Emre Can

Can is often compared to Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, due to his ability to switch from attack to defence with ease. He also boasts a powerful shot and can comfortably dictate the tempo of a game. His powerful forays forward have also drawn comparisons to Toni Kroos.

I asked a colleague, who is a Bayern Munich season ticket holder, what he thought about Emre Can and he had this to say:
"I think he played for us a couple of times last year, other than that I haven't a fucking clue mate."

True story.

Hyypia last year:

"He [Can] has everything needed to play in many positions, and he is well on the way to becoming a very good player.

"He is incredible with the ball; has great technique, and he is strong in one-on-one situations. He plays better offensively, but he can defend well, and that aspect of his game should not be underestimated"

"He still has much to learn, though. He needs more patience when making decisions, but he's smart enough to learn that."

Google Translate didn't do a very good job of translating the Bayer forum.

Most seem a bit annoyed about the get out clause in Can's contract but also that they probably would've ended up losing him to Bayern eventually anyways so better he go to us. Pragmatic as Germans are they're considering who they can replace him with (Kramer, Geis).

In terms of the player himself, a popular train of thought that he's a "fighter", talented but inconsistent and perhaps better off staying with them for another year.

Yeah, I'm wading through it as well, but you pretty well summed it up.

Some google translate gems though

"Rolfes is a bottle and Castro will be sad again"

"In addition, nothing is STILL in dry towels!"

"In Carvajal it was something else. Since Madrid wanted him back, and since he likes playing as really quite a shovel better."

"Transfer of surplus could be spent on other construction sites. Would be a shame, but not fatal."

"Cans Game Type deceptive because sometimes something."

"Rolfes is a discontinued model. Ötzunali can play that position, but is more of an 8-seater?"

"...the Bavarians, who seem to swim at the moment so in coal that they are careless."

football boner, I love the pig farmer

Except this is a bullshit comparison, as I said before. At this age Schweinsteiger was a RW/AM, he converted to CM later in his career. Can plays the range of positions from LB, CB, DM to CM – a lot more defensive. He does have good dribbling ability though, maybe you can compare him with Moussa Dembele.

The comparison was that he too can switch from attack to defence with ease, as said, Scweinsteiger was an attacker but he can play the defensive role well. I don't think it was saying that they play the same role or position, just that his ability to play more defensive when required, despite his obvious attacking ability, is where the comparison is drawn from.

Can, will surely provide good competition to both Hendo and Gerrard. His distribution is not so great but still if he is paired with Gerrard or hendo, that should take care of itself. Can be a very unique player in our squad due to his physicality, dribbling skills, he is also good in air. He was so shit in that LB position, so I hope such situation doesnt arise that he has to play there. Specially now we are about to sign another LB (Moreno), so it is clear that BR has some plans about Can to use him in midfield. I have high hopes for Can, in both Liverpool and German NT. Not sure if this season will be the right one to judge him but on long term he may become a great player for us.

Emre Can is “average” and “won’t improve Liverpool” according to Jan Aage Fjortoft, the former Premier League striker turned German TV pundit has been telling Sky Sports News Radio Can is a poor signing by Brendan Rodgers.

I know it doesn't say a lot but it's all I have to go on: his videos are underwhelming and there doesn't seem to be a broad agreement that he's done anything special yet. Hope he's good enough for us to actually play some games without impacting our play and he's not another Alberto, Aspas, Borini, etc.

They were quite similar in the way they played as central strikers, but earlier in his career Kevin Davies also played wide at times - Fjortoft could never have done that. He was also underhand in the way he fouled people, whereas with Davies it's at least out in the open. Davies also comes across in interviews as at least halfway human, whereas Fjortoft comes across as the snidey cnut he was on the pitch.

Well he can just get fucked.

That's pretty much were I stand, his videos weren't impressive at all, so I've yet to be convinced. When people talk about his qualities and his versatility comes out time and time again as his best asset, the warning bells begin to reverberate. Germany have in recent years been placing their trust in youth and he's not even had a cap yet. But let's hope he's been well scouted and my initial judgement is wrong (In Rodgers We Trust). He has been schooled the Bayern Munich way and that fact that Leverkusen`s sporting director (I think) was pissed, should reassure us. If it's a case of buying for the future, I'd prefer we utilised Rossiter, who seems a far better prospect and hasn't looked out of place at every level he's stepped up to. And with the £10m bought a 25 or 26 year old who is currently much better than we already have or went all out and recruited a prodigious talent like Pogba.

I don't think 10M buys you a 26 year old that is better than what we have - we are finding that out with Lallana. There are bargains out there, sure, but you are again in the territory of taking Aspas type punts.

I have long argued in favour of not blocking the path of our top youngsters but in truth Rossiter is at the very least a year off where Can is in terms of his development and we need someone who can rotate with Gerrard and the like now.

I'm not sure if Can himself is the answer, though I like the look of him, but it seems the right sort of gamble.
