Dynamic duo: Henderson & Fabinho

What about Arsenal’s Gilberto Silva - I think he was still good at 31-32. Lots of defensively-minded Brazilians stay at the top level well into their late 30’s: Thiago Silva, Dani Alves, Lucio, Fernandinho, Cafu etc. Fading early is more common with attackers, particularly those living a party lifestyle - Fabinho being a quiet family man and a good professional seemed a safe bet from something like that happening.

And yet… Was there some kind of injury we don’t know about (or one described as “minor,” that had long-term consequences of some sort)? That’s the only explanation I can think of.

Yeah, was just a minor point. If anything you'd expect more of a drop off in a player like Fernandinho rather than Fabinho.

There were warning signs, every time he had an injury lay off or preseason he looked like he struggled more than he should upon his return.

Fab will come back in the team against Wolves and will be out POTY for the 2nd half of the season as we go on to finish 4th and win the CL.

MARK MY FUCKING WORDS

[article]As you can see from the image above, the league's leaders have improved massively in their midfield progressive stats by taking their pass accuracy from 51% in the 2021/2022 season to 60% – that's an astounding increase of 9 percentage points, which places them at the top of ranking for this metric, and two percentage points above Man City (with a 58% success rate).

On the other hand, Liverpool have decreased their success rate in progressive passes by seven and five percentage points in the pitch's midfield and attacking areas, respectively.

Another key thing to note here is that Brighton have the third-highest overall progressive pass success rate in the league, just behind Arsenal and City – with De Zerbi's men improving significantly in their defensive progression accuracy stats by +10 percentage points![/article]

See - part of me hates stats like this - there’s a bit of correlation Vs causation with sone baseline figures in there.

What I interpret is - Arsenal have greatly improved from being shit and we’ve tanked from being amazing, while City have maintained.

City are flat on a high level - Arsenal & Liverpool are widely variable.

if you apply history - those trends will be reversed next season.

That's true, actually, I noticed that. Maybe the club should have paid attention as well.

Klopp has always hated press conferences, and has been disdainful, as he rightly should be, of the sports press.

He knows that their job is to make stupid clickbait headlines, and to focus on individual players. There's no interesting discussion of any tactics, no nuanced understanding of anything.

So he has to play a game where he responds to questions without writing a headline, but he must also be charming to do this, but he must also answer the same questions again and again. It's a pointless exercise.

Every human being in the world would be better at doing this if they are winning. We are not. Klopp isn't losing "it," he's losing games.

The fact that you see that press conference and say he's losing it, is precisely why he doesn't want to bounce from player to player either scapegoating or talking about form.

He really has become a miserable bastard

Where's the 2015 version of Klopp that would light up a room by his mere presence. We need that version back.

I guess it's difficult to be all smiles and jokes when your team is getting thrashed week in, week out.

He's trying to protect his players and the club at the moment but just has to be mindful that once the media here make you out to be a salty prick, it's kinda hard to shake that tag off.

To be honest, I didn't watch the clip because it has become quite tedious to watch him lately and I roughly know what he said based on the headlines. Whether he meant it or not, with our run of results, most people who are not associated with the club will read the headlines - "Jurgen Klopp was not a happy man as he was questioned about Jordan Henderson's place at Liverpool", and infer he is losing it. That's just the reality of it.

He could have played it better, brush them off with a non answer, and get on his way. Instead, he is exactly giving them what he hates; fuel to write about him with his passive aggressive responses.

Is this the beginning of the end?

This forum was full of praise for how both Brendan & Kenny approached press conferences when they first started, but both ended up being complained about towards the latter half of their tenures. Maybe the SCM reaction to manager's press conference styles is the harbinger of doom to come.

Nah. He’s got far too much credit in the bank. He’s spending it like, but he still has a lot left.
Yep, if it's Klopp you're referring to.
Winning the CL bought Rafa 4 years without winning shit. We can at least give the guy who brought us the first league title in almost 30 years two seasons

I wasn't advocating unrest against Klopp, I was pointing out the inevitable cycle of SCM attitude to manager's press conferences, from "this is a breath of fresh air" at the start of the reign to "he is an embarrassment and would be better off saying nothing" towards the end.

Very striking with Kenny as he treated all journalists with contempt, which everyone loved to begin with, but it turned into a stick to beat him with over time.

I've read some stinging criticism of Henderson on this goal, but on rewatch I'm not sure it's such a clear mistake – he gambled trying to prevent a one-two with Benzema, unfortunately at that point Gomez and Trent were too far away from Vinicius and too passive to challenge him. Just momentary miscommunication among our defenders and of course great execution on part of Vinicius.

On the other hand... If I'm Klopp re-watching this match, I'm absolutely sickened by this episode. Like, literally physically sick to look at Fabinho. Trent's throw-in is aimed precisely at him, Modric is 10 meters away in his full view, his teammates have no doubt that we're safely in possession and are already thinking how to position themselves for the next attack. All of that was predicated on our senior DM making the most basic of efforts to receive the ball, literally taking 2 small steps - instead he couldn't have made a more feeble attempt to stretch for the ball if he was bound to a wheelchair. After that he made no attempt to foul Modric and no attempt to track back and correct his mistake. (Also note that Modric probably saw something earlier in Fabinho’s play that made him make that gamble - he predicted the lazy stretch and was immediately rushing out not to press, but to steal the ball.)

Fabinho looked so good in the first half, did many things right. But this... is inexcusable for a professional footballer and a senior player. Not just the mistake itself, but the lack of reaction, lack of desire in a kind of game and game situation where this simply cannot be tolerated. Fabinho may have ended his Liverpool career with this play.
