Carra was shite first twenty mins, the fact he pulled himself into that performance is immense.

Gerrard was appalling. Rooney was appalling. Heskey was worse.

Fuck me, at least we know the cunts have to perform next match. All or nothing.

I thought Gerrard was the only one in midfield driving forwards.
He did ok.
Gerrard was poor Stu.

The whole side really look like they have done too much work in the build up to the tournament

It surely cannot be entirely surprising to long suffering England fans that a fancied bunch of 'stars' have underperformed. We've been here before.

I'm of the opinion that anxiety plays a huge factor, professionals that they are they don't seem to be able to cope with the expectation and go into their shells.

You get the feeling they're content not to make any personal mistakes rather than be bold for fear of being lampooned in the press (which will happen anyway). You'd hope that the opportunity to enhance their reputation on the world stage would inspire them, it seems to have the opposite effect.

There were no positives to be taken from that game other than the fact that in the third and final game England must win or return home. Crystal clear, we are already in the knockout stages.

Too much work? What kind, digging up roads? They look like they haven't seen a football in months.

Spot on. None of the players were prepared to take a risk. In fairness to Wright-Phillips and Defoe, our attack was completely listless until they came on and tried to do something positive with the ball.

Don't call me a cunt, Niall.

They didn't look knackered to me, just unable to string two passes together. I'm not sure at what point over-confidence turned to a total lack of confidence, but it didn't seem to go through an intermediate spell of confidence.

I don't know what to say about that to be honest.
I don't remember ever being this gutted about an England performance, or in fact seeing a worse one. So lifeless and pathetic.
The only people who come out of that with any kind of credit are Jamie Carragher and David James, both of whom were absolutely excellent. Every other player was laughable.

I can only think that Wayne Rooney is injured, it was such an abject display from him, his first touch was awful and there's was little effort from him. Lampard was shite, gerrard was shite, Barry meh, Johnson shite, Terry shite, Lennon shite, heskey shite. Where is Joe Cole? He's probably our most creative player!
I don't think heskey will play again, I think crouch should get his chance now. But I dunno.
All is lost.
🙁

This is why I said I would end up feeling sorry for you.

I didn't even see the match tonight, so I can't comment on how it went - but this is a team that Ireland beat 3-0 a month ago.

There's too many players in that England team who have struggled with injuries and too many who have been off form for recent long periods. It was always going to be a struggle, then throw in the fact that some of the others are amongst the most braindead footballers in the Premiership and things don't really look great.

Given that the same issues arise in every single tournament, is it every manager getting things wrong or is it the players ?

Haven't read the thread, but thought Stevie was utter shit tonight.

Granted, it was a testament to his quality that he still provided some of the most incisive passes of the game, but the number of times he shirked out of a tackle or an interception and decided to amble around half arsed instead of showing some passion and drive was shocking.

If I was Capello I'd have buried my foot in his arse at half time, he looked like a sulky teenager out there. True, it must've hurt to have produced a good performance from the middle and then be shunted out to the left wing, but doesn't give you the right to ponce about for 75 minutes.

That entire game was a microcosm of everything I hate about watching England, I dunno why I ever fucking bother

I'm so very sad tonight. I've realised that both the teams I love are just going to keep letting me down.
I don't see what change in the next 4 days that can make enough of a difference to beat to a better side than Algeria.
All season with Liverpool I kept thinking illogically that THE NEXT game was the one that would spark us into life. That spark never came and it was depressing when I realised it wasn't. Right here and now I can't even hope that the next game is THE GAME that turns it all round for England.
I think were out, we won't play much better And the slovs are much better.
England and Liverpool.......suckstobeme!

Thought they looked tired to be honest. Johnson was very sluggish and Heskey looked like he was wrecked.

If Capello drops Lampard & Heskey, plays Cole & Crouch they will qualify for the next round.
And pigs will fucking fly.

The best I will hope for is that we'll qualify despite those two being picked.

Surely to God an experienced manager like Capello cant fail to pick up on the obvious.

Actually....wait..this sounds somewhat familiar

wayne rooney looked scared. The ball came near him, he sacked off running like he was injured or he hoped to dear fuck someone else would get it. He was shit, and didn't know what to do. Pass it to Lampard? Oh no, he's shit, he'll fuck it up. Shaun/lennon? Ditto. Stevie G, the captain? Nah, effort. Might as well shoot. Oh no, tackled like.

fucking shite. anyone who continually picks heskey deserves the sack. fuck capello, he's the same as the other shit england managers.

I think Gerrard is being unfairly criticised, he was involved in almost all of Englands best move despite being played out of position.

Gerrard was far from being the worst offender. Rooney and Lampard didn't deserve to stay on the pitch. At least in Heskey's case, he only reproduced his usual club form.

Worst stepover ever

I don't think that's our best XI, nor our best formation, but I'm really not convinced that picking a different team is going to change anything. Rooney is our best striker by miles and he was utterly shite last night. He clearly had no confidence at all. The problem here is mental IMO, not physical or tactical. Blame Capello all you want, but I think even Jose Mourinho, even the combined ghosts of Bill Shankly and Brian Clough, would struggle to get this England team performing at their best in World Cup finals. As has been said, it's a malaise that goes back decades.
