral, because it had pitched fractionally outside leg stump.

Ha.

Given some of the decisions that went englands way last year, it's s bit rich to start blaming aleem dar here.

Oh dear....will this be Johnson's worst match figures yet?

He needs a break. I rate him as a bowler, but he needs to learn how to move the ball in the air.

They've taken 1 wicket for over 300 runs. Johnson's not the only one who needs to pull his finger out.

As I suspected - no ability to take 20 wickets.

This is why I love test cricket.

It couldn't really have got more bleak yesterday when Hussey and Haddin were going to town.

Today I have had the pleasure of watching proceedings unfold with my Aussie friends and relatives who were at first gloating, then steadily more reticent, then screaming for Mitchell 'the stare' Johnson to be cremated alive.

1/309. Thank you very fucking much. If England draw this match, as is likely, it will be every fucking bit as good as a win.

Agreed. I'm also surprised at the lack of effort. They are not bending their back. Bowling at 130 to 135 kph with very little swing on offer from the kookaburra ball is terrible stuff and it is no surprise that England have negotiated that easily.

Ponting is clueless on using Spinners. It didn't show when Warne was around. Even a Harbhajan or Swann would struggle to bowl under Ponting. I would have not taken the new ball straight after tea. I would have taken it closer to end of play and used the spinners to attack for the majority of the post tea session. He had three spin bowlers at his disposal ...Doherty, North and Clarke. If this is how it is going to be, they are better off playing 4 fast bowlers.

I wonder if England could go for the win? would be one he'll of a comeback fantastic stuff today, two sides which are not great but very evenly matched so it should be an exciting ashes for sure. The Australian attack is the worst I've seen for many a year. Rain forecast tomorrow though lets hope it holds off.

I think an England win is unlikely but not impossible. It's a funny old game and we have all seen incredible turns of fortune in test matches.

There are cracks on the wicket the size of the Suez Canal. So far, these have not had much effect on its playability. Assuming England get into a position to declare on the last day, they won't do so until the target for the Aussies is unrealistically high. However, in my opinion it is not beyond the bounds of possibility for Swann to have some fun with those cracks.

Similarly Portly, were perfectly capable of collapsing and creating some squeaky bum time.

We need to Knight Strauss and Cook for yesterday, they were impeccable.

Shit, I had forgotten about that scenario! :-[

As it's the first test I cannot see strauss declaring with any risk unless Peterson comes in and smashes it about I think he will wait until the afternoon session late on

Great stuff from Cook and Trott.
What a performance. What a turnaround and what a third innings.

Id love to go after em for the last 50 but i dont think we will. Take the draw and run.

Great fun.
Im gonna be suffering tmrw but fuck it ay!
Pitch it up, throw it to Swann, crowd the bat, press press press.
Nothing to lose here.

Hmm, makes you wonder if they should have left Cook in to go for the 300! Still, he has apparently broken Don Bradmans record in Brissy. Fantastic stuff.

For England this feels like a win, and me too who got royally laughed at by my cocky Australian counterparts for suggesting it would still end in one after the 1st innings.

Ponting is not going to leave the crease for a long while in the 2nd test is he? Looking determined, hes such a gutsy competitor.

The attack looks poor, Siddle is the worry. Hes got that typical aggressive Aussie competitor thing, that seemed to be strangely lacking in many of this side.

Cant wait for Adelaide! I love this time of year! i took a sickie today, wish id saved it for friday now. although it is nice to be sat in 35 degrees drinking beer on a monday! Ahhhh. ;D

Don't think I've ever seen such a peachy scorecard.

Ponting must still be fuming over this.

Could have played out very differently.

The wicket at Adelaide is another featherbed though - another draw is favourite with the bookies. I've put a tenner on the draw with Betfair at 21/20.

I hope the prepare a wicket with a bit more in it.

The last two days was dreadfully one sided between bat and ball ...

It may have been fun for the English fan, but for a neutral (well i'm more pro Aussies actually) it was quite boring. It was like the first two tests in the India NZ series. There was nothing in it for the bowlers.

Also, Australia have called up Doughey and Ryan Harris for the Adelaide test.

I hope they don't give the axe to Hilfenhaus. He is worth keeping his place.

I'd line them up like this...

Watto, Kattich, Punter, Clarke (last chance), Hussey, Haddin, Spinner, Harris, Siddle, Hilfenhaus and Bollinger.

It is a bit weak in the batting department and puts a lot of pressure on Clarke to come good, but i think they have to take that chance. They need to unsettled the English batsmen first and foremost. It seems they have gotten in to a neat comfort zone, and that needs to be disturbed for the rest of the series.

I'd toss a coin between North and Doherty for the spinner slot. Why did they not include Smith in the side i wonder....

In all fairness, they should recall Hauritz for that spinner slot. He is the best they have got.

I would also give serious thought for bringing Hughes back (for Clarke) in to open with Watto, and dropping Katich to the number 4 slot Clarke occupies.

Here are some inequalities for the Aussie selectors to digest. Admittedly, i have not seen much of Smith or O'keefe, but they have performed better than Doherty/North etc in the shield cricket.

Hauritz > O'keefe, Doherty, North, Smith

O'keefe > Doherty, North, Smith

Homeless Cripple > North. Drop him for fucks sake...

Bollinger >> Johnson

Get it right....for fucks sake.

Word is that Ponting and Hauritz have had a major difference of opinion, and Ponting does not want Hauritz in the side at all. That is poor from Ponting.

In one respect yes, but if the situation between them is THAT poor it could well damage morale and team spirit, and in the process do more harm than good to Australia's chances, for the two of them to be yoked together in the same team.
